Cops knocking on my door at 3am last night
A little backstory first:
I kind of live in the ghetto of Joliet, IL. The 4-unit apartment building I live in used to be a crack den, but most of the riffraff pretty much moved out right before my fiance and myself moved into an apartment here. The last of the riffraff just moved out 2 months ago, and that apartment got flipped and rented to a college student a few days ago. Another young couple lives hero with an infant, and the maintenance guy also lives here, and we talk pretty regularly. Only decent people live here now. Definitely the most improved place on the block!

Anyway, A few weeks ago my fiance's brother noticed a couple cops walking on foot one night a couple blocks down the road. We live in a ghetto area, and there is a lot of activity down these streets, so the cops do like to patrol this area. Plus the police station is 3-4 blocks away.

So Last Night:
My fiance and I are asleep in our bed, and I wake up to the sound of knocking on my kitchen door.

KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK

KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK

At first I thought it was my brother and that maybe he forgot his key (he stays at my place most nights). But as I'm groggily heading towards the door, I see through the window that a flashlight was being shined around my front walkway, and then shining through my window looking in! So I go back around the corner and did NOT answer the door. Especially after our 4th amendment doesn't exist anymore, HELL NO!

KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK

At this point my fiance has woken up (our bedroom door is 5 feet from our kitchen door) and I've realized it's the police, so I tell him who it is. He tells me not to answer, because we both smoke weed and have at least an ounce in the apartment. But we don't sell it or do anything else illegal. So we're both sitting on the end of the bed wondering WHY THE FUCK the cops are knocking at our door at 3am!

We sit there for a couple more minutes listening to the "police" knock and now they're shining the light a bit more aggressively in the window. It's was about 3:10 when the cops left, they were knocking for a good 10 minutes.

After they finally left, we try to figure out WHY they could have been there. At 3am of all times? WTF? I called my brother in case he got arrested or something, he was fine.

Then we thought it was kind of funny that the police were not identifying themselves. Don't cops usually announce who they are through the door while knocking? They obviously didn't have a search warrant since they left without kicking the door in. There was also no squad car outside, it was 2 officers on foot. And WHY would a cop have business with me at 3am? Why not come at 7 or 8am during daylight?

But anyway, after they left we were tweaking ourselves out by thinking that maybe it wasn't really the cops? Maybe it was some robbers? But then I remembered I heard their walkie talkie and I was trying to listen to what was being said over the radio. I heard a conversation being held over the radio, but I couldn't make out what was being said.

So then we thought it had something to do with the New World Order and that maybe they were starting to do round ups! My fiance is a convicted felon. He is off parole and has done his time. He has turned his life around and strives to do right, so don't judge. He likes to do at least one good deed a day for someone.

But I KNOW they weren't knocking because of mistaken identity or something like that. My freaking business and first and last name is stuck to my car window.

I am just a bit freaked out right now.

I had a cop knock on my door in the middle of the night, was totally freaked out when I answered the door, but he said someone has attempted to steal my car, which was parked on the street, and the perp was busted in the act. They could have been at your door to notify you something for your own good.

I would have had a gun drawn encase they weren't really cops. I am trying to decide now whether I would have opened fire if they actually broke down the door. If it were me.

My lawyer told me to NOT answer the door.
Not answer them period.
Lights out.
Give them no excuse.

That was after an intimidation visit one night where I was accused wrongly and threatened.. "If we come out here again tonight, it will be ugly".
I would call my lawyer, keep my ear to the ground and maybe start looking for another place.

You did the right thing by being quiet and keeping the lights out.

I would say it is more likely because something happened in the street and they were looking for witnesses before deciding what to do with whatever situation they were dealing with rather than new world order round ups. LOL. or something happened within or near your block and they were looking for a hiding suspect. talk to your non riff-raff neighbours and see if the cops went knocking at their places too.

If you want you should go to the station that is 3 blocks away and ask what the police wanted at 3am, say you were alone and scared it was robbers because they did not call out and identify themselves as cops. if you are polite and non hostile and seem like you are a concerned citizen they might not smash your head in.

Re: Cops knocking on my door at 3am last night
Ever since we moved into this apartment 7 months ago, we've had a constant stream of bad luck. Really shitty things constantly happening to us. I've almost started to think this apartment is cursed or something. All the negative energy from the previous riffraff that used to do God-knows-what here. Or I kind of think it's some kind of demonic oppression from my fiance's past, he was never baptised and a lot of things have happened to us and him to make me believe this... Especially since he has been doing so good lately and his life is on track, if you're demonically oppressed, they try to put you back into desperate and dire situations to get you to turn back to sin.

All this shit happening to us has been feeling like some kind of climax. Especially after last night. It's gotten to the point where I went to a church a few days ago and filled a vial with Holy Water to bless my apartment with and to clear it out. I finally got my chance to bless the apartment about an hour ago, so I'm hoping all these bad things stop.

I was talking with the maintenance guy the day before I got the Holy Water. And he was telling me ever since he has moved into this apartment (about 2-3 months before me) he has been constantly angry and negative. I told him all the negativity I had been feeling too.

And to top it off, get this: The college student here for the summer moved in 2 days ago. The NEXT day he tells me he feels too negative here and doesn't feel safe and wants his money back for the 2 months and he is willing to forfeit his security deposit. I'm the apartment manager, I just rent out the apartments, so I gave him the number to the landlord and at this point I tell him to talk directly to her.

Argh! I do feel a bit better after blessing my apartment this morning. I was going to bless the college student's apartment before I moved in, but I was way too busy. I work 2 jobs.

They were knocking at 3am which is the witching hour. That's kind of why we were tweaking out too. We've had a lot of weird things happening to us lately...

2 weeks ago I was driving my car and a piece of shrapnel fell off the back of a truck and shredded my 2 right tires. That's only 1% of all the shitty stuff that has been happening to us.

Might not, being the keywords in your post.
Rule One, Never call the Police. Never talk to the Police, you are a suspect.
Rule Two, Never answer the door, especially if you are innocent.
Rule Three, never interact with the Police period.

The rules have changed kids. This ain't your Daddy's Police force anymore. These Police are doing a job and you are just a speed bump along their way.
They will run you down.

Yes, cops identify themselves when they're acknowledged by the occupants on the otherside of the door with a, "who's there".

It was 3am... do you think they may have just been alittle considerate as to not make as noise as possible unless absolutely necessary?

Yep.

2 weeks ago, a person my fiance knows got busted by the cops. The cops were knocking on his door and he opened the door and right away the cops just pushed it open and said "Thank You" for allowing us to enter. I don't know why he got busted, I just know they walked right in as soon as he opened the door. This is after they altered the 4th amendment against unreasonable searches and seizures

Well we are definitely doing that. Our lease is up mid December. I hope we can buy a fixer-upper for like $35,000. Then we can fix it up a bit over the next year, sell it then move to Colorado or something. Illinois is such a hell-hole. I was much happier when I lived in Utah.

There was also no squad car outside, it

But I KNOW they weren't knocking because of mistaken identity or something like that. My freaking business and first and last name is stuck to my car window.

I am just a bit freaked out right now.

NEVER NEVER answer the door for the police no good can come from it . If they are knocking at three am thenit is probably an arrest warrant . If they come back it is an arrest warrant for something small , maybe an unpaid ticket , student loan excise tax whatever. I would keep all my shades drawn for a few days or at least in one room and ask your neighbors to keep an eye out for them returning during the day .
A Psalm of David. The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.

He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.

He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.

Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever. †.
