What does this mean? What difference does it reall make?

We live and we die. Way too much emphasis on playing money games inbetween point A and B.

It means you owe the bankers, big time...

The current debt limit, set by the US Congress, is set at a staggering 14 trillion and then some! We owe the bankers of the world, with out so called National Debt, more than $14,308,385,181,650.10

*IF* the US Congress passes this, it will be a bad sign to the world. Most other countries are cutting their budgets. The US is just arguing to blow the balloon bigger. Congress though, may be smarter. They have to approve it.

Methinks they will simply raise the ceiling, otherwise country grinds to a halt.

Can't do that forever though, just postponing the inevitable.

Only way out is massive defaults and or inflation leading to new currency emerging then it all starts again.

Oh, right ... just 'borrow' it from retirement funds. Now I wonder how people might react to that?! When they increased the retirement age in a number of countries because there wouldn't be enough money otherwise, people took to the streets - except Canada, where no one ever complains about anything, lol.

Many investors do not look further than the hours before them. Right now stocks have been correcting and short-term funds have been shifting in the USD (DXY) to make something of a sure bet. If the stocks turn-around, the USD will likely drop again.

It is also possible, if things go really crazy in the world, that the USD will still be the safe-haven it has been for the last 60 years. Although the US has a major debt crisis, there are still many that argue the size, mass and maturity of the US economy gives it an edge still.

Interesting. They are even turning on Buffet on the debt problem! (of course Buffet is also batting for Obama on this) US may be large, but the bigger they are, the harder they fall...

Warren Buffett says the U.S. can't have a debt crisis, but plenty of experts say he’s wrong about the threat to America, writes Barry Wood.

I'm nowhere near the States, but I think the figures are mind-boggling. And Obama reminds me of Nero, fiddling while Rome burns. No wonder Trump doesn't want to stand for the next presidency - who would? a more poisoned chalice can't be imagined!

I hate what our federal government is doing to our country.redface

Pray Psalm 23:

Lord, make me to lie down in green pastures, so I can get a good night sleep even though all kinds of doom is heading our way.

Lord, lead me beside the still waters, where all the economic doom and hand-wringing has no effect on me.

Lord, prepare a table for me in the presence of my enemies. I won't worry about the food and gas prices because it's "in God we trust."

Even though I walk through the Valley of the Shadow of Death, and the Valley of the Shadow of Debt, I will fear no evil and fear no bankers for You are with me.

The Lord is my shepherd. If that makes me a sheep, so be it. I'd rather be a sheep than a wolf in sheep's clothing.

I really don't understand economics so can some clever person explain ...

1, Who is this 14 trillion owed to?
2, What happens if you just don't pay it back? Do they send the bailiffs round?

wrong.

If we default, then every nation who owns treasuries will dump them on the open market. The dollar will collapse and all Americans will instantly become paupers.

then war.

Since they've said they'll be no default until August 2, they'll make a compromise (probably something pretty unpopular) at about 11pm on August 1.
