Woke up to more ...ugh..snow... and birds singing in the trees we're all awaiting Spring lol. It's +13 right now. Friend sent this to me thought some might want it is free to download Book Review: LDS Preparedness Manual Sometimes in life you get a pleasant surprise that makes you smile. Then there are times when you are so surprised that you gasp with joy. This was the case when I got the LDS Preparedness Manual and read it (Did we mention it is FREE). The Disclaimer First of all let me start off by saying again that SurvivalCache is free of politics, religion and of course it is free from advertisements. There are so many other sites that focus on those subjects that we decided to keep our site focused on Survival and Emergency Preparedness. We are not for or against any political party nor are we for or against any religion and for that reason we choose not to write on those topics. However, we are against advertisements and plan to stay that way. When we do come across items that contain excellent information for our community, we don’t care who wrote it or where it came from. The bottom line for us @ SurvivalCache is “Could this help one of our readers survive or be prepared for an emergency?” The LDS Preparedness Manual is an overwhelm YES! They have one of the best information sites and have the science to back up what they advise. As part of their church prophecy, they are told to store 1 year of food supplies, though originally it was 7 years. [link to thesurvivalmom.com] I have learned a lot over time in storing long term (LTS) and yes their sites have really worked. The Mormon 4, wheat/honey-sugar/salt/powdered milk, won't be a great meal but it will keep you alive and is actually the basics you should start with AFTER you have a 3 months supply of regular grocery store foods that you normally eat! Don't forget water. Without water you will die. Period. Most prepping sites tell you to have a weeks worth of water for you and your family/group. Get that amount and then work up to one month. Save 2-liter soda bottles, juice bottles and ask friends for them if you don't drink much. Rinse bottles, then add a bit of dish soap and a few drops of bleach, fill about a 1/4 way with water and shake well to clean. I pore this solution into the next bottle using a funnel, letting the bottle I just shook sit for about 15 minutes to allow the bleach/soap to clean further. When I have a bunch of bottles cleaned, I then start rinsing well. Then I fill with water. Those on city water don't really have to add a drop of bleach but I do just for peace of mind considering what may be in the water. Water should be rotated yearly (though some say every 6 months). Water doesn't go bad, but it does taste flat over time, so pouring water back and forth between two containers will help to add oxygen back into it and improve the taste greatly. If you have a good water filter, filter your water storage and then you can store up to two years. When you rotate, use it on your garden or plants, after letting it sit for an hour with lids off to burn off any bleach that may still be active. A water filter is your best friend, one that will allow you to take water from anywhere and make it safe to drink. Here is another link for food storage on the cheap. It is what I actually started with as we have never had a lot of money to spend on preps. You can swap out the corn for wheat and rice. Boring but if you add the spices you can make a lot of stuff. Read the whole blog. Also, I think that $200, will be closer to $300 now considering all hikes in food prices. [link to givemetheinfo.com] His basics are just that, very basic but tells you also how to make meals out of what he gives. In my searches I found the plan below. Simple, relatively inexpensive. You can buy a year worth of food for less than $200 The whole plan is as simple as; 200 lbs of pinto beans 300 lbs of yellow whole kernel corn 35 lbs of liquid shortening. And that’s it. This will supply almost 2000 calories per day for 365 days. You may notice there’s no freeze dried caviar on the list. :) But if you don’t die of epicurean boredom you will survive until the end of the year. And it’s a very good diet too. Both traditionally and scientifically. The Native Americans grew beans, corn and squash, They called them The Three Sisters. They thrived on the diet. The squash was a good addition. Scientifically, a beans and corn diet give a complete array of all the amino acids your body needs to live. They call it a complete protein. Guess I better stop, have made this into a book already!!! whiteangel also known as WA User ID: 1775746 United States 04/07/2013 02:47 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Here is what I have for disinfecting water as liquid bleach begins to break down in 6 months. A 1-pound pag of calcium hypochlorite in granular form will treat up to 10,000 gallons of drinking water Calcium hypochlorite is one of the best chemical disinfectants for water, better than household bleach by far. It destroys a variety of disease causing organisms including bacteria, yeast, fungus, spores, and viruses. Calcium Hypochlorite is widely available for use as swimming pool chlorine tablets or white powder that is much more stable than chlorine. This is often known as “pool shock”. How to Disinfect Water Using Calcium Hypochlorite Using granular calcium hypochlorite to disinfect water is a two step process. * To make a stock of chlorine solution (do not drink this!) dissolve 1 heaping teaspoon (about one-quarter of an ounce) of high-test (78%) granular calcium hypochlorite for each two gallons (eight liters) of water. * To disinfect water add one part of the chlorine solution to 100 parts water to be treated. * Let the mixture sit for at least one-half hour before drinking. Be sure to obtain the dry granular calcium hypochlorite since once it is made into a liquid solution it will begin to degrade and eventually become useless as a disinfecting agent. This also means you should make your treated drinking water in small batches, for example enough for a few weeks at a time at most. Another plus for using calcium hypochlorite to disinfect water for emergency use is that a little goes a very long way. A 1-pound pag of calcium hypochlorite in granular form typically costs only a few US dollars and can be obtained in any swimming pool supply section of your hardware store or online. This amount will treat up to 10,000 gallons of drinking water, which is enough for a family of four for some six or seven years at a gallon per day per person! Calcium hypochlorite will store for a long period of time and remain effective as a chemical drinking water treatment. So get rid of the household bleach and buy a can of Calcium hypochlorite for your disaster emergency water disinfection needs. It lasts far longer and treats far more water than the traditional chlorine bleach water disinfection treatment. whiteangel also known as WA User ID: 1775746 United States 04/07/2013 03:33 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Here is a simple charcoal, sand, gravel water filter. Your container can be anything, the taller the better, even a piece of PVC pipe or a 2-liter soda bottle. 1. A piece of cloth or grass, too keep everything in your container. 2. Layer of gravel 3. Layer of pea gravel or very course sand 4. Layer of sand 5. Thick layer of charcoal 6. Layer of sand 7. layer of pea gravel or very course sand 8. Layer of gravel Your dirty water should run through this at a slow drip rate. If it is going too quickly add more sand to your layers and make the hole it is dripping through smaller. This takes time. Most filter their water 2-3 times to get it clear or at least almost clear. Now, you need to boil this water for 5 minutes. Actually, you can bring the water to steaming and then let sit for 30 minutes and it will still sterilize the water. If you are low on wood for a fire, you can also leave the water in the sun light in a clear bottle for several hours, this will also pasteurize the water to safety. Water in a crisis situation should be an ongoing daily gathering. If you are collecting rain/snow water, it MUST be filtered - you know, acid rain? If you are concerned with radiation, filter thru a large amount of sand/dirt. This should be done away from your home/camp, in an area that will not be used. A hole should be dug several feet down. Your radiation filter should only be used for several gallons of water, then the sand/dirt should be dumped into the hole. The cleaned water from this, should then be further filtered as above. Please do internet searches on filtering radiation and nasty chemical/poisoned water, till you know just what to do! I personally have read so much on this topic, that the above info is all from memory and my memory sucks, lol. Since water is so important, you all would be wise to do the same thing, make it a memory, print it out, make sure you know how to get water. Coronal holes have really sent it into defense mode of late, and there are those days where theres nothing coming from the sun and we're getting hit. Thats what bending light , white angel and several of the folks on nins thread have been trying to figure out. Cosmic rays may be the culprit, the charts are screwy but there have been proton spikes to correlate the burst, plus they give me a massive migraine.LOL Keep posting you've got a good mind! “One of the saddest lessons of history is this: If we’ve been bamboozled long enough, we tend to reject any evidence of the bamboozle. We’re no longer interested in finding out the truth. The bamboozle has captured us. It’s simply too painful to acknowledge, even to ourselves, that we’ve been taken. Once you give a charlatan power over you, you almost never get it back.” – Carl Sagan |
