( link to pix below , bottom ) .

be aware that if you are upgrading to Windows 7, you might find yourself as soon as next year again in the situation to upgrade to the then-new "Windows 8" once more..

Customers are a constant cash-cow for Microsoft - you should notice that as soon as possible. ( New Win = new Office = new Servers .. new apps = need to buy all the basics over and over again.. that is the game )

So, however Win8 ( yes they now are using only these Numbers.. ) first screenshots are around, they are genuine, leaked by russian OEM that has access to the isos from Microsofts Beta site. The already "METRO" ( new theme name, similar theme like in Windows Phone OS ) branded installation screen shows that Microsoft is doing fast forward development and the Beta/RC phase will be not very far away.
Major Antivirus companies have been delivered with builds to test their AV-apps compatibilty with Win8, indicating that "the mjor OS" is halfway ready already-- otherwise testing kernel-drivers would be irrelevant. If you want : the "underpinnings" are done, now is the UI stuff and the apps.

This indicates a 2012 release seeing more and more screens leaking ( expect isos, product keys also to pop up here and there on the net - it has always been the case in early Windows development ).

What it will be : Well, natural WIndows7 of course. Tighter integration of Windows Live/Skydrive ( "cloud" ) services. Rumor has it that such authentication is needed to operate it, e.g. it is the first Windows that will only function with constantly internet connection, at least all your data will be in the cloud if this goes for real.

Better tablet support, builds for the ARM cpu to port it over to smartphones and thin-clients alike.

Dude, Since Vista it is all minor updates and tuning.. Ms is doing no new "Major Revisions" anymore. It is all NT 6 - just like 2000,XP,Server03,Media Edition etc were all the NT5 family, having Win2000 as the first ( NT5.0 and XP= NT5.1)

Vista = NT6.0 ( .zero release = NEW, totally different from 5.x family, new driver archticture, new development files )

Win7 =NT6.1 ( point relase, minor update, overhauled UI and bugfix for .0 )

Win8 = NT6.2 ( enhancement for the .1 release, newer UI )

Basically MS wants the Userbase all having one of these 3 installed by next year. Which one does not matter, although running the very first ( Vista ) would be a dumb decision cause of all the unsolved issues there are in. But as Win7 is nothing drastically different and has the same driver architecture it is totally ok, They are Brothers and Win8 will be their brethren also. NT6.x is the family name, so they will all be more or less compatible to each other, having one platform as the fundament.

By the release of Windows8 XP will be out of question = obsolete, and that is the ultimate goal.

why would anybody upgrade windows? use the version that came with your computer!! when they start selling computers with windows8, that's when you get that version, when you replace your computer.

Windows 7 to 8 upgrade will be free for all Windows 7 Genuine Customers if that happens. It won't. You are giving far far too much credit to Microsoft to do what Apple does.

my 2009 Laptop came with Vista plus Bloatware from Toshiba and Norton plus uncounted trials for Office, preinstalled skype, ebay apps and what not else.

It took ages to boot and was slow as hell. And I talk 4GB Ram with a Core2Duo Cpu and a 1GB graphics card that can do 3D games and aero in a breeze. Every OS should run like hot butter onto this setup.

Well.. according to your advice I should really run this day by day ?? No Way.

Toshiba offered a Win7 Upgrade Disc for 30 Euro, so..

in the meantime I played with Ubuntu 10.x and it was the fastest of all ( detected everything hardware related, no singel driver needed, sleep-standby-resume also works)Very nice, but unluckily it wont run PoserPro,DAZ Studio or Photoshop Elements. Also my games refuse to work in "wine".

So I am running Win7- its faster and snappier over Vista, has 2-3 features more but it is still Vista at the heart and not as fast as I wanted it to be..

That will be the straw that breaks the camels back for me....and MANY others.

Microsoft Windows 8! Coming soon with new and improved NSA backdoors free of charge.
check in you're country for severity of censorship and not bowing to the lords

You use windows, you deserve having them lord over you.
You use windows, you deserve to get viri
You use windows, you deserve to get patches to repair patches, that repaired previous patches.

I have a spare laptop, windows xp on it, picked it for for a spare because I need to clean my wife's, she won't let me have her Linux Laptop (notice caps?) long enough to do it.
She won't touch windows. :p she actually sneered when I told her to use it for a day or two. banana2

My life has never been better, don't get the weekly crashes from her "adjustments" and the virus's.

I download Windows 7, run it on my laptop for a month.
It's OK, but I wasn't overly impressed.

I have XP Essentials on my son's computer for a year now,
no problems at all, very stable.

Me, I dumped Windows all together two months ago and went with Linux Mint 10 on my laptop.

Runs flawless, didn't have to install not one driver.
