For instance, the broccoli and carrots were so small that I just sprinkled them into egg cartons with the soil (rather than only one or two seeds per hole). Now, it looks like they should be thinned out but they are so tiny, I don't even know where I'd begin.
What do you suggest? |

You need to thin them out to give the room to grow roots and develope..if you don't they won't grow much and clutter each other. Once they have a few leaves, they need to go into the grownd or into bigger pots to grow. Don't feel bad about destroying a few to make room for more...that's what it is all about. Another reason you always use more seed than you need is cos there is an average germination rate..some will--some won't, and you are better off with too many seedlings to thin out than not enough to grow your food. |

Yeah, my husband came out with the egg cartons....we have chickens so everyone gives us a bunch of them. I began using the cardboard ones because I planned on cutting them out and putting them right into the ground....but then I decided to just pop them out. It will be easier and faster that way. The cabbage and carrots are literally covering the egg compartment like a carpet; I don't even know how to thin them they are so small. Maybe I should wait until they get a little bigger? You know what else I was thinking.....with the potatoes.....I know you are supposed to hill them up but what do farmers so when they have acres and acres of plants? |
