STUPID QUESTION HERE
When we dropped the bombs on Japan, where did the fallout go? Did any come to the West Coast of the US?

Did everyone panick and go out and buy full protective gear and all in fear of the fallout?

Re: STUPID QUESTION HERE
Not necessarily, obviously. As nuclear explosions go, the blasts at Hiroshima and Nagasaki were pretty clean. In fact, in the weeks following the bombings, American authorities trying to keep a lid on the deteriorating PR situation portrayed A-bomb damage as being just like that from conventional weapons, except that there was more of it. Those already dying of "atomic sickness" knew better. Only gradually did the world realize that, even if you can safely walk through the ruins of a bombed city soon afterward, the effects of a nuclear attack continue to show up for years.

Atom bombs like the ones dropped on Japan produce two types of radiation: initial and residual. (I'm getting this from Hiroshima and Nagasaki: The Physical, Medical and Social Effects of the Atomic Bombings, an exhaustive Japanese study, published in English in 1981.) Initial radiation is released by the explosion itself. Residual radiation comes later from radionuclides, radioactive isotopes either generated by the explosion or else induced in soil, building materials, bodies, etc, by neutron bombardment unleashed by the blast.

The bombs that destroyed Hiroshima and Nagasaki produced their share of residual radiation, but it didn't stick around long, for two reasons. First, both bombs were detonated more than 500 meters above street level so as to wreak maximum destruction (surrounding buildings would have blocked much of the force of ground-level explosions). That limited surface contamination, since most of the radioactive debris was carried off in the mushroom cloud instead of being embedded in the earth. There was plenty of lethal fallout in the form of "ashes of death" and "black rain," but it was spread over a fairly wide area.

Dear OP,

No, it's a very GOOD question. I went onto the internet and tried to find your answer, with concrete evidence, but couldn't find what I was looking for. Maybe I didn't spend enough time looking...

I DO know that there WERE some survivors when those two bombs were dropped, even right near ground-zero.

Personally, and this is just my personal opinion, is that I don't think a whole lot, if any nuclear fallout will get to the West Coast of the USA. By the time the fallout gets into the upper atmosphere and the jet stream, it may have been sufficiently dispersed, rained-out, dropped out of the sky, etc.

If any does get to the USA, I would think it would be very minimal. Not everyone owns a Geiger Counter, but the next-best-thing to have is a 'Spider Plant'--you know, the cheap plant you can buy from Walmart, Lowe's, etc? Spider plants are green and white, in their leaves. Spider Plants are natural radiation detectors, because in the presence of radiation, the white parts in the leaves always turns PURPLE. Just thought I would offer that.

I know there's a big push for those Iodine tablets, etc., but one must be very careful, and probably shouldn't take them, without doctors advice, because it can really mess with the Thyroid Function. To safely pull radioactive isotopes out of the body, I know the Spirulina is good (I take Hawaiian Nutrex Brand), Chlorella, and even sea vegetables, like Kelp, etc. These three things really pulls bad stuff out of the body, and safely.

Just thought I'd offer my two-scents, for whatever it's worth.

Take care....
