Re: Independent French radiation commission warns Europe that health risk from Fukushima fallout is “no longer negligible”
Geiger counters are used to detect ionizing radiation, usually beta particles and gamma rays, but certain models can detect alpha particles. An inert gas-filled tube (usually helium, neon or argon with halogens added) briefly conducts electricity when a particle or photon of radiation makes the gas conductive. The tube amplifies this conduction by a cascade effect and outputs a current pulse, which is then often displayed by a needle or lamp and/or audible clicks.
 Quoting: TKC

Here's an NYT article on the Japanese reactor elements:

ALPHA, BETA, GAMMA

Alpha particles are relatively large, but they cannot penetrate the skin, and a few sheets of paper will stop them, or even a few inches of air, so outside the body they are harmless. But if they get inside the body, from being swallowed or inhaled, they are extremely dangerous and can do extensive damage because they are relatively big and heavy, and can slam around inside cells like a bowling ball.

Beta particles are smaller than alpha particles. They do not pass through the body but can penetrate partway into the skin and cause burns. A piece of metal the thickness of a cookie sheet will stop beta particles. But if a beta-emitter gets inside the body, it can lodge in an organ and the particles can damage cells and organs from within.

Gamma rays are similar to X-rays, and can pass through the body and most materials. Gamma emitters can do harm whether they are inside or outside the body. It takes lead or several feet of concrete to stop them.

IODINE 131 and CESIUM 137

Most of the radioactive materials released from the Fukushima plant have been iodine 131 and cesium 137. Both substances emit beta particles and gamma rays. On the skin, they can cause burns, and their gamma emissions can also penetrate the body.

If a person ingests iodine 131 (milk from cows fed contaminated grass is the most common source), it is quickly taken up by the thyroid gland, particularly in children. The iodine then bombards the gland with radiation, and can cause thyroid cancer. If cesium is consumed — in contaminated produce or meat, for instance — it is distributed throughout the body, and acts as an internal radiation source. It can increase the risk of cancer.

PLUTONIUM

The Japanese authorities say they detected very small amounts of several forms of plutonium in soil near the plant, but they said it was unclear whether it came from the reactors or was a legacy of atmospheric atomic weapons testing. Plutonium emits alpha and gamma radiation, and can cause lung cancer if it is inhaled.

Don't want to violate the 50% rule on posting articles, so I'll paraphrase here to save you all the time of looking it up. This is in answer to question #3 above regarding the tolerable limits of radiation for the human body:

Basically, one dental xray = about .00005 rems
EPA states radiation sickness kicks in at 50 rems
EPA states death is possible at 400 rems
US Power plant worker limited to 5 rems per year
Fed Gov't guidelines for shelter/evacuation is 1 - 5 rems
The Asian "sievert" = 100 rems

I spoke with my brother in OK yesterday. I told him about radiation in PA water and radiation in Little Rock milk. I asked him what this tells him....His response...That its not here. I said yea your right it just skipped over Oklahoma on its way to PA and Little Rock. He said TV says all is fine, I told him to believe what he wants. He asked if I got my info from tv or internet. I said internet, then he said, Oh ok. He is a sheeple 100%. Geez he is sooooo stupid.

I spent last week in Vancouver taking a course. I mentioned Japan to my classmates and instructor, only to be met with "rolling eyes".
I live in the interior -about 7 hours in. All I could think all week is "Please let me get out of here before Japan sinks!"
Geographically I think the radiation is about the same- there is nowhere to run from that. Only going to get worse IMO. I ate as much sushimi as I could- may be for the last time!
 Quoting: DoomisTardy

Might be a good time for all of us to stock up on canned tuna and salmon. Suddenly the mercury in them doesn't seem so bad. Pacific isn't going to be producing much that is edible when this is said and done.

Also, I'd get and preserve as much food as you can. While it may be slightly radioactive now, I can bet we're going to look back at this time period as the good old days. Not going to get better for a long time, and almost certain to get worse.
 Quoting: irreverent

I grow a large garden and can everything. However I was counting on this harvest being possibly the last for a while due to 2012 potential DOOM. Now I must make due with a radioactive harvest - not much choice. I have 6 months of dried and canned food stored and my BOB by the door. There is an old mine around here to hide from a solar flare.
I always question this though. The meek will inherit the Earth right? As far as I know the meek don't have bunkers.

Meek as used in the quote you're referring to means "disciplined as in a trained horse not a humbled person that takes all sorts of B.S...just an fyiyoda

Re: Independent French radiation commission warns Europe that health risk from Fukushima fallout is “no longer negligible”
The rem is used to discuss biological absorption of the radiation. Since the rem is actually a large unit:

1000 millirem = 1 rem

source:
[link to www.jlab.org]

On converting cpm (the observed radiation) to rems (the absorbed radiation) I could only find this so far:

Considering a background given count rate of about 200 cpm, the expected surficial (1st centimeter) dose-equilavent rate at 1000 cpm is therefore approximated to be 6E-6 rem/h. Note that this is the estimated dose rate in the first centimeter and that the 1-cm "deep" dose rate would be lower by about 20 percent.

source:
[link to www.hps.org]

We need an expert to advise on this, because this text seems to suggest that when the background radiation detected from the geiger counter reaches 200 cpms, we would absorb MORE than the allowable limits for a year within one hour.

So far, in West L.A., the cpm's range from 48-68. Seems like getting out of town at about 100 cpms would be a good idea.

absolutely....

they are chemtrailing your skies on a daily basis....

wake up people....

you do not have govts.

well at least not in the way you think....

what you have is psychotic animals who control your water, food and air....

at least it takes radiation years before you begin to get sick.....unless you live real close to a nuke plant....

but with chemtrails....

you´ll get sick in two days....

and you will never suspect it....

cause you think your govt. (NWO animals) care about you....

well they do....

That is only the half life.
Generally double it and then add some.
How do you think Iodine-131 with a half life of only 8 days is being called a problem when it has taken about 10 days to reach us????

So 8x2+what ever = at least 16+ days of trouble...

Thank you.

I'm thinking if we halve the 200 cpms, then maybe we can also halve the absorbed figure from 6 rems to 3. So if it does get to 100cpms, we would be already at the EPA's evac/shelter guidelines, which are between 1-5 rems only.

If we can halve it again to 50 cpms' which we already are getting, then the absorbed rem's should be at 1.5, which is right now above the EPA evacuation guidelines.

Shit, if these figures are correct, West L.A. should already be evacuating! Can ANYONE refute this data please?

There is PLENTY of other nasty crap coming with it, but few will be honest.

Not only that, but the iodine is still of huge concern because of how fast it gets into the milk, etc.

The problem is that there wasn't one release of it, like an isolated explosion - there is a steady stream being aimed at us day after day. It's not like we can just avoid dairy for a month and never worry about it again. Most of the public seems to have a REALLY short attention span. That's a serious problem, because this stuff is cumulative in the human body. Young children are particularly at risk for thyroid cancers, etc.

EPA is beginning to see high iodine levels showing up in Hawaii's milk with levels of cesium-134 at 800% over the federal limit for drinking water (2 yr half-life) and 630% for cesium-137 (30 year half-life) in addition to iodine-131 at over 600%.

one of the main purpsoes of chemtrails is depopulation....

so with radiation in the air....

it´s all the better for the elite....

cause it just makes the depop. program that more feasible...

so if you think they are going to sound alarms and tell you to get out of dodge....

well then you are in for a big surprise....

cause that will never happen....

on the contrary the more radiation there is....

the more they will downplay it all....

after all they control the media....

and people worship t.v. like an idol....

it is their main source of information.....

and the first thing people say is this....

our govt. does not want to harm us....

cause if they did....the news reporter would tell us....

it´s that tragic!

I agree. You dont need bio suits to collect rain water if it is so safe. And if you need a bio suit in CA to collect the rain water, our kids certainly do not need to be out playing in it. To me this is criminal negligence to our citizens.

Because we all know that when they change the "safe" levels that automatically makes it all safe again now. Why can't people see how insane that is?
