Last week, Arnie Gundersen, a nuclear engineer who studied Chernobyl and was an expert witness on Three Mile Island, described what would happen if there was a melt-down

He calls Fukushima "Chernobyl on Steroids"

He didn't think the crisis could be averted...we'll soon find out if that's the case, probably pretty soon.

IEER: Japan Radioactive Iodine Releases May Exceed Three Mile Island by 100,000 Times

Author: Arjun Makhijani, Institute for Energy and Environmental Research
Published on Mar 26, 2011 - 10:21:18 AM

TAKOMA PARK, Maryland, March 25, 2011 - The damaged Fukushima Daiichi reactors in Japan continue to release radioactivity into the atmosphere....While Chernobyl had one source of radioactivity, its reactor, there are seven leaking radiation sources at the Japanese site. Together, the three damaged reactors and four spent fuel pools at Fukushima Daiichi contain far more long-lived radioactivity, notably cesium-137, than the Chernobyl reactor.

"This accident has long since passed the level of Three Mile Island," said Dr. Arjun Makhijani, president of the Institute for Energy and Environmental Research (IEER).

"While the releases are still considerably below Chernobyl, they have already reached a level that could affect the region around the site for a prolonged period...

The primary risk of concern with iodine-131...Cesium-137 contamination is the main reason that a huge exclusion zone (about 1,000 square miles) still needs to be maintained around Chernobyl.

I hope not all of Japan...it is a beautiful country, and a wonderful society

However, because of denial, coverups and greed (the Tepco executives didn't move swiftly because they were trying to salvage their investment in Fukushima Daiichi first) the Japanese may lose a significant region bordering the n-plant.

As a result of Cesium-137 contamination there is a 1000 square mile "exclusion zone" around Chernobyl to this day.

If even half of that mileage were to be "excluded" today within 500 miles of Fukushima that would easily include Tokyo

The Japanese officials don't have the resources to deal with the Tsunami refugees they already have, so they certainly don't have the resources to handle evacuees from Fukushima and Ibaraki prefectures

I think they haven't even considered an evacuation of Tokyo, because there is no way to do it. It is the ultimate end-game scenario.

The fate of a nation is hanging on those 200 firefighters on the suicide mission of cooling reactors which may already be in advanced stages of meltdown.

Meanwhile...the band plays on.

why would they impose a mandatory evacuation when they didn't do so with the gulf coast incident?

It could be...and they're not even trying to hide it...

You could also say they may also be totally overwhelmed. Japan has a Debt to GDP level of 200%, and the Tsunami/earthquake is already the most expensive disaster in history, over $300BN and rising. If they have to evacuate that many people - possibly permanently - that would add another level of strain to an already overspent government. Japan doesn't have much unused land...maybe it really is time to ask China to move into those 64MM empty apartments, as someone on GLP suggested.

Japan government 'overwhelmed'

[link to www.news24.com]

Yamagata - A top Japanese official acknowledged on Friday that the government was overwhelmed by the scale of last week's twin natural disasters, slowing its response to the nuclear crisis that was triggered by the earthquake and tsunami that left at least 10 000 people dead.

The admission by Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano came as Japan reached out on Friday to the US for help in stabilising its overheated, radiation-leaking nuclear complex, and as the country reclassified the rating of the nuclear accident from Level 4 to Level 5 on a seven-level international scale. Nuclear experts have been saying for days that Japan was underplaying the crisis' severity.

Experts compare Fukushima and Chernobyl disasters

2:44 26/03/2011

Japan lost much time in dealing with the consequences of an accident at its quake-hit Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant, Russian experts said.

"Intensive activity started in Chernobyl on the first day [since the accident], but in Japan, it's very slow. In my opinion, they lost much time and still can't control what is happening," Col. Gen. Nikolai Antoshkin, one of the Chernobyl liquidators, told RIA Novosti on Friday.

Expert: ‘Breach of containment’ scariest words for scientists

By Valerie Hurst KATU News and KATU.com Staff

PORTLAND, Ore. – A physicist who’s been on national news talking about the Japanese nuclear crisis said Friday the word “breach” is one of the most frightening words known to nuclear engineers.

...“This is huge. For the first time, they’re using that dreaded word, ‘breach,’ Kaku said during an interview at KATU’s studios. “Plutonium is the most toxic chemical known to science. A speck of plutonium, a millionth of a gram, could cause cancer.”

His own family and friends in Japan have evacuated to the United States...

...Still, Kaku said he worries the recent reported breach could force workers to evacuate. If that happens firefighters would stop spraying water on the core reactor. He said the meltdown that would follow would likely reach the West Coast.

“Once they evacuate, then we pass the point of no return and meltdowns are inevitable at three reactor sites leading to a tragedy far beyond that of Chernobyl, creating permanent dead zones in Japan,” he said.

Until that point plant workers continue to expose themselves to a year’s worth of radiation every 30 minutes. Kaku calls those brave souls, samurais.

Is it just me or do we make too much of evacuating.

Are evacs really that scary??

Organize and deliver. What's the big deal? Round 'em up, move 'em out, seek donations to feed, clothe, and keep 'em clean until they can relocate.

The global populace has already proven they are willing to help but charities have been corrupted. Cut the middle man. If you want to donate be willing to take in a family or adopt a family and assist them with getting on their feet. If the entire planet agreed to this it could work.

Put it this way... If Japan agreed to assist with the cost of relocating say, a family of four, I would be able to take them in. Any locals in my area who wanted to donate could purchase food or clothing then deduct those purchases from their taxes. Local businesses could provide jobs. Check, one family done.

Each family is relocated to the area whose language they know. Attempts can be made to keep extended families together but no guarantees. Skillsets could be factored in.

It seems if politicans aren't benefitted by something they just won't do it. A little too much effort and thinking is needed for them to do their jobs and lead people.

If the northern half of Japan is uninhabitable, what else is there to do?

As I'm typing this it's becoming clear. Who will pay for cancer treatments as they become ill? Who will watch over the families to ensure they are not 'enslaved' by their host families?

Egads... it is scary. What a mess.

Japan Soil Measurements Surprisingly High

by Jocelyn Kaiser on 25 March 2011, 6:14 PM

Meanwhile, on Wednesday the Japanese science ministry began to report measurements of cesium-137 in upland soil around the plant. The levels are highest from two points northeast of the plant, ranging from 8690 becquerels/kilogram to a high of 163,000 Bq/kg measured on 20 March from a point in Iitate about 40 kilometers northwest of the Fukushima plant

...Assuming the radiation is no more than 2 centimeters deep, Chen calculates that 163,000 Bq/kg is roughly equivalent to 8 million Bq/m2

The highest cesium-137 levels in some villages near Chernobyl were 5 million Bq/m2.

...The soil measurements are more significant for evacuation purposes than radioactivity in the air, says nuclear engineer Shih-Yew Chen of Argonne National Laboratory in Illinois, because cesium dust stays underfoot while air is transient.

Levels of cesium-137 are also more important than soil readings of iodine-131, which is short-lived and more of a concern in milk and vegetables. "It's the cesium that would prompt an evacuation," says Chen.

..First dubbed the “Fukushima 50,” their number has now risen to more than 700 workers toiling inside an evacuation zone at the facility on Japan’s northeast coast that was battered on March 11 by an earthquake and then a tsunami.

....The wife of one told the daily Yomiuri Shimbun that she had not seen her husband since the day of the quake and tsunami, and had only spoken with him briefly several times.

“It’s like a war here,” she quoted him as saying.

Asked if he had been exposed to radiation, he told her: “A little.”

True...it's just that Chernobyl currently stands as the extreme end of what a catastrophic nuclear plant failure looks like, so it serves as the comparison, barring anything more appropriate.

Plutonium is exactly why this could be worse, which is what these nuclear engineers and experts have been saying...even though everyone has been trying to play it down. Never mind that there are 4 dangerous reactors vs 1 at Chernobyl.

I was truly impressed by the Russian physicist who spoke in the CSpan video. I think he is someone who knows what he's talking about, even though he isn't saying what people would prefer to hear.

Japanese Plant's Plutonium Containment Vessel May Have Ruptured

March 25, 2011

The operator of Japan's stricken Fukushima nuclear power plant has admitted there may be damage to the protective containment vessel around the most dangerous fuel rods in the complex -- the plutonium fuel rods in reactor No. 3.

The admission comes after Japan's government announced that workers who suffered burns while trying to cool the crippled No. 3 reactor were exposed to radiation levels 10,000 times higher than expected...

..."Currently, there is a high possibility that the third reactor's fuel rods are damaged and that is where we think [the radioactive water] came from," he said.

I don't think you "get it." Imagine moving one million people. How do you transport them? Where do you move them to? Where do they live once you move them? How do you feed them? How do you deal with sewage produced by them?

Now multiply the above scenario by 100. That is the population of Japan. It's half the number of people living in the US.

This is why people in metropolitan areas are no longer evacuated from disasters. It simply creates a bigger disaster over a greater area.

What you need to learn from this is that the government will not tell you when to leave. You must get out long before it becomes a noticeable problem for other people.
