In demon's souls when you go to kill astraea the developers make it look like you're the bad guy but if you pay attention she's like the reptilian queen from V tv series keeping everyone trapped in bliss/dreamworld until you kill her and then everyone is free and back to themselves which in this case these peasants were murderers and try to kill you after you free them from the bliss.

I hope this is not the case for the masses as there's intel that this planet is an ancient prison.

Imagine blowing up the moon, waking up everybody, everybody gets their memory back and you find out we were all ancient evil beings that just got free to wreak havoc upon the cosmos.

It can be also an automated setup or failsafe the lunar scum have on us or anyone who manages to go free and like in the matrix carry agent smith/gene of the beast with him to the outside world.
