Gold will be worthless when it all hits the fan. Ammo, food, and water would be a better bet.

It will always be a good trade medium as well as silver b/c there is a limited supply. It packs easily and a small amount is worth alot so its a ripe form of currency as well. I would actually invest in silver first it will be even more commonly used for barter/trade if things get worse. And by invest i mean actually get your hands on it.
