Fires of the spent rods are the real deal for doom,

HOWEVER, even if the fire started, it would have to go on and on without being put out.

I heard that the fires with the spent fuel are out, that would cancel the Tokyo Doom.

The reactors are dramatically cooler now.

The radiation is out and now is the time to test and figure out what got out and what is to be done,

This showed one thing, which is worry some, There have been 2 nine quakes within 7 years, if this is a trend and a west coast quake happens, the real AMerican Doom would be fires in our spent fuel rods and our inability to put out the fires, it is cold and wet and near the sea for those reactors, American reactors are near rivers, areas are dry, the fire might not be put out.

Also those rods are there because in America nobody wants them in their back yard,

apparently these things burn if they're not immersed in coolant?

if that's the case putting out such a fire may not be easy

The US is doing exactly the same thing..all of the spent rods are kept on the grounds of the facility.
That's why for years, the Gov. has been trying to create some 'central location' to store the things.
They are running out of space on the reactor grounds.
What is happening in Japan, could easily happen here, or anywhere else across the world, as I think most places keep to the same gameplan...store them onsite.

What's more, as you said, you cannot 'put those fires out'. There is no substance known to man that can extinguish burning fuel rods. Put simply, our world just became toast.
