5.2-MAGNITUDE earthquake hits Indonesian island of Java

A 5.2-MAGNITUDE earthquake struck beneath the sea between Australia's Christmas Island and the Indonesian island of Java on Saturday, US seismologists said, but no tsunami warning was immediately issued.

There were no immediate reports of damage from the quake, which struck at 4.43am (2143 GMT on Friday, 5.43am Singapore time) 224km from Christmas Island and 303km from Tasikmalaya city in Java, at a relatively shallow depth of 12.5km, the US Geological Survey said.

Indonesia sits on the Pacific 'Ring of Fire', where the meeting of continental plates causes high seismic activity, and is frequently hit by earthquakes.
