I present to GLP...LAKE EYRE!!! I fly over the continent between Perth and Brisbane regularly and I am still stunned when I look down and see the huge emptiness and dryness that is (was?) this country. The many hundreds and thousands of huge age old dry rivers and creek beds that have not seen a drop of water for millenia are a sight to behold. To see them filled with water and flowing once again, bringing life back to the red centre of Australia would be awesome. |

It is hard to comprehend the vastness of this country and just how amazingly woundrous it will be when the vast inland deserts begin to bloom with lushness and abundant life once again after thousands (millions?) of years. I nearly said in my earlier post, that I was 'told' once, that the ancient river beds will flow again. |

I had the privelage of being on the bar team of the birdsville hotel for the birdsville races 2010. amaZing!! We were taken on a three hour greyhound bus tour around the surrounds (incl. to the race track, via burke and wills tree, via the dimantina river). We were told back then, this was aug 31st 2010, that it was the greenest birdsville had eVer been in 20 years!!! Yeah, the amount of rain Aus has had over the last 8 months!! phew. even the Birdsville Cup Carnival day was cancelled, the first time in 128 years, due to the town reciving a large rain dump the arvo/night before, and enough to isolate the town due to floods, and close all 8 roads in/out! We got slammed at the pub, btw, for the neXt few days, including the Monday, which was supposed to be Staff Mad Monday (people had well left by then, traditionally ; ). Didn't get to go out to Lake Eyre at the time, but it was already over huge then! (maybe Chris will take me this year ; )) But had a friend who went by chopper on a 15 min tour around Birdsville on the sunday, and took my camera and heaps of pics for me! Can't wait to go back this year!!! But, I'm agreeing with you that Lake Eyre is as big as it's ever been in a very long time!!! stay safe ; ) |
