PHOTOS... pls help me work out what this is... Hi all, Quoting: TimewarlordAbout 10 years ago when my poppy was digging up his driveway in suburban Sydney his shovel hit something hard in the dirt.. he thought it was a rock but out of the dirt came this weird round object.. he didnt want it.. and I was an interested kid, so Ive kept it ever since.. Im now 25 and Ive been wondering what this thing is for years. Friends have speculated its a fossil.. dinosaur egg.. aboriginal artifact.. Honestly I have no idea... All i know is that it must have been there a long time... at least 70 years since the house was built? When poppy's shovel hit it hard.. digging up the dirt and rocks.. it didnt break or even crack it... its MEGA solid. it looks like clay..? but the texture is different, and unlike clay, you cant scratch a single flake off it.. its rock solid.. even with a knife.. scraping it.. it doesnt make a dint.. weird, i told ya.. The markings.. they look like fossils.. like worms? Its also.. HOLLOW.. and as you can see from the pics.. theres 1 tiny hole.. like a rectangle shape in the top.. when you shake it, you can hear something inside.. like sand.. and if you tip it upside down a little sandy stuff comes out.. but i havent wanted to make it all come out.. i want to keep it as it is. Its quite heavy.. but not majorly.. cant weigh it atm tho.. Anyone have any ideas as to what this is?? Thanks in advance. If someone can embed the pics, Id be most appreciative.. wouldnt let me upload them on GLP's site [link to www.flickr.com] [link to www.flickr.com] [link to www.flickr.com] [link to www.flickr.com] [link to www.flickr.com] [link to www.flickr.com] You have never taken that to a museum to be checked out , to a paleontologist for I.d. . If you are to be believed and that is real , then I would say it is an egg and very old and worth a whole lot of cash to the right person. Last Edited by Godsontoo-old on 04/23/2011 07:35 AM A Psalm of David. The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever. †. |

Quoting: GodsontooHi, no, Ive never taken it to be looked at.. I was only about 14 when I got it. Its been sitting in a box for years, but I just moved house and we have alot of room to display things, so I brought it out and my fiance was fascinated by it and wants to find out what it is.. Ive never really thought about getting it looked at tbh.. also thought people would think I was crazy to think it was anything other than some weird rock.. but GLP is the best place to be 'crazy' so thought id give it a go. Thanks for the post. I think I'll definitely contact a museum and see if someone can look at it. "Attitudes truly are contagious. So ask yourself one question… Is mine worth catching?" |

Quoting: DeejayMy friend came round the other day and we showed him, he thought it might be some aboriginal artifact.. he thought maybe it was used to heat up.. and let steam out of the little hole in the top?? I dont know.. It does look like clay.. but when you fel it.. its not like any clay ive ever seen.. and u cant scrape any powder off it, like u can with clay.. "Attitudes truly are contagious. It will save you tons of money, because they can use as a learning experience. With their findings you'll be better received at Museum. What ever the outcome of Univ. Play it safe, you don't know what you have in your hands. Once the cats out of the bag, it might be at risk. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1353682Good Luck to you. Make sure you come back and tell us what it is. Thanks for the advice.. Ive found this centre at the Melbourne museum in the city.. It says they help with identifications.. I think I'll try here first. What do u think? [link to museumvictoria.com.au] "Attitudes truly are contagious. So ask yourself one question… Is mine worth catching?" |

PHOTOS... pls help me work out what this is... Looks like a thunderegg or concretion; [link to en.wikipedia.org] [link to australianmuseum.net.au] Could be someone started chiselling a pattern on it...like they do with emu eggs etc. Btw the ones you see on wiki have been sliced in half...usually the ones not cut are round or egg shaped and often white/cream...like you have there. Thundereggs are not rare and not worth much....but it wouldnt hurt to ask the museum as it does look fascinating. Last Edited by Red Red Whine on 04/23/2011 10:50 AM |

I mean, orange peels that I have left out eventually ended up that texture and color, and the lines on the thing look like someone peeled some of it then put it back |
