Long story short from what i remember, the cube symbolizes earth our prison.

The exit on top had sungate symbolism and it was also a trap.
The 2nd secret/hidden exit was shown in the 3rd cube movie which was also the safe way out. It was shown to be underwater and reminded me similar secret entrance and exit that was shown in star trek beyond.
