"THE LITTLE ICE AGE The last time the planet underwent an extended period of "solar minimum" was between 1645 and 1715, during which almost no sunspots were recorded. Called the Maunder Minimum, or "Little Ice Age," this period saw record snowfalls and some of the most brutal winters in history. Sleigh rides were reportedly made from Poland to Sweden over a frozen Baltic Sea, complete with rest-stops built along the way. During one harsh winter in New York City, the harbor froze over, allowing residents to walk from Manhattan to Staten Island. "This work suggests that the sun’s activity might be entering a longer period of change—a Grand Minimum, similar to that of the late 17th century," said Joanna Haigh, professor of atmospheric physics at Imperial College London.
