How long or how many times can you filter radiated water through the same bucket of earth before the dirt is too toxic & needs to be discarded?

Can you use the same bucket more than once? How many gallons total?

Reverse osmosis filters out radioactive particles.

I have a fairly deep well at 125 feet. I'm thinking that it is probably safer than most any other source.

It depends on the level of radiation , but it is covered in detail on the posted site .. it covers allot of territory .. sort of half way from frontier life meets Oak Ridge .. its made for situation like Japan Is facing , and one day we might too...

The time it takes to read it, is nothing compared to how many people you , as an individual, could save if you can retain the information covered .. its not a formula for success , but more of a force multiplier for survival in situation where you don't see it coming..

In the illustrated Example you have a cloth layer and that delineates the removable layer, retaining the radioactive fallout , that you replace like any filter .. after a set volume of use..

IS it of such a design that you can create a blocked off cold air sump in the entrance way? RADIOACTIVE GAS MAY SETTLE , I DON'T KNOW, DON'T SLEEP ON THE FLOOR UNTIL SURE!

You must generate a survey of your cave co occupants and offer those most vulnerable the greatest protection ..

First everyone use use a mask for the time being,it is an immediate and expedient measure.

Try to plot where the radiation is tracking, to to decide which types of radiation will pose the greatest threat.

You will need a scrub trough or tub to decontaminate your outer gear and even then, you have to decide if you are going to have inside sanitation, or go outside..

Does the cave have water?

You have two problems there .. some of the Radioactivity is in the form of Xenon 133 [ a noble gas] and some of it is sublimated [ vaporized ] Iodine 131.. both of which are difficult to filter ..

Is it possible to make a Hard Outer Entrance with a door ?

Inside baffles could be a simple as an A frame of poles with a shower rod and curtain [ maybe sand along the bottom to help seal it ..

To do it quickly, create a dead space with plastic and sheets .. and filter the air intake with charcoal .. through a series of cans [#10], if you have power to draw it through , are you building the filter from scratch?

How you go about it depends on allot of things .. Since it is a cave .. you need to calculate the volume in cubic feet and then begin to do the oxygen consumption calculation to determine the amount of ventilation you will need.. usually it is listed at 1.5 CFM [Cubic Feet per minute] of atmosphere for an adult human with initial oxygen content starting at 21 percent.

THIS WILL ALLOW YOU TO SEAL IT COMPLETELY FOR A TIME IF THE WIND SHIFTS AND YOU GET A SPIKE

Though If this is an Actual Emergency of survival for you , I would develop a decontamination and ventilation strategy concurrently ,

Create layers of baffles , each with more distance from the entrance and leave your protective gear in the outermost layer of the entrance..

A set of baffles to still the air and a positive pressure system with charcoal filters if you have power.. ..

For a short time a series of sheets would block most of the fall out from getting into the cave .. [create dead space ] but there are allot of variables.

To reiterate:

Additionally, animals drink rainwater which will be unfiltered. Plants soak up rainwater which will be unfiltered. SO... maybe we could potentially get clean drinking water but the environment outside and our entire food supply would be CONTAMINATED!

-Making a covered place to raise worms and insects
to feed to the cave chickens
-Making a covered catfish pond [ a med-evil Fish Stew]
.. etc .. Dig it ..

The REAL f:ing problem is the dispersed Plutonium, one particle can kill you!

States that still have snow on the ground could be a resource. That ground is still frozen solid so you can be sure no rain has filtered down into it. The snow and ice are still creating a protective barrier. Remove a large area of snow and dig up some of the frozen earth (very difficult, but possible). Then cover the ground there with something so it cannot be rained or snowed on further.
