do you think it will really matter, all that is happening now is a bunch of political sideshow posturing and nothing meaningful is happening. face it, politicians will never be responsible with money

OP: Don't give them any ideas. They would love to raise it that high or higher.

or as Dave Barry wrote > a "StompZillion" ( a really big number that just makes you stomp your foot)

Re: why not go ahead and raise the debt ceiling to 25 Trillion ... or 50 Trillion
If I followed the lead of "my" government, I would have gone out and bought a car during "cash for clunkers" and a new house a few years before that. At this time I would be in debt to my eyeballs, so (like the government) I would simply take out a new credit card to pay the other debts. When that card is maxed out, get another to pay it off and so on.

Does this sound smart?

If you include unfunded obligations like social security, the US owes over 200 trillion dollars.

This is on an income of less than 2 trillion dollars.

Scaling it down, this is like making 200,000 a year and owing 20 million dollars.

There is no possible way that the US debt can ever be repaid.

While they're at it, why don't they just let everybody print their own money, too?

Everybody gets issued a government printing press. It will amount to the same thing in the long run but people might get the point faster.

Why would you sell your car for X dollars to someone to give you the same thing you could whip up in your basement?

When the government acts this way, or the FED, then soon nobody wants theirs either.

They might as well ,,,

Coz NO ONE can even begin to comprehend a number this large. This is why they toss it around like they do.

its just a number to them. With no meaning or anything to pyhsically refer it to.

It is a conception.

nowwhat
Each time a person stands for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he or she sends forth a tiny ripple of hope. And crossing each other from a million different centers of energy and daring, those ripples build a current that can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance. Few are willing to embrace the disapproval of their fellows, the censure of their colleagues, the wrath of their society. Moral courage is a rarer commodity than bravery in battle or great intelligence. Yet it is the one essential vital quality for those who seek to change a world that yields most painfully to change. I agree, why even state that you have a debt ceiling. It means nothing. Ok, we will borrow this much, and then no more. No, ok, just this much then, and then no more. Oops, ok this much then, and then that is it. Oops......and on and on it goes. What a crock of b.s. What a bunch of retards acting like retards in front of a bunch of retards. Get real people.
