Mystery of lost Fukushima radiation emails ‘a major cover-up’
23 March, 2012

The Fukushima Prefecture government apparently deleted emails with reports on data vital to safely evacuate people from that area, according to fresh appeared revelations. But as Pepe Escobar told RT, it is unlikely Japan will investigate.

It appears that in March 2011 the Fukushima Prefecture requested the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) to send emails with the radiation data registered in the first five days after devastating tsunami.

The System for Prediction of Environmental Emergency Dose Information (SPEEDI), which was responsible for analysis, sent emails to Fukushima Prefecture government, but they have all disappeared...

This does not surprise me. The US Military has also decided to not let the service people, that were on duty during the disaster, know what levels they were exposed to. They just noted their service records for future health concerns. It doesn't matter what country, all governments seem to behave in the same manner.

Japan Turkey agree on nuclear technology transfer
Japan has reached a tentative agreement with Turkey to transfer its nuclear power technology.

Japan will be signing a first nuclear cooperation pact for the first time since the nuclear disaster at the Fukushima Daiichi plant last March.

The Foreign Ministry says that after working level meetings earlier this month, the two sides will likely sign an agreement.

If the pact goes into effect, it will lay the legal foundations for Japanese companies to supply nuclear equipment and technology to Turkey.

All Japan's reactors to be halted by early May
All of Japan's 54 nuclear reactors are to be suspended by early May, if none is restarted. Fifty-two of the reactors are currently suspended.

Of the remaining 2, one is to be halted for a regular inspection scheduled to start next Monday, and the other is to be suspended in late April through early May.

Gazprom-Japan LNG plant
Russia's state-backed gas company Gazprom will start construction of a liquefied natural gas plant in Russia's Far East in a joint project with Japan.

Japan and Russia are planning to invest more than 12 billion dollars to build the plant near Vladivostok by 2020.

The project will make it possible to export natural gas produced in Sakhalin and East Siberia to Japan.

Japan draws up plan for severe nuclear accidents
Japan's nuclear agency has compiled a basic plan on regulating power plant operators to prevent serious accidents beyond anything assumed probable.

The Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency formulated its view after consulting with scientists on preventing severe accidents. The view is to be incorporated into new safety regulations after the accident at the Fukushima Daiichi plant.

NSC's decision gets mixed responses
The Nuclear Safety Commission's endorsement of the reactor stress tests is getting a mixed response.

About 10 protesters gathered near the government building where the commission met on Friday. They objected to the restart of any nuclear reactor while the cause of the Fukushima nuclear accident remains unclear.

Some citizens who were observing the commission's meeting demanded the session be called off.

Govt. to decide on restart of Ohi reactors
Japan's Prime Minister will meet with Cabinet ministers next week to discuss the stress tests performed on 2 offline nuclear reactors, and the possibility of restarting them.

Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda and 3 Cabinet ministers concerned with nuclear issues will discuss whether the endorsement of the test results by the Nuclear Safety Commission is sufficient to obtain local government agreement on restarting the 2 reactors.

The reactors are at the Ohi nuclear plant in Fukui prefecture on the Japan Sea coast.

Japan to propose nuclear transport safety pact
Japan is to call on the United States, Britain, France and South Korea to step up cooperation in securing safe transport of nuclear fuel.

Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda will speak at the 2-day nuclear security summit, which opens Monday in Seoul, South Korea.

Japan will propose launching a working group among the 5 nations, to jointly study and develop technology associated with the movement of nuclear fuel. The group's first meeting will hopefully be held by the end of next year.

One of Japan's last 2 nuclear plants to shut down
Tokyo Electric Power Company will begin work to shut down a nuclear reactor in Niigata Prefecture, central Japan, for regular inspections.

It is the only active reactor operated by TEPCO, and one of the last 2 reactors currently operating in Japan.

TEPCO will start procedures to reduce the power output at the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa plant's NO.6 reactor on Sunday, and complete the shutdown on Monday.

The utility firm will suspend all of its 17 reactors for the first time since 2003, when it was found that the company had covered up a series of safety problems.

Minister requests debris disposal in western Japan
Environment Minister Goshi Hosono has asked the municipal government of Kitakyushu in western Japan to accept a portion of the debris from last year's disaster in northeast Japan.

Hosono made the request when he visited the city and met Mayor Kenji Kitahashi on Sunday. It is the first municipality in western Japan the minister has visited to make such a request.

Earlier this month, Kitakyushu City's assembly unanimously voted to accept debris. The city has since been studying a detailed disposal plan, including a new safety standard on radiation levels.

Prefecture expands nuclear accident zone
Local governments near nuclear power plants in Japan are becoming increasingly worried about their safety.

Shiga Prefecture has extended its preparedness zone around nuclear power plants beyond the 30-kilometer radius set by the central government.

The prefecture decided to revise its disaster prevention guidelines during a meeting on Monday with central government officials and Self-Defense Force representatives.

The new guidelines expand the accident preparedness zone to a maximum of 43 kilometers from the Tsuruga nuclear power plant in neighboring Fukui Prefecture.

Tokyo Electric Power Company has stopped the energy output from a nuclear reactor in Niigata Prefecture, central Japan, while it carries out regular inspections on Sunday.

TEPCO: Just 60cm of water in Fukushima reactor
Tokyo Electric Power Company says it has found that the cooling water in one of the damaged reactors at Fukushima is only 60 centimeters deep, far lower than previously thought.

The utility confirmed the water level by inserting an endoscope into the No.2 reactor at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant on Monday.

TEPCO had thought that the water level was about 3 meters. It has been injecting nearly 9 tons of water per hour into the reactor to cool the melted fuel that has fallen to the bottom of the containment vessel.

Tokyo Electric Power Company says about 80 liters of water contaminated with radioactive strontium has leaked into the sea off the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.

Workers found the leak in tanks at the plant site around 8:30 AM on Monday. The facilities store water after radioactive materials are removed.

The leakage stopped 20 minutes later when the workers turned the pumps off.

Noda: World should share lessons from Fukushima
Japan's Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda has called on leaders from around the world to share and pass on lessons the country learned from last year's catastrophic nuclear accident at the Fukushima Daiichi power plant.

Noda was speaking during a working lunch at the Nuclear Security Summit in Seoul, South Korea, on Tuesday.

Noda said Japan learned 3 lessons from the Fukushima accident --- the importance of imagining the unimaginable, of respecting judgments by people on-the-ground, and that security can be achieved only through constant effort.

TEPCO releases video of No. 2 reactor container
Tokyo Electric Power Company has released video footage taken in the containment vessel of one of the Fukushima plant's damaged reactors whose level of cooling water was found to be far lower than expected.

The footage released on Tuesday shows an endoscope reaching the water surface after being lowered about 6 meters along the interior wall of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant's No. 2 reactor vessel.

The utility also detected extremely high radiation of 72,900 millisieverts per hour in the first direct monitoring inside the vessel since last year's accident.
