PLEASE.... ![]() Email the company and ask them According to company literature, they should be replaced... but I don't have the money to do that right now. I know I can run my Berkey without the flouride filters, but I really like having them. I'm just wondering if anyone has left them in place after a year ????? ..."There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy."... Anonymous Coward User ID: 1292446 ![]() 04/09/2011 03:16 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | maybe if you hadn't fallen for the bullshit scam sales pitch for one of the worst filters on the Market and just bought a decent one you wouldn't be faced with this predicament. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1334785Well, isn't that just peachy!!! So all of us that bought a Berkey Light got scammed, did we? And what better filter do you have in mind? |
Dr. House User ID: 1281930 ![]() 04/09/2011 03:17 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | The black filter is an activated charcoal filter that not only 'strains' out particulate matter but also has chemical exchanges with the other chemicals in water (all water, except laboratory distilled water, has other chemicals in it). Activated charcoal can only be used 'once' meaning once it has been subjected to filtering X amount of water (depending on the rating of the filter) it is done and needs to be replaced. Attempting to back wash and 'reuse' such a filter will most likely be a negative thing, since it most likely will release the particulate matter it contains since the act of back washing will disturb everything including the charcoal, opening gaps to let stuff flow out the 'filtered' end. Anonymous Coward User ID: 1212638 ![]() 04/09/2011 03:22 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I had my first set of PS2 filters for 11 months, I just changed them. I believe they are good for 6,000 gallons - that's alot of water. It would depend on how much water you have already filtered. And lets be honest here, what's the worst that can happen if you leave them in a bit past their life span...they don't filter as well. I would replace them when you can, but would not sweat it if you leave them in an extra month or two. ![]() |

I was hoping that I could just leave them in until I can afford to replace them. That's what I'll do. ![]() I love the fact that I can just scrub the black filters and NOT replace them. ..."There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy."... Anonymous Coward User ID: 1326632 ![]() 04/09/2011 03:31 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | No you really cannot 'clean' a filter. What doc says is basically true. As far as cleaning the black filter elements, all you can do is to lightly scour the outside surfaces to removed mineral build up...I've done this on mine before. Of course, this does nothing internally to the filter, only the surface. These elements are normally good for thousands of gallons. Is your restriction in the black element or in the fluoride elements? |

I have the big berky with four filters and run my flouride filters for over a year with no problem. To the guy screaming scam, you should do a little research and sorry all you have is brita. |

Is your restriction in the black element or in the fluoride elements? It was the flouride filters that I was worried about, but I just got done cleaning my Berkey, scrubbing all filters (even the flouride filters) and putting the scrubbed filters back in. Filled it up and it's running just fine. It really wasn't that slow, but had some yucky white calcification on the filters, so I thought it was time. Thank you EVERYONE who gave me advice !!! Anonymous Coward User ID: 1292446 ![]() 04/09/2011 05:52 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | According to what I have read on several websites about the PF2 filters........ they are supposed to be replace every six months regardless because they constantly sit in the water they have filtered. Never the less you still use your own judgment and make your own decision. |
