No definitive cause can be determined for the plane crash that killed former Senator Ted Stevens and four other people in August, the National Transportation Safety Board said Tuesday. The board agreed that “temporary unresponsiveness� of the pilot could be to blame, but that the reasons cannot be determined. The terrain awareness and warning system had been inhibited, meaning the pilot had only a few seconds to respond before hitting a mountain in southwest Alaska.

Before that 1978 crash, Mr. Stevens reportedly spoke of a premonition that he would die in a plane crash, a fate that is not unknown to many in Alaska who travel the vast state in small planes.
