Do you drive at night with all the interior lights on in your car? I hope not, I don't think that's safe. In fact, it's unsafe because you lose your dark adaptation and cannot see dimly lit objects that might be in the road until they're right on top of you. Yet that is the comparable anology to being in the shuttle. You wont see a panopoly of stars that way, you might see a couple of the very brightest if you try deliberately but that's it.
