I was born in Salem and the depravity of the situation back then is pretty well known by those who are interested.

Western Faiths took on a malicious form centuries ago and have been fueled by fear, hate and manipulation ever since. There is little we can do but try to form communities devoid of these doctrines and try to rise above it.

I am not sure it was a sexuality issue on the part of the clergy that started and perpetuated the witch hunt. I think there was a rumour of a mould on the rye that their bread was made from, and it was postulated as a cause for the behaviour that differed from the norm, drawing attention to these women.

Additionally, I think it was the Puritan's with their grim autocracy that had a brief moment in history, literally crucifying anyone that dared to question their tyranny, and I rather think the RCC had a lot to do with it.

This is something incumbent on us as citizens, to never allow that gender abuse to ever reoccur in our lifetime.

You are misdirecting from what is actually happening in the 3rd millenium in Africa, where not only old women are harassed, pursued and sometimes lynched becaused they are considered to be witches by an ignorant populace, but EVEN CHILDREN!

Many African societies are famous for their "respect" of children's rights... not just when even children have been pointed at as being "witches" (think about that) and, if they are lucky, are put in some safe place by child protection services (which usually are private efforts), but in countries such as Tanzania where there are many albinos whose body parts are believed to have magical "healing" properties, and albinos (even chldren) have been known to be abducted and have had some body part or parts taken from them (with all the horror this implies).

Witch hunts in Europe were very active for some time and I know there were quasi professional witch hunters for a time who got paid for each woman they determined to be a witch.

This was really religion gone completely wild, and often IMHO what we are seeing was simply the abuse of power by a few crazed, insane people in power (like they have been known to behave at times, when they could get away with it).

And if anyone did that, it was most likely some secular prince or potentate who had gone crazy.

It's like that French king (unless it was an English one) who was attacked by someone with a small knife that could impossibly have killed him, all the more as he was wearing at that time a thick coat.

But the attacker was tried and sentenced to be tortured in the most horrible ways before finally being put to death.
