WELL WHAT IF? Comet Elenin is expected to get slowed down and slung shot back out into space by our Sun. Comet Elenin is expected to pass ahead of Earth then Earth will be in it's tail. Well what if the slow down and sling shot process generates enough force on Comet Elenin that it drastically changes it's trajectory? Bringing it closer to Earth and possibly slow it's projected trajectory down enough to cause Comet Elenin to collide with our Planet. Or just cause it to come closer to us that it wreaks havoc on out Planet. Quoting: El QuisqueyanoThat is a thought that crossed my mind today after thinking about the threads here about those Comets that have collided with our Sun. If any one has noticed, SOHO has deleted frames out of the recent movies from 20110515 to 20110516 when the latest Comet was seen on a collision course towards our Sun. These Comets usually get slowed down and slung shot back out into space by our Sun. In the process of getting slowed and slung shut their trajectory can be changed by our Sun significantly. Just a thought. What you guys think? Link to JPL. Run the Orbit diagram and see for yourself that if our Sun changes Comet Elenin's trajectory then it could possibly hit our Planet. [link to ssd.jpl.nasa.gov] ...This is why we have experts to calculate that risk... they are here for all our 'what if's'. I know you said it is just a thought, albiet an entertaining one, after all the calculations, i think they came out with a 'less than 1%' chance of a collision, even weighing in gravitational pulls! I doubt they forgot about that!! |

As a matter of fact, it moves faster as it nears the Sun, and is at it's highest velocity at perihelion. |

WELL WHAT IF? If anything the only problem that elenin could have that would cause ANY alarm would be if it broke apart. Which is something comets do and have done. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1104328i'm actually hoping this will happen. got to liven things up around here. imagine the fun if it does? |
