English is a west Germanic language. Although the Romans occupied England for 400 years it appears that the successive waves of German and Scandinavian invaders swamped the original Celtic populations and Germanic dialects became dominant.

Even though English has many words of Latin origin (although nowhere near 50%) the Grammar and Syntax of the language is very different from the Romance languages.

English has the largest vocabulary, that's what I've heard, many more words than most other languages.

Also a friend of mine who did letterpress printing, and set lead type by hand, told me long ago that English was dominant because it only has 26 letters in the alphabet, and was easier to type and to print than any other language.

And maybe a certain amount of thanks should go to King Alfred of England regarding the English language.

celts didn't exist till 1500 BC and they came from germany. Julius caesar met Celts in SE Britain and they remembered coming from Germany. he also met the ancient race who had been around for 15000 years. these were the people who built stonehenge but we dont know much about them.

I am brazilian and though my english is very poor I can tell you that Portuguese must be much more difficult for a non speaker to learn than english. But there are many things that are clearer in Portuguese grammar I think; english prepositions for exemple are just crazy for me!

Actually, it's 58% considering French's Latin status.

Percent and status are also of Latin origin.
