Plasma is the fourth state of matter. It differs from solids, liquids and gases in so far as it's atoms are divided into free-floating 'negative' electrons and 'positive' ions (an atom which has lost its electron/s). It is sometimes referred to as an ionized gas. Students are generally taught about only three states of matter, and when Plasma does get a mention, little importance is assigned. Not only should plasma be added to the list, but the order should be reversed to put it in first place. The reasons for this will become clear. So, I'm going to post it again, with an explanation of this rare and incredible solar event. The Earth is magnetically connected with the source site behind the Sun. The Parker spiral has bended magnetic field lines that guide the electrically charged protons. [link to www.sidc.be] __________________________________________ So, this is what all that means, and I even put a pretty picture in the explanation so it is a little easier to visualize how a CME can erupt on the back-side of the sun, and still effect Earth. IMO, that is absolutely amazing! They are talking about the Parker Spiral. The spiral shape is similar to the pattern produced by a spinning lawn sprinkler, for similar reasons: the solar wind travels outward from the Sun at a uniform rate, but an individual jet of solar wind from a particular feature on the Sun's surface rotates with the solar rotation, making a spiral pattern in space. Unlike the jet from a sprinkler, the solar wind is tied to the magnetic field by MHD effects, so that magnetic field lines are tied to the material in the jet and take on an arithmetic spiral shape. Here's a picture of it... :parkerspiral: See how the magnetic field lines actually look like a 'spinning wave' being emitted from the sun. Well, to be technical, the shape is this: Unlike the familiar shape of the field from a bar magnet, the Sun's extended field is twisted into an arithmetic spiral by the magnetohydrodynamic influence of the solar wind. So, the CME exploded on the other side of the sun, and it gets caught up in the magnetic wave of the Parker Spiral, pulling the CME around the curve of the sun. You can imagine it with the picture above...the CME following the Parker Spiral around. Well, as it is doing it, it comes in contact with Earth's magnetic field, and pulls it in Earth's direction...
