I do however, have some awesome, killer tomatoe plants thriving on my patio that get sun, but no rain there. I water them myself, and I too have been collecting water since the day after Fukushima! I almost fell over when I discovered how much just basic, plastic Nursery Pots have gone up to! For a 3 gallon container, they were $1.03 apiece, and I had to buy a sleeve of 50..:P I about choked on that 1...LOL They used to be less than half that when I worked in the industry . But, plastic is a petrolium product, so when oil prices go up, everything made of plastic does too, apparently...:P I also went and got more dirt to fill them with...so, I need to add another $100 onto the total cost. I guess it isn't so bad, considering that it gives me 50 more food producing plants...$2 a plant, for everything it's going to produce. When I moved the babies dowstairs, and directly under the new lights, I had the lights a pretty good distance from them, so they could adjust to the new set-up. So far, it's looking good, no 'sunburned plants'...:) Today, I moved the lights down closer to the plants. Not as close as they are eventually going to be yet, but closer to let the plants adjust again, slowly. Everyone seems to happy down there, so far...:) It sounds like your tomato plant is gonna do well where it is...at least it has some protection overhead, from the patio...:) I'm happy to hear you've been squirreling away the water too.Just seemed like a smart thing to do, seeing the situation go down like it has been. Never know, it may be us that ends up needing that water in the future..:P I've been thinking about this water thing quite a bit here the past several days. I have a neighbor up the road that has a couple of wells. I'm thinking if I run out of my stashed water for the plants, that I can go up there and ask to fill some jugs . I'm thinking the well water won't have all the radiation in it...because it will have to go thru the dirt first, to get to the well. I know he dosen't use them anymore, because the water has become contaminated with E-Coli from all the development around here...but I can kill the E- Coli with some C.Silver added to the water...make it safe for the lil plants and future veggies. It's a bummer that every where you turn the price of everything has doubled, but it sounds like you are getting close to having most of your major supplies coverd. It is good that you have access to a well in your area. I had a well when I lived out west a couple of years ago, but I am closer to the city now and no such luck . The water table is very shallow here though, I sure wouldn't have to dig far...haha! My tomatoe plants are already growing like crazy and have set a lot of tomatoes. None of them ripe yet. I have two "Cherry", and one of the "Big Boy" plants. I really just wanted to at least have something this year, and at least I will have some nice salads if the lettuce doesn't poison me..ha! I have put a lot of effort in to my yard this year. I have a lot of long stem roses that have been bloombing beautifully...the gardenias did well, my hanging baskets of bouganvillas made it through the winter in the garage and back out on the porch; they have starting to bloomb like wildfire. I have a lot of stargazer lilys that look like they are going to do well but they are taking there time this year. I have an easter lilly that is just now bloombing?? This is TX, and it has already been in the 90's here this year, although it has cooled off considerably the last few days. As a matter of fact it is only 73 out today and it is nearing June, so maybe we aren't going to fry to a crisp after all, this year. | Woodsprite (OP) User ID: 1388809 United States05/19/2011 06:39 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Tomas, your flowers sound beautiful!!..:D I have always been such a flower junkie, my whole life!..:) I worked in the floral industry as a designer/manager, for years.. ;) Here recently, I've really been missing the floral work, and have thought about going out and trying to find me a lil part time job at a Florist, just to fill that lil hole in my heart that misses the work. It all got started when I had to pull out my Floral skills to create the Swamp and Forests inside the Haunted Houses. Used the skills I learned there, just used much bigger stuff....got me to missing working with beautiful, sweet smelling flowers every day...:P I think it's awesome that you have such a riot of color and forms happening....:D I think focusing on 'life, beauty, and color ' in our lives is real important right now, with so much sadness and darkness happening in our World today. My perrenial beds are starting to go off like a fireworks show too...:) I am concerned though about my Iris. I've never seen this before, but the leaves are messed up looking, and they aren't blooming as profusely as they normally do. The leaves have those spots on them that I have seen pics of on here. They are small, round 'dead spots', peppered on the leaves. It is on my Pink Primroses too...the ones under the eaves of the house are fine and gorgeous, but the ones further out along the walk, are covered with those round, dead spots on the leaves. I saw the pics on here last year, people thought it was the chemicals in the Corexit and stuff from the Gulf causing it. Never saw any around here , before this Spring...now it's showed up here too. |

Many have been battleing the same thing you are...just too wet to be able to work the dirt, to move them outside. My friends Michelle can't get hers out either..no one I know has been able to this year...:P After seeing the dead spots on the leaves of my perrenials this year, I'm happy I've made the investment to keep them indoors . Something is going on, that is affecting them badly..don't know if it's from the Gulf, or Fukushima, but something is happening. To answer your question about my set-up. It wasn't a kit, or a grow system..it's just stuff I bought seperatly, and put together myself ( because I am a poor person...LOL and don't have a $1000 bucks laying around to get all fancy like) The lights are just a regular shop light fixture I bought at Lowes. It's the only 1 that had a corded end so they wouldn't require wiring them together, an electrician. I built the U frames from inexpensive pressure treated 2x4's( they were $.40 cheaper than the regular non-treated ones). The bulbs for the shoplight fixture also came from Lowes...they have flourescent bulbs that mimic Sunshine, to fit the shop light fixtures...they were $6 and change for 2 bulbs. So far, the only thing that has had to come from a 'specialty place' has been the 3 G. Nursery Pots I purchased this week. I had to go to the place here in town that supplies all the Nursery people in the area. I've found Wal-Mart to be the cheapest place to get the Miraclegrow dirt from...Lowes wanted twice the price for half the size I've been getting from Wally-world. |

If you already have the soil, why would you need more? Right now, the soil that is packaged for sale, has not been exposed to the fallout...it was packaged before the event occured. Just make sure that it hasn't been soaked with rain, and it's all good. The air is being filtered thru the house system. True, it won't get 100% of all the fallout...but it sure will catch quite a bit of it. The plants will not be sitting out in the open air 24/7..with it accumulating on their leaves, and getting highly soaked with it everytime it rains. About the other food...well, people will just have to do the best they can, and try and avoid buying stuff that has been produced in the hardest hit areas. Right now, a good place to be getting it from is the Southern Hemisphere... I have been going outside, on a very limited basis...and when I do, I cover up, head to toe with clothing of some sort...change immediatly when I get home. I also don't go out in the rain.. When I am at home, and outside doing something like working in the flower beds..I'm wearing a dust mask, trying not to accidentally inhale any of the crap. We will never be able to avoid exposure 100%, but it will help, if you take steps to protect what is going in your body. If there is any way of trying to cut my Cancer risks...I'm gonna try it....because I just don't want to die that way. I may not be able to completly keep myself free of fallout...but I sure am going to be making a big effort, and hopefully, I will have some success in limiting my exposure to it. |

Quoting: WoodspriteMy baby plants were coming out of their second bigger houses, so It really needed to get moving along! I went to Lowes and found some nice shop light fixtures, that have a corded end, so I won't have to wire them together, they were $49 apiece, and hold 4, 4' bulbs . I got 2 of them, 8 'sunshine' bulbs. I bought 6 2x4x8's, and cut them down a bit in size...nailed them together to make a wooden U shape..I used barb-wire fence staples to use as 'hangers' on the top 2x4.( I did this, because I needed to not obstruct the overhead door. It is still easily close-able, should a bad storm come rolling in) After they were together, I stood them up and put each leg of the U into a single concrete block, and filled in around the 2x4 with small gravel. The lights hang from the top of the U, on chains, so I can adjust the light, up or down, as the plants require it.( the chains hook into the staple with an S hook) I took a huge piece of clear heavy plastic and first duct taped it over the garage door opening...both inside and outside, over the opening, and then I went back and used tacks to tack into the wood facing of the garage door on the outside. It's looking really good!!! ..:D My friend Michelle, brought me a bunch of Kitty Litter buckets that she had been saving ( LOL she has 9 cats and uses 3 of them a week!!!)...and they are the perfect size for holding a tomato plant, or an eggplant plant...:) So, now, I have this cool little set-up happening in the garage!...:D Since moving the babies into their bigger houses...it looks like I have a kick ass lil garden already happening! This entire project...including the 8 bags of 2 cu.ft., Miracle Grow dirt to fill all those buckets up( 31, 20 liter)....has cost me less than $300...about $250 to be exact. About the same as 1 trip to the grocery store these days...:P I don't think it's too great of an expense to not be worth doing. It's the ONLY way, I'll know 100% for sure, that my veggies are free of radioactive fallout. Is $250 too much to spend for that kind of assurance of food safety? I've also been storing water...everytime I empty a distilled water jug...I refill it with more water, to use later in the year to water the plants with...when the radiation levels in our tap water become high...I'll have some water not so heavily contaminated, to care for the garden with...:) I've been squirreling the water away, since the day I saw those 2 reactors explode over there...so I have a pretty good stash happening. So far, I have, tomatos, sweet peppers, eggplants, cauliflower, and broccoli growing in the basement..:) I plan on having some greenbeans, squash, and melons too. I have a whiskey barrel that has been cut in half..I'm thinking it will be a good place to make a mini- greenbean Teepee in...:) And I have seveal long windowboxes, that I think will work for the squash and stuff that isn't real deep rooted, they can consider the windowbox their 'hill'..spill out across the floor with their vines...:) Anyone else doing an 'indoor garden' this year? I'd love to hear about your set-up....have your's is doing so far...:) Hum, great. Oh btw, radioactivity goes through walls... |

If you screw up the plants will go into shock. Why? Why are the sunshine bulbs no good at all? I know how very important light is to the plants, and the timing of it. It won't shock the plants...it will confuse them if the light schedule is screwy. They won't know when it is time to flower,set seed ect. I have a huge source of Natural light..an entire floor to ceiling wall of Natural Light coming in the plant room. The artificial lights are not my only light source...they are a suppliment to it, and that's all. I could see the need if I had no Natural light at all...but I don't think with so much natural light, they would need to have those expensive, heat producing lights. I'm liking that the lights I have now don't generate heat. I won't be mistaken as a Weed Grower..LOL..hopefully won't have the cops here conducting a search of my growing operations! I should say...I'm not a 'Newbie" gardener. I've gardened my whole life, and spent several years working in the plant/seed industry, for Bunton Seed Co. This is just my first attempt at an indoor veggie garden. |

I've had a Hopi Ceremonial Tobacco plant that has been blooming and setting seed in my house since I brought it inside, last Fall....and I have no HID light, or any type of supplimental light to it at all! It's just in the bay window, and it's doing fantastic. So, I'm not believing you. The lil plants downstairs are on the same side of the house...and they have a floor to celiling huge window of natural light, plus the supplimetal sunshine lights. I think they are going to be just fine. You shouldn't be so negative, really. |

Quoting: WoodspriteMy baby plants were coming out of their second bigger houses, so It really needed to get moving along! I went to Lowes and found some nice shop light fixtures, that have a corded end, so I won't have to wire them together, they were $49 apiece, and hold 4, 4' bulbs . I got 2 of them, 8 'sunshine' bulbs. I bought 6 2x4x8's, and cut them down a bit in size...nailed them together to make a wooden U shape..I used barb-wire fence staples to use as 'hangers' on the top 2x4.( I did this, because I needed to not obstruct the overhead door. It is still easily close-able, should a bad storm come rolling in) After they were together, I stood them up and put each leg of the U into a single concrete block, and filled in around the 2x4 with small gravel. The lights hang from the top of the U, on chains, so I can adjust the light, up or down, as the plants require it.( the chains hook into the staple with an S hook) I took a huge piece of clear heavy plastic and first duct taped it over the garage door opening...both inside and outside, over the opening, and then I went back and used tacks to tack into the wood facing of the garage door on the outside. It's looking really good!!! ..:D My friend Michelle, brought me a bunch of Kitty Litter buckets that she had been saving ( LOL she has 9 cats and uses 3 of them a week!!!)...and they are the perfect size for holding a tomato plant, or an eggplant plant...:) So, now, I have this cool little set-up happening in the garage!...:D Since moving the babies into their bigger houses...it looks like I have a kick ass lil garden already happening! This entire project...including the 8 bags of 2 cu.ft., Miracle Grow dirt to fill all those buckets up( 31, 20 liter)....has cost me less than $300...about $250 to be exact. About the same as 1 trip to the grocery store these days...:P I don't think it's too great of an expense to not be worth doing. It's the ONLY way, I'll know 100% for sure, that my veggies are free of radioactive fallout. Is $250 too much to spend for that kind of assurance of food safety? I've also been storing water...everytime I empty a distilled water jug...I refill it with more water, to use later in the year to water the plants with...when the radiation levels in our tap water become high...I'll have some water not so heavily contaminated, to care for the garden with...:) I've been squirreling the water away, since the day I saw those 2 reactors explode over there...so I have a pretty good stash happening. So far, I have, tomatos, sweet peppers, eggplants, cauliflower, and broccoli growing in the basement..:) I plan on having some greenbeans, squash, and melons too. I have a whiskey barrel that has been cut in half..I'm thinking it will be a good place to make a mini- greenbean Teepee in...:) And I have seveal long windowboxes, that I think will work for the squash and stuff that isn't real deep rooted, they can consider the windowbox their 'hill'..spill out across the floor with their vines...:) Anyone else doing an 'indoor garden' this year? I'd love to hear about your set-up....have your's is doing so far...:) Hum, great. Oh btw, radioactivity goes through walls... LOL..thankfully, I'm not sitting next to the Corium Blob, so I don't think I'll have to be too awfully concerned about it coming thru the walls...:P On a good note...2 of the walls in the garage, are built into the hillside, and are about a foot and half thick concrete...:) |

You have the whole She-bang happening!! :D So, what are you using for the root crops to grow in? I've been thinking about the tater thing, and don't think they would do well in the plastic containers...carrots too. I was thinking about making some sort of shallow box/bed and filling it with dirt, see if they would grow and be happy in there.. What do ya think? I hear ya about being excited about the garden, I am too...:) LOL..I've been spending quite a bit of time 'fussing over' the babies...down there talking to them, trying to get everything the way they like it. I feel like old friends that have been away a very long time, have returned, and I'm just so happy to have them back!...:D LMAO..the other morning when I went and turned on their lights...I noticed I was singing to them. It all got started when I had to pull out my Floral skills to create the Swamp and Forests inside the Haunted Houses. Used the skills I learned there, just used much bigger stuff....got me to missing working with beautiful, sweet smelling flowers every day...:P I think it's awesome that you have such a riot of color and forms happening....:D I think focusing on 'life, beauty, and color ' in our lives is real important right now, with so much sadness and darkness happening in our World today. My perrenial beds are starting to go off like a fireworks show too...:) I am concerned though about my Iris. I've never seen this before, but the leaves are messed up looking, and they aren't blooming as profusely as they normally do. The leaves have those spots on them that I have seen pics of on here. They are small, round 'dead spots', peppered on the leaves. It is on my Pink Primroses too...the ones under the eaves of the house are fine and gorgeous, but the ones further out along the walk, are covered with those round, dead spots on the leaves. I saw the pics on here last year, people thought it was the chemicals in the Corexit and stuff from the Gulf causing it. Never saw any around here , before this Spring...now it's showed up here too. That is interesting about the Iris plants. Only about 1/3 rd of my dafodils came up this year and they wern't nearly as big as they were last year. That thread you mentioned about the corexit was probably the one Corizon posted about her blackberries. I posted on that thread as well, because my raspberries were doing the same thing. I just pulled the pics from photobucket for my pics of my raspberries posted on that thread the other day; interesting that it comes up now. here is the link to that thread for refrence if you want it.
