Amazon has gotten too big for its britches. Should they start charging sales tax?
I am from Washington State and I used to be proud that Amazon was from my state. I never liked that I had to pay sales taxes on my purchases, but that is required if you live in a state where an online retailer has a "presence." (I think Amazon has a presence in about 5 states.) But their prices are often unbeatable, so the extra 7-8 percent still makes purchases attractive.

Well, now that I own a small start-up online retail store, I am no longer enamored with Amazon. If I search Google for one of the most popular products that I sell, I will find a number of "fake" websites with questionable content that link back to Amazon, almost every time. I'm rather sick of it.

Amazon has become the bully of the internet. They charge a lot to retailers who list on their site and competitive pricing means less profit for online stores that list there. But they make up for that by selling high volumes to cost-conscious consumers.

Amazon has pulled their operations and affiliations out of states that have gone after them for revenue. People have lost jobs due to their actions to shirk tax collection.

There is a growing movement among state governments to go after tax revenue for online sales. Technically, consumers are required to pay state sales tax on purchases made from out of state retailers. But it's too difficult to collect and the out of state businesses should not be burdened with this responsibility, without compensation. Some are calling for a system that would compensate for tax collection.

Most agree that any resolution needs to come at the federal level. It's probably just a matter of time until all online purchases will include state sales tax. As someone who will be affected by this change, I welcome it. It might hurt my business, but our state governments are facing budget deficits and decreasing revenue and sorely need the help. As long as tax collection is required across the board to all online retailers, and a system that will not be too burdensome on small online merchants is implemented, I think it's an idea whose time has come. Like it or not.

You cannot tax your way to prosperity. It has never worked and it will never work.

Just don't report your cash transactions like every other small business owner (you probably already do this).

Well, as an online merchant, I don't deal in cash. Taxing online purchases will just "level the playing field." You already pay a tax when you shop at a brick and mortar store, so why not when you shop online?

I think income taxes should be eliminated and transferred to a consumption tax...that way we can control how much tax we pay by consuming less and it makes the wetbacks pay their fair share...and it eliminates the IRS

If I can get all my shopping done at just one store in a shorter amount of time, then so be it. No sense it wasting time going to a bunch of other stores.

Now if amazon doesn't offer a product I am looking for, then I'll look elsewhere. But all in all, Amazon.com usually offers better prices than most other stores, as does Walmart as well.

I think Wal-Mart is fantastic to be honest. I don't personally shop there, but I think it's nice that poor people have a place to shop without burning through their wallet.

Quit your complaining and do business out of state, you chose your business and that's the rules.

Nothing is stopping you from doing business exactly the same as they do except capital. Did you really think you could compete with the "Big Boys" on a shoe string budget if so you won't be in business long anyways!

It's called finding a niche (you know like looking for customers who want high end service instead of no service), try business 101 at the community college near you…

Actually, I am able to compete and I am poised to have an explosive year thanks to my ability to find a niche and be a risk taker. And I am fortunate to have capital to work with. I sold my land and my silver to do it, but I have an edge because I work from home, I have a huge inventory, I have superior customer service, and I'm passionate about what I do.

I just don't like bullies.

Another thing mentioned in the article I linked to is that brick and mortar stores are complaining that people go to their stores to check out products, spend maybe 30 minutes talking to a salesperson, and then they leave to buy it online for cheaper. That would piss me off to no end. I get that a little, I think. I'll get someone who calls me up, picks my brain, and then never buys anything. It's all part of business, but it sort of sleazy for someone to do that intentionally. I've felt guilty about that myself.

I didn't call you evil, but I think many on the extreme right are misguided. Taxes are not inherently evil, but people like you portray them all that way, or so it seems.

If we eliminated taxes, our country would not improve. Consumption taxes are a good thing not only as a way to provide for the services we depend on as a society, but to also reduce the gross consumption of society. As I said before, Americans are a country of pigs. I say make them put up some bacon to keep our country from completely collapsing.
