AUSTRALIAN EARTHQUAKE REPORT AND WATCHES

I live in Townsville and that last 5.3 near Bowen was totally unexpected and rather creepy. North Queensland is probably one of the quietest earthquake areas in the world so having your bed move underneath is unnerving when it happens once in a blue moon. Even thought the rim of fire running through New Guinea and Indonesia is much more active. Tonga regularly gets rating 6-7 quakes and they don't notice them. It would be interesting to see if the activity on the Australian mainland is going up significantly, apart from the standard Earth dynamics where She is moving all the time...

Western Australia and South Australia have been having minor mag swarms the past week.. all 2s and low 3s, havent posted them all but they can be viewed here for anyone who is interested

Hi T.. yes it was.. aus geo was down the last couple of times i looked but basically they get outside of aus info from usgs.. so what ever shows up on the global incident site is what shows up on aus geo.. ive not found the information any different..

With all the volcano activity around the globe lately, I thought it was interesting that the dormant volcano region in Victoria had another quake today..

Scientists are now warning that volcanoes in Western Victoria and South Australia are due to erupt.

The prediction comes just hours after two earthquakes hit the state this morning.

Using new dating techniques, University of Melbourne scientists have found that the volcanoes usually erupt every 2000 years, with the last eruption at Mt Gambier, South Australia, 5000 years ago.

Earth sciences Professor Bernie Joyce says Australia needs a plan in case of an eruption.

It comes as Victorians are warned to brace themselves for more tremors after a shallow magnitude quake hit at 11.32am, sending shockwaves through towns and suburbs more than 100 kilometres away.

A series of tremors lasting up to 15 seconds have been felt across Melbourne's CBD and southeastern suburbs.

A second, smaller quake shook Korumburra, with reports it was again felt in Melbourne, at 12.37pm

Senior seismologist Clive Collins said people should prepare for aftershocks in the coming hours.

"There will be aftershocks, that's a certainty," he told the Herald Sun.

"We still expect lots of smaller ones.

"After the last significant quake in Victoria there were more than 200 aftershocks."

The tremors shook Melbourne office buildings and many homes across the state, including Warragul, Ferntree Gully, Sunbury and as far north as Melbourne Airport.

Gee EW,

It is starting to happen in OZ too.

At least u guys have a large land area so u have more places to get away from volcanoes etc, if any do erupt.

I am really hoping that just our regular ones erupt, if any.
Because hardly anyone lives near them and we are used to coping with them going off.

Once again the circle sizes on the map according to geo aus site scale do not match what mag they say it is ..

this one in W.A is listed as a 3.5 but the circle size is a mag 4 - 5.9

They also have it ringed which means its listed as a 'significant' quake

We had a 5.7 very near to me last night and of cours USGS have it as a 4. something.

Lucky we are too clever to get fooled eh!

Two quakes within the past hour in Southern Australia. They form a triangle with one in Indonesia as well, within that same hour.

3.5 Near Kojonup, WA.
2.2 Near Korumburra, VIC

Small quakes, yes, but what a shock it was to go to the map and see two RED circles on our continent.

Thanks guys for all the input, its so appreciated.. I think the swarms in W.A that we have been seeing constantly over the past 3 mths are definately of sign of something.. what that something is, is anybodies guess..

We have 3 areas of concern in Oz as i see it.. Western Australia has been having many many quakes for the past 3 -4 months... South Australia is having swarms of smaller 1's - 3's.. and Victoria has had two sets of swarms..

All three of these areas as far as I can tell are where dormant volcano's lie..

Something to keep an eye on maybe..

I wonder if those rumours about Australia sinking in parts, NZ losing the S Island and growing a huge extension to the North of the North Island & a huge new continent/island rising from the Kermadek region are true?

Sure enough the S Island of NZ is being moved a lot, Australia is getting many more tremors than it usually does, and the Kermadek region has had virtually non-stop EQs for months and months.

I was sufficiently interested a few months ago to see if I could find any corroborating evidence of the Kermadek region rising from the depths, and although I found nothing concrete, I found quite a few sites saying the sea bottom was rising at a rate of some metres per day. Whether they are tru or not I can't say.

Also recently, news of parts of S Asia perhaps sinking might mean the sea level is actually rising, and the rising might be due to the sea floor somewhere in the Pacific moving up and the sea level subsequently rising?

Well there are a few thousand metres worth of sea in that area, and as I said, there is no really tangible proof a new island is going to be appearing above the water there, but then there are also stories of how the buouys monitoring such things as the depth of the sea - have been taken offline or are otherwise silent.

............... Mmmm!?!?
