But over the past few years that I have been watching, I notice that some of these are in places that I had not seen mentioned before. The biggest worry at this stage about the cluster in South Australia, is that area is closest to our most recent volcanic activity. These are lists of all the volcanic areas in Australia, and when they last erupted. The ones in Queensland I believe are more unique, than ones in Western Australia. Again, close to volcanic activity in the form of our old volcanoes near the coast there, and the volcanic islands off our coasts. Here is an article from 2009 about a geologist who believes that Australia is long overdue for a volcanic eruption. Now that would be interesting to see. In fact, he mentions the Western Victorian to South Australia and the Townsville areas. He says any future eruptions are unlikely to come from existing volcanoes but rather from new sites nearby. "It's far western Victoria, starting somewhere about Colac, through Camperdown, Warrnambool, across to the border and then in south-eastern South Australia, the area around Mount Gambier and Mount Shank, both of which are quite young volcanoes," he said. "Then in Queensland there is a range of areas starting inland from Townsville where there has been some recent activity and it stretches all the way up to Cooktown. I can say that while we get the odd ones very small, mainly under 2 mostly 1s.. the recent activity is in my humble and obviously unexpert opinion, on the increase.. What I get peeved about is that Geoscience australia doesnt list the quakes as they happen, sometimes its a full 24hrs later before they post it even happened. I too am interested in the swarm occuring in S.A.. two weeks ago there was a similar swarm in W.A. however I do agree that up near the top end of W.A its likely the blow back from the banda sea region quakes.. The queensland ones are to me personally of concern, while little ones around 1 - 1.5s have been recorded.. 3's and 4's are as rare as hens teeth.. Lets keep an eye on it and find out what we can.. coz it sure as hell isnt being reported in our news... surprise surprise.. That is the other thing which makes any quaking in Australia more interesting at the moment. To have had those rather large ones, followed now by more large (for Aussie standards) ones in SA so soon after, shows it is all happening here as well. Don't forget the Victorian ones a few years ago and the Kalgoorlie quake. All of those have been over the space of a few years. Yet how long has it been since the Newcastle event, which was our last one of a similar size? |

While you've been concentrating on broader (and possibly more realistic) theories and I'd rather see your opinions receive attention than the slurs that have been posted in the other thread. We just managed to shoot ourselves in the foot over the rapture due to hit on May 21. I have been carefully watching all the quakes in your area though (including McQuarrie Is) and anything remotely close. It all looks so close on the USGS maps anyhow. Our prayers are with you. |
