I use the portable equivalent when wilderness camping (Katadyne "Camp Filter" with the optional ceramic filters) and it has always kept me healthy in the back country ... even when the water is really nasty and contaminated. The Berkey's are expensive, but are probably the best countertop gravity fed system out there. The absolute gold standard are the Reverse Osmosis filters ... but those need power of some sort (a LOT) in order to force the water through their filters, usually AC current though one can hook some models up to DC current (the cheapest models of reverse osmosis filters cost around $1500, and a basic countertop/sink model is closer to $2500) IMO you made a good purchase. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 869225A: You don't because you can't Useless gadget for radioactive water FWIW Wrong, you can clean the filters. You clean them the same way you would normally. All you need is to pick up a stray, bring him close to your place, promise him all the water he can carry by himself. All he has to do is clean the filters on the Berkey. Next........... |

Quoting: Lisa*LisaI paid $240.00 for it, I hope I didn't get railroaded and buy a piece of junk. I hope it's a worthwhile investment. Anyone here have one of these Berkey's? If so, how do you like it and do you have the black or the ceramic filters? Lisa, I don't know what kind you bought, but you can do a comparison here. I have the 'Berkey Light', with two filters, (included) and bought two other of the carbon filters to add on, to remove fluoride. I believe the first two regular filters are good for about 3000 gallons, maybe it's less? The fluoride ones don't last as long, but worth having. Their price is 220.00, and includes shipping. Yea, I bought four 9' ceramic filters. This thing will go into storage, so I'll have 2 full sets of filters to use when I need it. I really didn't know which to get, the black or the ceramic, but I figured I'd go with the ceramic. |

Anonymous Coward (OP) User ID: 1106916 ![]() 04/13/2011 07:35 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | For the $240.00 I got the Big Berkey and 2 sets of 9" ceramic filters. I bought this on ebay, and the seller told me the price is going up on Friday to over $300.00! I'm going to buy an extra set of the filters, so I'll have a total of 3 sets. I think that should last for a few years? |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 568763 ![]() 04/13/2011 08:57 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Excellent choice. One of their salesmen told me their prices are going up soon (& I believe him - even if he wanted a sale) - so great timing. I use the black filters - I live on water that gets farm runoff - (pesticides) & the black are best for that. On the price - It's much cheaper than living off bottled water for a year ... |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 900755 ![]() 04/16/2011 04:40 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | have berky light with black filters. use it daily. great filter. for those considering a purchase of a berky light, just know that if you get the little lights at the bottom, while very cool, they won't last beyond a year. Quoting: bot9That's good to know. I was kind of mad at myself for not indulging on the blue light, I thought it was cool! I take my Berkey Light apart every couple of weeks to clean the plastic, and filters. Much longer and it starts accumulating stuff. |

Girl Genius User ID: 1133676 ![]() 04/16/2011 04:55 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I bought one of these a few years ago and love it! Bought another for our other property and another for my daughter. All 5 gallon stainless. Plenty of extra filters, too. Don't drink anything else. Coffee, tea and soda are all made with the filtered water at our house :) For nothing is secret that will not be revealed… |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 1344713 ![]() 04/16/2011 04:57 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | yeah i got one two , i got to tellyou all a problem with all berkeys filters and how to solve it or your flushingmoney down the pan .... there is a fault with the fluride filters that screw on the bottom of the black or the ceramic .... where you screw it on it isnt air tight and once the unit is full at the bottom slight pressure causes the water to back up and come out the top .....everyone check for themselves you will see water around the top of the fluride filter .... the way to totally solve this and get the system working properly is to wrap some electrical tape or plumbers tape around the thread about 1 inch up wrap it about 6 times and kinda taper the thickness off ...so it goes up in layers like a cone and gets thicker when you screw your fluride filter on the pf2 it will go up to the filter creating a seal ... and then works brilliant ... not alot of people will know this but trust me all berkey flurise filters that screw on the candles have this problem ... |
