"Living and Dying Downwind: Radiation, Japan and the Marshall Islands"

"When the dangerous dust and gases settle and we discover just how much radiation escaped the damaged Fukushima reactors and spent fuel rods, we may never know how many people are being exposed to radiation from the burning fuel rods and reactor cores, and how much exposure they will receive over time."

"Minute and above-background traces of Iodine-131 are already showing up in Tokyo's water supply - 150 miles southwest of the leaking reactors - and in milk and spinach [with a dash of Cesium-137] from 75 miles away.
The Japanese government has recently warned pregnant women and children to avoid drinking Tokyo tap water, and I-131 levels 1,200 times above background levels were recorded in seawater near the reactors"
.

"Aside from sharing the dubious distinction of both nations having been at the receiving end of America's nuclear weapons, Japan and the Marshall Islands now share another dubious distinction. The unleashed isotopes of concern from the damaged Japanese reactors - Iodine-131, Cesium-137, Strontium-90 and Plutonium-239 - are well known to the Marshall Islanders living downwind of the testing sites at Bikini and Enewetak atolls in the central Pacific, following sixty-seven A- and H-bombs exploded between 1946-58. In fact, it is precisely these isotopes that continue to haunt the 80,000 Marshallese fifty-three years after the last thermonuclear test in the megaton range shook their pristine coral atolls and contaminated their fragile marine ecosystems".

"Profiles of the four isotopes":

o "Iodine-131 [radioactive iodine] has a half life of eight days, and concentrates in the thyroid gland about 5,000 times more efficiently than other parts of the body. Traces of I-131 have been discovered in Tokyo drinking water and in seawater offshore from the reactors. It took nine years for the first thyroid tumor to appear among the exposed Marshallese and hypothyroidism and cancer continued to appear decades later."

o "Cesium-137 has a half life of thirty years and is a chemical analog of potassium; Cs-137 concentrates in muscle and other parts of the body. Rongelap Island has a new layer of topsoil containing potassium to help neutralize the Cs-137 left over from the H-bomb tests, but the Marshallese residents remain unconvinced and suspicious about the habitability of their long abandoned home atoll. Meanwhile, the U.S. is pressuring hard for their repatriation despite the fact that most islands at Rongelap will remain off limits for many decades with strict dietary restrictions of local foods."

o "Strontium-90 has a half life of twenty-eight years, is a chemical analog of calcium and is known as a "bone seeker." Rongelap and the other downwind atolls have residual Sr-90 in their soils, groundwater and marine ecosystems."

o "Plutonium-239 has a half life of 24,000 years, is considered one of the most toxic substances on Earth, and if absorbed is a potent alpha emitter that can induce cancer. This isotope too is found in the soils and groundwater of the downwind atolls from the Bikini and Enewetak H-bomb tests."

"Lessons from the Marshall Islands"

"* It took nine years after exposure to the 1954 Bravo fallout for the first thyroid tumor and hypothyroidism to occur in an exposed Utrik woman from the I-131. Several more tumors [and other radiogenic disorders] among the exposed people appeared the following year and every year thereafter. The latency period for thyroid abnormalities and other radiogenic disorders [see below] endures for several decades".

"* Because a child's thyroid gland is much smaller than an adult's thyroid, it receives a higher concentration of I-131 than an adult dose. Also, because a child's thyroid gland is growing more quickly than an adult's, it requires and absorbs more iodine [and I-131] than an adult thyroid gland. That is, the thyroid effect is age-related.* Radioactive Iodine-129 with a half-life of 15 million years and a well-documented capacity to bioaccumulate in the foodchain, will also remain as a persistent problem for the affected Japanese."

"* The Majuro-based Nuclear Claims Tribunal was established in 1988 to settle all past and future claims against the U.S. for health injury and property loss damages from the nuclear tests. As of 2006, the NCT had paid out $73 million [of the $91 million awarded] for 1,999 Marshallese claimants. There are thirty-six medical conditions that are presumed to be caused by the nuclear tests [ [link to www.nuclearclaimstribunal.com]."]

"Eligibility for Marshallese citizens consists of having been in the Marshall Islands during the testing period [1946-58] and having at least one of the presumptive medical disorders."

"Any amount of ionizing radiation - which is cumulative - can pose a health threat for certain individuals, and especially those with compromised immune systems."

(GLP cut and paste rules respected)

The bottom line is this:

They are reporting I131 in the ground water, in milk, in spinach. Don't kid yourself, the other stuff (Iodine 129, Cesium-137, Strontium-90 and Plutonium-239 are all there also.

Mushrooms from any possibly contaminated areas might be a good food to avoid for a very long while.

"Mushrooms That Absorb Radioactive Cesium 137 and Other Radionuclides"

"The lingering effects of the Chernobyl nuclear catastrophe in 1986 in Ukraine continue to affect entire eco-systems in Europe. An example of such effects is the radioactive contamination (cesium-137 contamination) of wild mushrooms in certain European countries["/b].

"With the recent developments at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant in Japan and the uncertainty of the consequences of the disaster, the topic of nuclear contamination of food has re-gained considerable public attention over the past weeks."

"Mushrooms' Affinity for Cesium-137 and Other Radionuclides"

"Fungi, which lack stems and roots, use absorption to obtain nutrition from the atmosphere through their surface cells. As a result, they are prone to absorbing radioactive substances such as cesium-137 (also known as caesium-137, radiocaesium-137 and 137 Cs) and other radionuclides. Cesium is one of the by-products of nuclear fission processes in nuclear reactors and nuclear weapons testing. The Chernobyl power plant released significant amounts of radiocesium-137 into the environment, but also the nuclear weapons tests in the 1950s and 1960s released some cesium."

[link to www.healwithfood.org]

The half-life of cesium-137 is 30 years and it is associated with an increased risk of cancer.

[link to www.epa.gov]
 Quoting: emerald eye

A really good PDF about the decontamination of wild mushrooms:

"Radioactive cesium can be removed by
soaking or boiling the mushrooms in water.
Most of the cesium is transferred into the
water, which is then disposed of. This
process can remove up to 70-90% of
cesium."

I didn't see anything published about radiation except for its anti-oxidant effects.

If you have another reference for it that shows a protective or healing effect from radiation, I would be happy to add it to the list.

 Quoting: t 1074669

Here is a reference that mentions Bromine relative to radiation as it may help overcome hypothyroidism and goiter from chronic overconsumption of iodine:

"Iodine toxicity and its amelioration."

Iodine (I) toxicity is rare in animals and humans, but nuclear explosions that give off radioactive I and excessive stable I ingestion in parts of the world where seaweed is consumed represent specialized I toxicity concerns. Chronic overconsumption of I reduces organic binding of I by the thyroid gland, which results in hypothyroidism and goiter. Bromine can replace I on position 5 of both T(3) and T(4) with no loss of thyroid hormone activity.

Avian work has also demonstrated that oral bromide salts can reverse the malaise and growth depressions caused by high doses of I (as KI) added as supplements to the diet.

Newborn infants by virtue of having immature thyroid glands are most susceptible to I toxicity, whether of stable or radioactive origin. For the latter, the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear accident in Belarus has provided evidence that KI blockage therapy for exposed individuals 18 years of age and younger is effective in minimizing the development of thyroid cancer. Whether bromide therapy has a place in I toxicity situations remains to be determined.

[link to www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

I did find a reference about Bromine causing problems in young rats, so this might not be a good idea for very young children. Bromine tends to replace chlorine in salts.

"Effects of a high bromide intake in lactating rats on the performance of the dams and on the prosperity of their young were studied. In the dams, two marked consequences undoubtedly caused by high bromide intake were observed:

"With the addition of 5 g bromide per liter (providing the mean daily bromide dose of 220 mg), bromide ions replaced about 54% of the chloride in the milk. A rise in the concentration of both halogens caused also an increase in the concentration of sodium in mother's milk. The exact mechanism(s) of bromide interference with postnatal developmental processes in the young remain(s) unclear."

Sometimes it is just as simple as supplying iodized salt. For more information:

“As the 20th anniversary of Chernobyl approaches, UNICEF says that the numbers of children who developed thyroid cancer could have been significantly lower if they had been consuming iodized salt in their daily diet at the time of the accident.”

“Calling for universal salt iodization, Maria Calivis, UNICEF Regional Director for Central and Eastern Europe and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CEE/CIS) noted: “For the 4,000 children in question, iodized salt could have made all the difference. Many would have been spared from thyroid cancer.

“Ten years after the Chernobyl nuclear plant catastrophe more than 500 children in Belarus are suffering from thyroid cancer. The major cause of the high incidence of thyroid cancer in children under 15 years of age appears to be contamination resulting from that catastrophe, mainly with isotopes of radioactive iodine. Another important factor may be iodine deficiency in the environment.”

“Since the air clouds from power plant Fukushima appeared over Poland, concentrations of artificial isotopes in the atmosphere were steadily growing (from one measurement to another increasing value was registered). Recent measurements (Friday - 01.04) shows that it was a breakthrough. That day we registered a lower concentration of radioactive iodine I-131 over Poland in relation to measurements made two days earlier. This may indicate that the air with the greatest amount of radioactive material left the territory of our country – it will be clear after the next air measurements by monitoring network. Currently, the concentration of iodine I-131 is still on the level of several milibecquerels per cubic meter of air. These are very low concentrations.”

SOLUTION to Japan Nuclear Radiation.---Ham --CB radio--Tesla Coils--CREATE a SHIELD for the Earth NOW!!!!!

To all everyone with a Ham Radio, CB radio or Tesla Coil...
and if you don't have one of these, get a piece of REBAR and put it in your yard...
this pass this information to everyone you know!!!!

MEDIA PEOPLE: Please post, annouce, distribute.

John Hutchison has been in the Gulf of Mexico using certain audio and radio frequencies to RESET the polluted waters.
THE SAME SCIENCE can be used to try to PROTECT the Earth from the radiation being released in Japan.
Hutchison is transmitting RIGHT NOW.
People need to pick up the signal and "bounce" it to attempt to create a SHIELD.

Here are John Hutchison's instructions:

HAM RADIO OPERATORS
TUNE INTO the
ULF bands at 16 kilohertz
VLF bands at 19 kilohertz to 400 kilohertz and then into the
HF bands at 4 megahertz starting at 2 mhz to 18 mhz then at up to 27 mhz
there will be lots of side carriers
You should here something SIMILAR to this (this is not the exact audio, but close)
[link to www.youtube.com]

The RF effects are also in the X band region
the regions of the solar flux index and
hydrogen bands
these are 21 to 24 centimeters
broad banded

CAPTURE THIS and use AM and USB and lower SB to
RETRANSMIT and set up a RELAY

The frequencies can also be received by
RF MODULATED LASERS and TESLA COILS
Tesla coils will do a lot on there own,
plug them in and they will recieve and tranmit

and if any folks have IMPULSE GENERATORS or RF GENERATORS
feed the signal into them and fire them off.

Ham Radio Operators
use phase shifting and other devices to get the frequencies out.

CB Radio Operators
If you can pick up the signal from John Hutchison, rebroadcast it. Do a CB SKIP.
We are working with sky waves, ground waves and interactions with a larger prime mover like the ionosphere, solar and geomagnetic fields and propagation. THIS IS SAFE!!!

EVERYONE ELSE
We used REBAR as antennas to capture the RF frequencies.
This worked in cleaning the ground around the rebar.
GET rebar and put in the ground.

Along with this use your mind for healing the earth and helping Japan.
This is called psychotronics.
All the above information and psychotronics are accepted sciences in the millitary industrial complex as well as noetic science teams.

Please participate.
Please help save the Earth.

With enough people capturing and relaying the frequencies, we may be able to create a SHIELD against the nuclear contamination.

LISTEN...LEARN
The radioactive particles are trying to "GET BACK" to their orignal state. They "decay" and blast off energy when they decay. When you get a particle in your body, it will BLAST and kill the surrounding cells. Any injured cells that survive then duplicate into CANCER.

THE FREQUENCIES we are using in the Gulf of Mexico VIBRATE the water (and pollutants)...back into their BASE ELEMENTS.

It is "accererated decay".

Will this work with the radio active particles?
I have NO IDEA.

But I am not willing to watch the entire world disintegrate as these radio active particles try to "get back" to their base elemental form.

We are working on TWO other additional methods of getting out the frequencies.

Will let you know when these methods are operating.

Japan hastily sets seafood radioactivity limit amid overseas concern”

Japan hastily set a legal limit Tuesday for the permitted level of radioactive iodine in seafood as safety concerns spread overseas in the wake of continuing leaks contaminated water into the Pacific Ocean from the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant. The limit of 2,000 bequerels per kilogram set by the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare for radioactive iodine in marine products such as fish and shellfish is the same as that already adopted for vegetables, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano told a press conference.”

"Concern is growing about seawater contamination and the safety of seafood as Tokyo Electric Power Co., the operator of the Fukushima power plant, has begun dumping water containing a relatively low level of radioactive materials into the sea as it struggles to contain highly contaminated water at the complex."

“Foreign Minister Takeaki Matsumoto said Japan has been making utmost efforts to minimize contamination in line with the U.N. Convention on the Law of the Sea, pledging to fully inform the international community of Tokyo's steps to tackle the ongoing nuclear crisis amid concern among neighboring countries about the spread of radiation.”

“In Seoul, a spokesman for the South Korean foreign and trade ministry said the country is concerned about the contamination of seawater and Japan should have notified it about the release of radioactive water in advance.”

“The imposition of the limit followed the detection by Japanese authorities 4,080 bequerels per kilogram of radioactive iodine in young sand lance caught Friday off Kitaibaraki in Ibaraki Prefecture, which prompted the health ministry to consider setting a limit for fish and clams.”

Re: **RADIATION PROTECTION**- non prescription list, revised and updated.
I wanted to put together a handy list of internet sites which claim to be monitoring radiation levels in the US. The following is what I came up with. Please feel free to post any additions. People cannot make informed decisions without accurate information.

I know that many of us do not really trust the government readings, but at least we can see some of the information to try and make our own informed choices. Also, we can monitor our own area without waiting to a news agency to pick up a high level of something. We can also specifically monitor our individual States for levels in air, precipitation, and milk.

This is an interactive map from the EPA showing the beta gross count rate which measures the radiation from all radionuclides that emit beta particles: [link to www.epa.gov]

So far the levels seem to be stable or dropping off a bit. but there seem to be some exceptions to that rule. For instance the beta gross count, seems to be a slight up tick in San Bernardino Cali.

Also Riverside Cali:

There are also things that I cannot explain, where things seem to be elevated BEFORE March 11, so these would not be the Japan quake.

For Example:
Pierre SD:

Rapid City SD:

[link to www.epa.gov]

This site also gives the EPA State by State analysis of air filters, precipitation, milk, and drinking water levels of: I 131, I 132, I 133 and Cesium 134, 136, 137, Cobalt 60 Te 129, 132 (scroll to the right)

[link to www.epa.gov]

Here is an interesting graph of the radioactive monitoring from the University of Washington Physics department:

It shows levels of cesium as well, which has a half life of around 30 years.

Here is from "Air Monitoring at UNLV" (University of Las Vegas)

Here is the EPA site (FWIW anyway)

Thanks, I thought that this latest post was handy information, so I started a seperate thread on it.

This however remains my main thread, and all of my significant updates will continue to be posted here.

I try to provide as much factual information as I can because that is what I search for, and what I think that others are really searching for as well (if any truly factual information exists that the public has access to). hugs

Hi Emerald eye,

tried to pm but i cant afford to upgrade at the moment. So i'll just have to put this right out there. in your original list you have miso, and this was one of the original two factors identified in survivors of the ww2 american bombings of hiroshima and nagasaki, along with iodine. i think you mention quite briefly that it was said by a japanese uni to x5 the chance of surviving radiation exposure. now, i believe that the most important component of miso is in fact niacin, b3, and furthermore the type that causes a flush. because the iodine isotope is only a minor long term risk in land contamination as well as food contamination i believe that much more emphasis should be put on the supplementation with niacin.

also, there has been a backlash with people saying that taking excessive, or even therapeutic doses, of iodine may tip the balance of risk/benefit ratio against their favor. together with timing issues, and time limits, where wolf-chaikoff may occur, opponents can use the above issues.

but i believe this is not the case with niacin. in other words even if people _are_ in fact taking it for a risk to which they are not being exposed, it is still going to benefit them significantly, and it is also probably the single most economic beneficial nutrient.

now, there are some details about niacin which i would love to discuss. i'm going to go to a friends with adsl2 and take a webcam so if you want i would be happy to discuss it with you. discussion through the forum is also great. i just thought that seeing as you already have a reputation and have probably been the most successful person on glp in spreading the message about using therapeutic levels of nutrients to protect against radiation as well as provide wider health benefits, that i would direct this concern towards you. i dont know if youve ever taken ~1gram of niacin, with or without the other things in a regime developed by dr's and naturopaths (including my mother)? but the regime is basically;

dont drink alcohol the same day; take ~1gram niacin in a large glass of water (have seen drs recommending upto 6gram a day in divided doses for reversing atherosclerosis ); together with, a capsule of liquid lethicin (the straight liquid is a mess and sticks to your teeth, and the liquid is in considerable experience more efficacious than granules), a b complex to assist the process and prevent b imbalance, vitE (i'll get you the suggested amount), also possibly coQ10 (although this is generally one of the more expensive nutrients and it may be more efficient to dose separately due to the low bioavailablity through the digestive tract). hot showers can help with the flushing, as can spraying the body with a substance called Schweitzer which i dont have much experience with personally.

this regime massively increases circulation and health of the skin and organs, immune system, and healing. also niacin is implicated as a precursor or cofactor in dna repair mechanisms, and i believe this may be the connection to the radiation protection. oh vitD is probably a good thing to take too, and possibly together, and there is growing evidence that vitD can protect against cancer by acting as a hormone that regulates excessive cell proliferation.

well, i'll end this before i go tl;dr, but i hope you do find that niacin is worth recommending and may infact, according to your own brief recommendation of miso and that of many others, be the most significant factor in radiation protection. finally the shot that you are given just before a ct to protect you (i had one last year) i believe consists of niacin and iodine!

thanks for your time, propagandhi

You are so right, and I probably didn't spend enough space on Niacin in the original post.

"Niacin refers to two chemically distinct compounds: Nicotinic acid and Niacinamide (nicotinamide).
These biologically active components are derived from dietary niacin or are biosynthesized from available tryptophan."

"Niacin plays a major role in the formation of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD) and its phosphate (NADP), compounds important in intermediary metabolism and a wide variety of oxidation-reduction reactions."

[link to www.surgical-pathology.com]

One of the possible difficulties with Niacin is that it can increase the radiosenstivity of the thyroid gland to radioactive I 131.

"Nicotinamide (niacin) is very useful substance in treatment of many kinds of diseases. For the decades the main indications for application of niacin were lipid disorders. There are studies confirming that niacin increases thyroid radiosensitivity to 1-131."

[link to www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

"Nicotinamide increases thyroid radiosensitivity by stimulating nitric oxide synthase expression and the generation of organic peroxides.
NA (Nicotinamide) potentiates the effect of 131 I by increasing eNOS, which would in turn stimulate NO production, increasing thyroid blood flow and tissue damage via organic peroxides."

[link to www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

On the other had, niacin seems to protect from chromosomal breakage due to ionizing radiation.

"Our data suggest that a high intake of niacin from food or a diet high in whole grains but low in red and processed meat may protect against cumulative DNA damage in IR-exposed persons."

[link to www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

So the niacin situation seems a bit complicated to me right now just as the iodine situation is.

It may be a dose dependant response (maybe miso soup has just the right amount) broccoli

People make sometimes the incorrect assumption that if a little is good, a lot should be better, and it doesn't always work out that way. lala

I will try to spend a bit more time on this and respond more completely tomorrow to your thought provoking post. My eyelids are getting very heavy at the moment.

I promise to respond more completely to you tomorrow, but thanks for your thoughts on this.smile_kiss
