Ball lightning is a very rare phenomenon and these days when everyone has a digital camera and youtube at reach, there have not been that many reportings, until 2011, where they pop up everywhere.

My grandma saw a small ball of lightning back in '50-60, during a massive thunderstorm, which was "mating with the stovpipe oven", it scared the shit out of her.
They often occur close to transmission lines\transformers probably due to the massive inductive capacity of the lines.

There are also reportings of ball lightning phenomenons before we even invented power lines\transformers, and that rules out that they only occur around man made electrical differences in potentials, which only leaves thunderstorms and CME for the most logical explanation.


However, the ball lightning phenomenons we see today are rarely caused by thunderstorms, so rather CME's or some other "strange occurence" are the cause.
I will not mention what this "strange occurence" is, but I believe you all know what Im thinking of...
