Solar Wind blows some of Earth's atmosphere into space

" the sun belched forth a CME, a roiling bubble of plasma (electrified gases) that sailed along with the solar wind on a collision course with Earth. TIDE's plasma gun already had been scheduled to be operating, and Polar's orbital position was above the northern hemisphere, when the CME arrived.
"The amount of upwelling ions is a function of solar wind pressure or activity," Spann said.
So when the CME hit, it squeezed Earth's magnetic field, squirting particles stored in the magnetotail up the field lines towards the Earth's poles.

Magnetosphere- Solar Pressure still in the "RED" zone--that is a lot of pressure over a long period of time with very little protection from the magnetosphere.

The region which is dominated by the planetary magnetic field is called the magnetosphere.

Its dominating pressure is exerted by the magnetic field and the trapped charged particles within the magnetosphere while in the surrounding interplanetary space the dominant pressure is created by the solar wind.

This external pressure compresses the planetary dipolar field at the dayside and forms a long magnetotail on the nightside.

The magnetosphere traps many particles near the planet and, more importantly, shields most of the planet from the solar wind flux.

Charged particles in the planetary magnetospheres can originate from different sources and are generated by a large variety of mechanisms. For instance, neutral particles can escape the atmosphere of a planet or can be knocked off its atmosphere or surface of a moon. These particles can be ionized due to UV radiation from the sun or collisions with other particles and also contribute to planetary plasmas.

The magnetosphere of the Earth

Our planet Earth has an intrinsic magnetic field. Charged particles become trapped on these magnetic field lines, forming the Earth's magnetosphere. The impact of solar wind particles causes the lines facing the Sun to be compressed. On the other hand, the magnetic field lines facing away from the Sun get stretched and elongated, forming the Earth's magnetotail.

A number of layers and boundaries can be observed in near-Earth space where the solar wind and Earth's magnetic field meet. The first is the Earth's bow shock created when the supersonic solar wind is suddenly slowed as it approaches the magnetosphere. The edge of the magnetosphere is known as the magnetopause. There are two weak points in Earth's defenses, cusps which occur above the planet's north and south magnetic poles. Particles from the solar wind leak into the magnetosphere towards the Earth along magnetic field lines and cause the auroras.

These regions are explored in great detail by Cluster which delivers data since December 2000. Cluster comprises four identical satellites which fly around the Earth in a tetrahedral configuration. This allows studying small-scale structures of the magnetosphere and its environment in three dimensions. Onboard the Cluster satellites are the Research with Adaptive Particle Imaging Detectors (RAPID) that measure energetic particles in the energy range from 30 keV to 4 MeV. The acceleration mechanisms of energetic particles (particularly reconnection) and their composition in different magnetospheric regions are studied using this instrument. The measurements by RAPID play an important role in understanding of the magnetic storms and substorms.

this is a simple coronal hole and they do that! they have high wind speed. The pressure is not that high at all currently around 0.1 which is rock bottom.

If you click on the dial image at the above link, it will give you the details. currently this: the temperature is moderately elevated. The Bz as you can see right now is slightly negative. Despite the government reporting this was never a really high pressure storm, only moderately night when it first started.

The OVER REACTION on this forum, was well, over reaction. Ordinary storm, not that pin worthy. The sun is still in MIN with infrequent burst of activity, it was much more active that this at the end of the last cycle before this LONG min started. If you have been watching during the long min and you weren't watching anything before, I supposed this seems like real doom and gloom but it's not. Somebody in one of the threads above made the state that the tornadoes were caused by this but they happened BEFORE.

There were no flares on the sun, or CME, but the pressure is enormous and continues to grow. What could be the reason if it is not the sun?

There were NO CMES in this, the pressure is NOT HIGH, the thread has been misnamed completely. The magnetosphere is weak, that is why this storm is making such ingress. As evidenced by the AE INDEX still found here. [link to www2.nict.go.jp] BUT HIGH PRESSURE: NO

Ozone layer is breaking down, magnetosphere not protecting us much either. It's not just UV leaking through either: there's also x-rays, cosmic rays, microwaves, etc. If your thyroids swell, or you get pressure headaches, ear-ringing, dizziness, nausea, start speaking in gibberish - best get under some protection because your brain, ears and other organs are being slow-broiled.

Magnetic field still weak, Pressure still high.......

The next like is how it has looked for most of today and yesterday- pretty consistently-- weak magnetic field- lines not crossing, or crossing very little, and white or red tip on pressure image.

How long will this keep up, or will it get worse. This is unusual.

I do think it's possible that when the pressure drops after the storm passes we could have a major earthquake not long after

So does May Day carry with it some very earthy and lovely images; however, remember that a celebration of life cannot be complete without the acknowledgment of the balancing forces inherent in all works of Nature. From very far ago, we may have gathered at this time to participate also in a sacred sacrifice of life or blood, such as the rites of Cybele and Attis, or the burning of a wicker-man or carline. Our rites not only allow us to celebrate these times, but also to remember and respect their purpose and our place in them.

Cultural traditions, especially myth and religion, are tenacious things for what they are - largely founded and preserved in nonphysical forms, they assimilate what is appropriate and discard little. Rarely existing with a definitive beginning or end, the threads of culture transform through time, become colored by other influences and rewoven into other contexts. We are presented with a complex set of traditions and symbols surrounding our notion of May Day. This amalgam is regarded as relatively inclusive and purposeful in its' threads relation; however, we shall see that the main symbolic actions of May Day festivities (Bale-fires, the Maypole, flower baskets and well dressing, sexual frolics and so on) have each an intricate history: come from their symbology, origins and interactions, across time, geography, religions, politics and intent to become the fecund traditions of the release of the spirit of summer, May Day, Beltaine, Floralia....

May Eve was the beginning of the second division of the Celtic year in Gaul and Britain. Named for the god Bel or Belenos, Beltaine was one of the major gateways between the worlds (Samhain being the other) and began the period of the "greater sun" or "an ghrian beag," John Matthews writes in The Celtic Shaman. Chief among the customs surrounding Beltaine was the building of hilltop bonfires, accompanied by dancing, fire-leaping and driving the cattle herds around or between the flames. Belenos was a significant god in the Celtic world, representative of the active, light and life-quickening and therapeutic qualities of the high summer. Variant spellings of his name include Bel, Belinus, Beil, Belenos, Beli, Balor, Beal, Baldur and even Baal (hearkening back to Phoenicia) and mean "light" or "bright" or simply "Lord." His name was directly linked with Apollo's in Roman-Celtic inscription, but like Lugh and Brigid he was a deity with "solar" attributes but not considered the sun itself. The Irish and Scottish Gaelic word for the sun, "grian," is a feminine noun, according to Janet and Stewart Farrar in The Witches God.

Beltaine is not reckoned as a solar festival, despite the bonfire's solar symbology, as the four main festivals of Celtic Europe (Samhain, Beltaine, Imbolc and Lughnasadh) occurred according to agricultural and lunar phases. The later festivals of the two equinoxes and solstices were determinately solar. Like Samhain, the timing of Beltaine may have been according to the rising and setting of the Pleiades, an event marked by rituals all over the world, according to R.J. Stewart in Celtic Gods, Celtic Goddesses. The date was also reckoned as occurring on the first full moon in the sign of Taurus, halfway between the Spring Solstice and Midsummer Equinox, or after the blooming of the hawthorn tree, the tree sacred to the Goddess/Queen of the May in spring.

In the Roman pantheon, each of the Pleiades is associated with its own goddess (the Seven Sisters), and she who lends her name to May is Maia Majesta, the "Great Mother." The Roman goddess of spring, she is known as mother to Hermes (Mercury), who named her, and is analogous to the Irish Queen Medb or Maeve, the faery Queen Mab and Lady May. Representing the natural fertility of the land, she is consort to the God, who is often her son. As the Roman Empire spread into Celtic Europe, it discovered similarities between its pantheon and that of the Celts, and where the Romans could, they sought to reconcile theirs and the Celtic pantheon, being "lumpers" and not "splitters." While not a perfect fit, the introduction of Roman (and surreptitiously Asiatic) mythology into the Celtic world provided a fertile mix without supplanting the native host. As with the advent of Christian theology, the remotest areas of Highland Scotland, the Hebrides and Wales were the least affected by foreign influence and so retained their native religion for the longest time and in the purest sense.

thank you for being so understanding. I checked the magnetosphere before going to bed Sat night and it was white. got up Sunday morning and saw your thread. seriously, where is everyone? I don't know if this is even possible, but what if the magnetic field is G-O-N-E gone?

Let us all focus our conscious energy on our mother earth to strengthen her magnetosphere to overcome this adversity !!!
