Walnut Tree Uses:

Nuts: By boiling the nuts in water and skimming the oil from the surface has been used by native americans in treating tapeworms, as well as fungal infections and othr skin diseases.

Bark: Shreading inner bark from this tree as a tea will work as a laxitive. One teaspoon to a cup of water seeped and then cooled and drink.

Can also be used to treat malaria. Make sure you dry and grind the inner bark, so you can quickly make tea. Sipping a little throughout the day has been used to cure it.

Because the tea Can also be used to treat dysteria because it will flush the bowels. Kinda seems opposite because dysteria makes you crap anyways, but this root will help you clense your bowels (ridden of the bacteria that causes dysteria cures it and this ensures you bowels are cleaned as a catalyst)

Root: Boil in a tea to make a enemic

all of the above has been used by native americans and passed down generations.

Maple Tree

Twigs: Skin bark from the twigs and soak in water for a few hours can be used as an eye wash

Bark: Boiled into a tea. Once cool can be douched to relieave menstrual cramps, and as a enema to cure a worm infection.

Sap: Can be used as a flavoring (duhh)

Dandelion leaves are full of nutrients. You can eat them raw as in a salad, juice them, saute them...the flwers can be eaten and the roots can be dried and made into a tea.

Purslane, another garden 'weed' is also very nutritious. Wood sorrel (looks kind of like clover) can be eaten raw and made into lemonade.

There's info online and there are books at the library on identifying and using wild plants.

Re: Recession proof List of Edible plants, that grow in your area for the time when TSHTF and nothing else to eat.
This is a great idea for a thread.

I have just recently tried dandelions and squash blossoms (no fruit, just the male blossoms). I've found that the dandelions in my area here in the central US are more bitter than garden lettuce, but that squash blossoms are sweet.

That said, I can't recommend enough the concept of growing food indoors via high tunnel aquaponics. You can grow extremely intensively, producing upwards of 5 times more food per square foot than traditional gardening/farming methods.

I built a high tunnel aquaponics system this winter, and I grow a wide variety of my favorite veggies year-round now, along with thousands of pounds of fish. Again, I can't recommend it enough.

My high tunnel aquaponics system is currently being featured on the home page of Coast-to-Coast AM's website. If anybody's interested, there's a thread about it here: Thread: Whoa, my aquaponics garden is featured on the C2C homepage!

Just used some leeks out of the yard today... made northern beans with ham-bone and cornbread muffins... and leeks on the side.

I always end up with a ton of small green granny smith apples, peaches look good this year. Russian olives will ALWAYS produce no matter what. Kiwi fruit. Muscadine grapes. Black walnuts, pecans- can you tell I'm a fan of trees and vines?

So what do we do if the environment is so damaged the plants wont grow let alone yield fruit and vegies.

Dried food is useless without uncontaminated water.

Why worry..... this is just a ride anyway.

Dont you know that with the right thought process things just 'turn up'.

If its time to jump off the ride then so be it but in the meantime make the most of what you have to work with because the better it gets, the better it gets.

I just found something on roses:

Both rose hips and rose petals are edible. Roses are in the same family as apples and crabapples, so the resemblance of their fruits is not purely coincidental. Rose hips also have a bit of the tartness of crabapples and are a great source of vitamin C.
All roses should produce hips, although rugosa roses are said to have the best tasting hips. These are also generally the largest and most abundant.

Caution: Don’t use rose hips from plants that have been treated with a pesticide that is not labeled for use on edibles.
