I see now he probably did something stupid, the disease that was already inside woke up/broke free from quarantine and started multiply, then through sex can attack the partner and wake up/break free the disease that sleeps/is quarantined inside the partner, find fertile ground to reproduce thanks to the nasty genes and so on.
