The whole Earth is one giant blob of magma. Pockets at the surface are studied because they are the areas most likely to spew to the surface. If a global cataclysm split the crust in several places causing a chain reaction of splitting and exposing the mantle,, there is enough magma to bury all our land and turn all the water in the oceans into vapour.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1301284

but since the earth is hollow, and the crust is thin, the magma is passive, usually ..

First; yellowstone is not about to go, and this new info about the size makes no difference. It is a bit of interesting trivia though. If yellowstone goes, there is nothing that says it will be a "super volcano" eruption, it could be a smaller erupion from the yellowstone caldere.
Second; If Yellowstone erupts as a super volvano, where you live determines how long before you die. You will die from the ash and magma or from the "nuclear winter" that will cover the whole earth for 2 to 3 years. No sun means no food. No food means no people.
Third; Yellowstone has always been seismicly active. If you watch the sensors, you can see the magma moving, and you can see the harmonics from any large EQ anywhere on earth. If you are interested in such things, watch the yellowstone sensors regularly. It's kinda cool, but remember, it's been doing this for thousands of years. If you panic easily, just don't look. There are already enough people on GLP that don't understand yellowstone.
Hope for the best, but prepare for the worst.

Agreed. It could be a smaller eruption and like Kilauea in Hawaii just keep oozing and bubbling afterwards for a long period of time. Also, all 22 of the volcanos in Japan are now showing activity, Mt. Eta is at it again along with numerous volcanoes world-wide.

The earth continues to be bombarded by cosmic gamma rays as it nears the galactic center where the gamma rays are much denser and it is this that is heating up the entire solar system, including the sun and magma below earth's surface.

The CMEs and flares are likely caused by nearby astroids, comets and maybe even PX and its orbiting moons. Even if it were not PX, earth has entered into an oort cloud, spherical cloud of comets, that also create conditions for more solar activity given that the sun acts as an electrical compacitor where energy (flares) arcs between it and close-by space objects.

Yellowstone's been doing that for as long as I've been watching this situation. It certainly tells there is magma movement but I wouldn't be really alerted just yet. But then again, no-one knows the signs it'll show before a giant eruption...

If the super calder were to fully blow it means than almost everyone in North America is dead within mere minutes, or within the hour. None of the preps any there may have done would do them any good, they would not live long enough to even get to them. The northern hemisphere as a whole would be FUBAR'd in short order enough...

Next to a 1 mile wide or larger asteroid hitting this is eruption would be just about as doomy as it gets without the Sun going Nova or Alpha-Centuari going Super-Nova. Or if every nuclear weapon and nuclear reactor on Earth exploded at the same time.

Electric Yellowstone: Conductivity image hints volcano plume is bigger than thought

University of Utah geophysicists made the first large-scale picture of the electrical conductivity of the gigantic underground plume of hot and partly molten rock that feeds the Yellowstone supervolcano. The image suggests the plume is even bigger than it appears in earlier images made with earthquake waves.

"It's like comparing ultrasound and MRI in the human body; they are different imaging technologies," says geophysics Professor Michael Zhdanov, principal author of the new study and an expert on measuring magnetic and electrical fields on Earth's surface to find oil, gas, minerals and geologic structures underground.

Very nice find, OP.

I keep looking around for all the new findings of subterranean water in the rocks way down below 10 miles to 400 miles or even more below, like the big water plume that has been found beneath China. I keep wondering if they are every going to eventually discover a shell layer way down there of metallic water ice... its twice the density of normal water ice, and exists (when it does) at extremely high pressures and temperatures that could be found much deeper down in the crust or mantle, or perhaps down close to the Core.

Now just consider if there was a shell or layer of trapped water, in a full shell around the Earth down deep but above the mantle, and that this shell of water was around 20-30 miles thick, and super-heated under intense pressure, and some how, perhaps a magma plume eruption through it, the crust of the Earth started cracking down to the top of that super-heated water layer, just imagine that crack propagating tens of thousand of miles around the planet in a 42,000 mile long, 1 mile wide geyser of super-heated steam.. the fountains of the deep were broken up... those would be more than enough to cause a planet-wide flood of Biblical proportions, literally, the mechanical cause of the Flood of Noah, perhaps.

Now, with that massive stream water-shell source relatively depleted, now imagine the same sort of thing happens but with the magma, as you suggest, and you have the surface of the Earth overturning much like the astro-physicists think happened to the surface of Venus, now around 875F with plenty of sulfur in its soils and sulfuric acid in its atmosphere... it would be literally hell-fire and brimstone on Earth and the world as we know it, would most certainly come to an end, perishing by fire, it would be an EOTWAWKI event.

Yes, I see your point - that would be bad. Though, I believe there is not that much water to be found below the actual water tables. With the heat magma generates - and with the pressures, water would split to produce hydrogen and become very volatile if beneath the crust. There is a bit I expect, but the gases present are mainly releases from molten rock and minerals. When you see a glacier melt into an active/erupting volcano it really does cause it to go boom! hiding

two observation sites I check every time I wake up and go to sleep.
Its getting to the point where if there is a significant enough sized EQ near the region or just even on the west coast its going to make a dent on or near the YS part which could/can cause a reaction from the unstable caldera.
Its eventually going to happen, just don't know which generation will live through it.

here are those links:
Yellowstone Observation Center.

there are some other sites out there that hold programs

I will have to look some stuff up to get them on here for

This is very simple. A mega quake will compress the entire magma plum by say 50 to 100 feet all the cubicmiles compressed by 100 feet. And with very little rock capping the plume it will burst like popping a zit that will spew magma across 1/2 of America and turn the world into a scene from the road, except no one will survive to live as a cannibal

The real problem is nobody really knows, including the scientists, how a large super volcano acts before it erupts.

They only have normal volcano's for comparison, so the actions of this volcano before an eruption are all just speculation.
A vulcanologist would tell you that the only way to study a volcano would be for it to erupt, that is how they get their data.

The truth is, it may show no signs of eruption before it actually erupts.
