Anonymous Coward (OP) User ID: 1290067 ![]() 04/09/2011 06:18 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | stop wasting your money on that shit Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1322804I know.. I agree with you. I never buy them and I'm constantly ragging on my husband to stop wasting money on them. But what I am pointing out here is a serious flaw in the system. If the computer generated cards can produce one screw-up, they can potentially produce thousands of faulty tickets. This is a real issue within the lotto system that needs to be acknowledged and addressed. |

Totally! :) Either that or someone in the machine programing department totally screwed up. Which could lead to loss of faith in the integrity of the lotto system and all those big wigs at the helm could lose all those millions that they love to pocket rather than put toward education like they are supposed to. |
Anonymous Coward (OP) User ID: 1290067 ![]() 04/09/2011 06:36 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | why would they fix a problem that only benefits you? Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1322804The state lottery operates on the premise that it is a legitimate and trustworthy institution. If people think that they are not going to get their payout on a winning ticket, then they will not play. If everyone suddenly stops buying tickets, the lotto system will crash and it will take the education funds with it. If you ask me, the whole thing is a giant scam anyway and it saddens me how many people will spend money on a "chance" to win money. But the fact remains that the state lottery operates under strict guidelines and laws. If it is producing faulty tickets, it should be held accountable. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 1334624 ![]() 04/09/2011 06:41 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | So... the day before yesterday my husband went to our local corner store/gas station and bought a couple of scratch-off lottery tickets. One of those was a $3 "Match & Win" ticket. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1290067See here for an image of this type of ticket and the rules. [link to flalottery.com] "How To Play Match all "RED NUMBERS" in a row with YOUR RED NUMBERS and win that row's RED PRIZE. Match all "BLACK NUMBERS" in a row with YOUR BLACK NUMBERS and win that row's BLACK PRIZE. Match all 3 numbers in a column with YOUR RED or BLACK NUMBERS and win that column's prize." So he brings the scratch-off home and plays it. It's a winner! He got all the red numbers across the top row for a prize of $10. He also got all the red numbers across the second row for an additional prize of $10. He also got all 3 numbers in the last column (red) for an additional $30 prize. This is a payout total of $50.00 My husband did what everyone does when they get a winning ticket, he double and triple checked it. Then yesterday he took it to another store/gas station to redeem the $50. The cashier scanned the barcode and handed my husband $30. My husband objected and told the cashier that it was clearly a $50 winner and pointed it out on the ticket. The two of them poured over the ticket for several minutes and determined that it was in fact a $50 winner. No question about it. The ticket clearly states that you can win up to 14 times on one ticket so there is no chance that winning on a column can cancel out winning on a row. So, at this point it would seem that the issue is with the barcode being programed wrong or something. But... if you scratch off the entire playing field you will often find a three letter code that coincides with the dollar amount that that ticket is worth. On my husband's Match & Win ticket, there were three letters indicating a $30 payout. I think it was THY or THR or similar. For example, the previous night I won $10 on a ticket my husband bought, and scratching off the entire playing field revealed the letters T E N. Anyway... the cashier said he could only pay out the amount that comes up when he scans it and types in the control number on the bottom. It comes up as $30 so that's all he can payout despite the fact that the ticket is clearly a $50 winner. My husband asked for the ticket back so that he could take the issue up with the FL Lottery but the guy said he couldn't give him the ticket back, that his store requires them to hang onto all the winning tickets they pay out on. Since he had already scanned it and the drawer had opened, the transaction could not be canceled and the ticket would show up in the lottery system and paid. The cashier told my husband that he would talk with his manager about it and to come back tomorrow. What can we do without the ticket? What should we do when it comes to alerting the Lottery and/or the public about this type of error? Is this a one time glitch or could there be tons of these faulty tickets out there? Double check your tickets and the payout. All the cashier had to do was ring whoever operates your local system. If you ever saw how scratchcards are made you would wonder why mistakes are very very rare. |

Its what you have to do here in the UK, mostly due to non-activated packs or tickets already being scanned. It take about 5 minutes and they will send you a cheque for the amount once they recieve the ticket. |

Not sure if we have a similar system in place here but it's worth a try. Thanks |

Anonymous Coward (OP) User ID: 1290067 ![]() 04/09/2011 07:11 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Thanks for posting that illustrative video. It shows that the lotto system is producing a "product" (however arbitrary that product seems to some of us) and that they are held to certain standards of quality control. If my husband's bad ticket is the only one then it is a tiny error and paying my husband the remaining $20 would be the end of it. What isn't clear though is whether or not my husbands ticket was the only one. What if batch after batch was offset so that the barcodes and playing field did not match on all of them. This would indicate a serious issue with quality control. |
Anonymous Coward (OP) User ID: 1290067 ![]() 04/09/2011 07:14 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | If the store clearly knows that it was $50, why don't you ask the same cashier or manager to do you a favor and photocopy the ticket, thereby you have a copy to take it up with the FL lottery and the shop get to keep hold of the ticket. Quoting: GStar31There are some decent people around, I bet they won't mind doing that for you. He asked the clerk for a photo copy but apparently they don't have a machine there. It's one of those tiny pay-through-the-window stations. My husband is going to take our camera with him when he goes back there and will get some good digital snap shots. I hope this will be enough. |
