The recent popularity of SUVs is one reason the U.S. population consumes more gasoline than in previous years. SUVs are as a class much less fuel efficient than comparable passenger vehicles. The main reason is that SUVs are classified by the U.S. government as light trucks, and thus are subject to the less strict light truck standard under the Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) regulations. As there is little incentive to change the design, SUVs have numerous fuel-inefficient features. The high profile of SUVs increases wind resistance. The heavy suspension and large engines increases vehicle weight. SUVs also often come with tires designed for off-road traction rather than low rolling resistance. The more car-like SUVs tend to have a somewhat lower profile and better road performance tires, but often still have large, fuel-inefficient engines.

Gawd, I can´t believe a gallon of regular gas is like $2.60, I noticed it on the way into work.

I really hope that this oil price increase will drive the world away from a petroleum based economy and move us up to an alternative based fuel...I mean hello, wtf is wrong with clean burning hydrogen?

This could be a blessing in disguise if acted upon in a timley fashion. We have to ask ourselves as a world at what point does hydrogen and other alternative sources make sense.

From an environmental perspective, it always has!
Mans use of petroleum has been penny wise, pound foolish and has most likely contributed to global warming, asthma rates and a host of other environmental and health problems.

Wow your gas is more expensive than ours! Makes me feel like I shouldnt be too upset, but it´s a hard adjustment to make when you feel like you have to take out a loan to fill your gas tank!

It would actually be very good for most people to leave their cars at home and walk or take the bike instead.

My wife and I have a mid-sized SUV and a MINI Cooper... but I am considering adding a small (~500cc) motorcycle to the collection for commuting to work. We both work (in opposite direction) so both cars are driven daily. The SUV milage is not really that ugly... around 20 mpg overall. The MINI gets around 26 overall. But, kids and two large dogs cannot all fit in the MINI at the same time.

I have not whined about the gas prices... don´t expect to ever see under 2.00 a gallon again.

just out of curiosity ... why is it that SUV divers get hammered alll the tme while mini-van drivers - who get about the same mileage - are never mentioned. is driving a mini-van punishment enough? or is it a "be kind to the soccer-mom" kind of thing? what is the deal?

So what is wrong with me.....
In 1997 I lived in CO and bought a 1997 Ford Explorer V-8 all wheel drive. Since moving there from CA it seemed logical given the icy road, unprodictable weather, mountain driving, etc. I wanted my wife and new baby to be safe as possible (ex. all wheel drive, larger vehicle, etc) Gas back then was well under $2 a gallon and it maybe cost me anywhere from $25-$30 fill it.

Jump ahead 8 years, still have it but I drive it to and from work (30 miles one way) but I recently bought my wife (and now 3 kids)a minivan that gets HUGE gas mileage, but the Explorer is paid for and since she´s a stay at home mom I can´t really afford another car payment for a "commuter" car. I figure what it would cost me to finance something more economical, would actually end up costing me more than what I´m spending in gas, also considering that the Explorer is almost 10 years old the insurance and registration is cheaper as well... Lastly, which also preceeds any other reason is I don´t want to be in debt, so I don´t want another car payment!

So that´s why I drive an SUV, that´s why I spend $50+ a week to fill it up. You won´t see me running around town in it, it´s simply a commuter car that is big (not the biggest) with a V-8. I´m living debt free and I choose not to take a loan simply so I can consume less fuel...

So what do you think of me?
