I have noticed the sun hanging around longer... and having some really odd looking sunsets this season. We also had one of the most intense lightning storms I have ever seen last week. There was rapid-fire lightning strikes coming from three different spots on the horizon hitting about every half second. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 1418279 ![]() 06/13/2011 09:38 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I don't have an explanation but can agree i have seen the same. About a month ago in Nashville in the middle of the night I noticed the sky being a very rich deep blue. It was beautiful but also very strange. I have noticed it a few times since then. I have also heard the birds going nuts at like 2 or 3 in the morning a couple of times also. Both things struck me as odd, never having noticed either in my whole life. |

This winter we had fireball lightening and thunder-snow and now when it thunders it just seems to go on forever....... like long rumbling freight trains. A few weeks back there was a thunder noise that sounded like an actual explosion. The next day I checked with neighbors and everyone thought it hit just outside their door...... crazy! |

To our North are National forests so no city lights and to our South is Asheville. We see city lights in the South nightly but a couple of weeks ago around 1 AM, we noticed really bright blue sky to our North. I don't recall EVER seeing lights in the North because there are no cities in that direction to account for the light. VERY STRANGE! Last Edited by ^Watcher^ on 06/13/2011 09:53 AM |

I live far away from any city or light pollution - I've lived here for many years and typically at night (even in the summer) the skies stay dark until 5:00 am - now it's so electric-blue outside at 3:00 am that you can actually see everything - even without a flashlight. I would like any information on what could be causing this. |
djmason34 (OP) User ID: 1344812 ![]() 06/13/2011 09:59 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | It's absolutely normal for northern hemisphere in this time of a year. I wonder why you didn't notice this in the years before. And the dark-blue sky is not a sunrise yet. I've lived here for years....... I often would wake up pre-dawn to view the constellations and star-gaze, look for meteors etc .... the sky is different as of late - it is definitely not a typical June Adirondack sky..... it is a deep looking bluish color |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1303046most days here have been overcast - heavy clouds and gloomy - we get very little sun these days and all weekend the temps did not get out of the mid-50's - last night I had to turn on my wood-pellet stove because it was so cold. Unprecedented in June. It clears out every night after sunset |

Only then did we realized that all the neighbor's roosters were crowing as well and have done so repeatedly since then...something else to wonder about along with the birds chirping. Anyway, when we got up, we thought there was a full moon out because everything was so lit up. There was no moon anywhere in sight. I'm not buying the whole "Northern Hemisphere lights up this time of year" thing from Moscow poster. First of all, we are not THAT far up in the Northern Hemisphere to see this effect and, like you, we have lived here for the past 6 years and I am a "night owl" so I have seen my fair share of night skies. THIS is NOT normal! |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 1426491 ![]() 06/13/2011 10:13 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I live on the East coast too and did some research into this when I was a kid. It is caused by light reflecting off of the surface of the water on the eastern side of the Atlantic reflecting off and into the atmosphere causing a diffuse lighting effect. Very cool you've made note though! Quoting: Anonymous Coward 787140Where did the reflecting light come from? Some people on this site reported not being able to see the moon sometimes, but still the sky is bluish late at night. |
