New Britain was largely formed by volcanic processes, and there are several active volcanoes on the island, including Ulawun (the highest volcano in Papua New Guinea), Langila, the Garbuna Group, the Sulu Range, and the volcanoes Tavurvur and Vulcan of the Rabaul caldera. A major eruption of Tavurvur in 1994 destroyed the East New Britain provincial capital of Rabaul. Most of the town still lies under metres of ash, and the capital has been moved to nearby Kokopo.

Deep Purple - Smoke On The Water

[link to www.youtube.com]

They burned down the gambling house
It died with an awful sound
Funky Claude was running in and out
Pulling kids out the ground
When it all was over
We had to find another place
But Swiss time was running out
It seemed that we would lose the race
Smoke on the water, fire in the sky...............

6.6-magnitude quake hits New Britain region, Papua New Guinea06-16-2011 09:18 BJT

SYDNEY, June 16 -- An earthquake measuring 6.6 on the Richter scale jolted New Britain region, Papua New Guinea at 0003 GMT on Thursday, the U.S. Geological Survey said, but no tsunami warning was issued.

The epicenter, with a depth of 21.50 km, was initially determined to be at 5.9944 degrees south latitude and 151.0950 degrees east longitude.

The quake struck 175 km east of Kandrian on New Britain and 577 km northeast of the capital Port Moresby.

An official at Geoscience Australia that it was not likely to have caused any damage.

Papua New Guinea, which is mired in poverty despite rich mineral deposits, sits on the so-called "Pacific Ring of Fire", a hotspot for seismic activity due to friction between tectonic plates.

That's 8 medium to medium large quakes, in the one place, in 7 hours. After seeing what happened in Chile and the Eretrian/Ethopian border over the last week, could this be another volcano waking up? Does anyone know if there is one in that immediate area?

Just watching, as always, and wondering?

stay safe

I started this thread about an hour ago. Thanks for more information. The new britain region has been having medium to medium large quakes for the last month or so, I've noticed. But never 8 (well 7 if you say the first was a double) in 7 hours!

All we can do is keep watching and see if it continues, or if it quietens down. With the Chile and Etheopian volcanos in the southern hemisphere over the last week or so, it's been a scary week. Maybe it's not over yet?

Always just watching, wondering ; )

stay safe.

I was thinking the same thing when I saw the EQ's that have been going on there "8 - 4.5+" in the last 10 hours...normally when we see that happen, we also see plumes of ash/dust go km's up in the air...
Kind Regards,
Dan

Mount Yasur is an active volcano on Tanna Island, Vanuatu (lat/long 19.52 S, 169.43 E) with a height of 361 m (1,184 ft) above sea level, located on the coast near Sulphur Bay. <snip>

Vanuatu is over near fiji. The New Britain Region, which is what we're talking about, is in Papua New Guinea. Two different areas. There are thousands of active and non active, and a few super-volcano's that can pop anytime all around the area of Indonesia, PNG, Tonga and Fiji/Vanuatu. It's the Pacific Ring of Fire.

wondering and, watching...
