The West wants Assad gone so the region will become more western influenced, and the East wants the opposite.

What is more dangerous now than other times in its 60-some years of history is that Syria is in a Ketu period, while transiting Ketu is going through Aries (the sign of war, force and aggression). This has been more provoked by transiting Mars in Cancer (since August 19th) - more than ever before, as it is also aspecting the Moon's sign (where Saturn and Rahu are pressing down).
No matter what Putin says, I think the situation may be aggravated from October 9, as Ketu-Mars subperiod starts, then from November, Ketu will go into the part of Aries (Aswini) which describes collective fight, war and struggle.
Bombing may have been postponed, but the coming six months do not look either glorious or peaceful for that country... early next year either...
