Circles of elaborately carved stones from about 9,500BC predate even agriculture

As a child, Klaus Schmidt used to grub around in caves in his native Germany in the hope of finding prehistoric paintings. Thirty years later, a member of the German Archaeological Institute, he found something infinitely more important: a temple complex almost twice as old as anything comparable on the planet.

"This place is a supernova," said Schmidt, standing under a lone tree on a windswept hilltop 35 miles north of Turkey's border with Syria. "Within a minute of first seeing it I knew I had two choices: go away and tell nobody, or spend the rest of my life working here.

The above is a misleading statement by the media in the OP's OP.

The discovery proves that scientists don't know as much as they think they do and that discoveries are still being made. Most likely agriculture came about at a time that scientists are unaware of.

Elaborately carved stones and temples speak of organized religious rites at some point. People with no food cannot sit around carving stones. They would have to expend efforts hunting/growing food.

Good article otherwise. Thanks for posting OP.

Hey how did the bannanas get so big?
“The world is like a ride in an amusement park. And when you choose to go on it you think it's real because that's how powerful our minds are. And the ride goes up and down and round and round. It has thrills and chills and it's very brightly coloured and it's very loud and it's fun, for a while. Some people have been on the ride for a long time and they begin to question: "Is this real, or is this just a ride?" And other people have remembered, and they come back to us, they say, "Hey, don't worry, don't be afraid, ever, because this is just a ride." And we kill those people.” - Bill Hicks (R.I.P)

The winter of this year was called the Cataclysm or the Deluge, — the Summer, the Ecpyrosis. The popular traditions taught that at these alternate seasons the world was in turn burned and deluged. This is what we learn at least from the Astronomical Fragments of Censorinus and Seneca. So uncertain were the commentators about the length of this year, that none except Herodotus and Linus, who assigned to it, the former 10,800, and the latter 13,984, came near the truth.** According to the claims of the Babylonian priests, corroborated by Eupolemus,*** "the city of Babylon, owes its foundation to those who were saved from the catastrophe of the deluge; they were the giants and they built the tower which is noticed in history."**** These giants who were great astrologers and had received moreover from their fathers, "the sons of God," every instruction pertaining to secret matters, instructed the priests in their turn, and left in the temples all the records of the periodical cataclysm that they had witnessed themselves. This is how the high priests came by the knowledge of the great years. When we remember, moreover, that Plato in the Timaeus cites the old Egyptian priest rebuking Solon for his ignorance of the fact that there were several such deluges as the great one of Ogyges, we can easily ascertain that this belief in the Heliakos was a doctrine held by the initiated priests the world over.

Keep digging on this one.

No human bones at the site. No human tools. Depictions of humans decapitated. A "theme" of aggressive animals. The nearby human settlement had what can be described as pits for humans to be kept and slaughtered, babies found in jars, and evidence of roasting people in bronze pans.

Then, whoever built and ran this site, intentionally buried it with tonnes of sand. Keeping it a secret.

Who were they and what were they doing?

Were they the "gods" to the local humans? And did they eat people?

it was abandoned/buried, and revisited over and over over a course of thousands of years starting 9500 bc. it is probable that there were gatherings there before 9500 bc too.

that age was an age at which all mankind was migratory. only permanent societies were ones who lived near always readily available sources of food.

apparently you are not able to fathom what 'BEFORE domestication of wheat' means.

back then people had to migrate to eat food in winter/summer. you couldnt stay in one place for long.

and during migrations, best way to hide something is to bury it, if you know its place to uncover it later.

These circles may not be what everyone thinks. Check out this article about a new solar energy station that works at night:

....looks like a giant art project. But this symmetrical, circular pattern of mirrored panels is the world's first solar power station that generates electricity at night.
The Gemasolar Power Plant near Seville in southern Spain consists of an incredible 2,650 panels spread across 185 hectares of rural land.
The mirrors - known as heliostats - focus 95 per cent of the sun's radiation onto a giant receiver at the centre of the plant.

you people really crack me up with excessive forcing out of conspiracy theories sometimes.

not EVERYthing is a conspiracy.

this, was a fucking worship site of migratory neolithic people, who hunted/gathered for food.

in case you didnt notice, the T shaped statues are actually statues of people. there are arm like carvings extending from their top, and they seem to be carrying various hunted animals under their arms.

you shouldnt attribute silly stuff to these. the people are represented as Ts, because this was the highest form of articulate art back 9500 bc.

yes, there has been local cultures which had higher accomplishments in portraying people and objects. but, that was not a common feat.

i LIVE in this country, and i have HAD saw/read/learned/visited much more than what you can read from fucking web.

yes, people with stone axes wearing animal skins built ALL these. they built a lot of other stuff too.

not everything you see is an ancient lost civilization/conspiracy.

yes, neolithic cultures were advanced enough to carve fucking stones into T shapes to portray humans.

it is as much art as they could, and you will see the same kind of artistic capacity in the carvings of milo venuses etc from the same neolithic periods.

i know that because these seem like distant, mystic stuff to most of you living overseas, and hence kicks up your imagination.

but when you actually visit the places which these were found, the caves, structures, clay houses etc, and see such stuff in places where they were in ACTUAL use (ie in small stands/altars in clay houses), and see the shit of the people living there 6000 years ago by the same place, frozen in time for eternity, you know that these were not overarching lost civilizations or conspiracies.

A bit of info on Cayonu, Turkey- near Gobekli Tepe:

[link to www.ancient-wisdom.co.uk]

'In Çayönü from the earliest monumental buildings, or special buildings it is clear that they were doing something with some kind of liquid. As for the earliest one, the Flagstone Building, it is certain that the floor was polished and even in order to get some kind of flooding, and also in the Sandstone Building there was a water channel going through it, and the Terrazzo Building also had a kind of channel drainage. So was it blood, or water or wine? It is difficult to say, but considering the presence of the Skull Building it seems more the nastier end of the story than the nicer end. Also in Çayönü, we had in one building these parts of a burial – not a complete skeleton – intentionally put in a clay coffin above the ground, with some tools associated. It was the strangest grave we got and it must have had something to do with the function of that building'. (3)

Gobekli is also in the region where the Sumerians later claimed the gods came down from the mountains.

catalhoyuk is a city/settlement from 7500 BC. it is only 2000 years younger than gobeklitepe, which the article that this thread talks about describes.

this is just a few thousand years (or maybe even at most 1.5 k years) after domestication of wheat.
