Relatives of suicide evacuee sue TEPCO
The family of a woman who committed suicide following the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant accident, has filed a lawsuit. They are seeking over one million dollars in damages from the Tokyo Electric Power Company.

The nuclear power plant operator says this is the first such lawsuit seeking damages of this kind.

Japan helps dismantle Russian nuclear submarines
Japan has given machinery and equipment to Russia to help that country store nuclear reactors from dismantled nuclear submarines of the former Soviet military.

The Japanese government delivered a floating dock and construction cranes worth around 52 million dollars at a ceremony held on Friday near Vladivostok, Russia's main Far Eastern city.

About 50 decommissioned nuclear submarines have lain in coastal areas of Russia's Far East since the collapse of the Soviet Union, raising concern about leakage of radioactive materials.

Nuclear watchdog pressured on nuclear safety
Japan's industry ministry was found to have pressed the Nuclear Safety Commission to present a view that old nuclear power plants posed no safety risks in spite of stronger earthquake-resistance guidelines.

Six years ago, the commission made its earthquake-resistance guidelines for nuclear power plants more stringent.

On that occasion, the ministry's Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency asked the commission to present a view that the existing nuclear plants built under old guidelines have no problems with earthquake-resistance.

Ex-PM Kan to testify May 28 at Diet panel investigating Fukushima crisis
Former Prime Minister Naoto Kan will testify on May 28 at a Diet-appointed panel investigating the Fukushima nuclear crisis, the investigation commission said Friday.

Kan led the government when the disaster at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant, operated by Tokyo Electric Power Co., was triggered by the deadly earthquake and tsunami on March 11 last year.

Current average reading in Vancouver Canada

is

.154 uSv/hr

based on 3,789 1 hr long samples, comprised of 1 min samples.

high spikes up to .254 usv/hr still pop up several times a day.

low dose radiation exposure causes cancer, period.

My grandmother was part of a joint Japanese, American, Canadian,... study on the medical and caregiver survivors of Hiroshima. In her group all members except her died of Cancer by 1986. She has had it twice. shes 97 and alive so this is not second hand.

this was mostly second hand exposure from caring for other survivors... contact exposure.

just for kicks... get the charts showing the rise of lung cancer attributed to smoking and the charts showing Nuclear tests... overly the spikes .... and ... just an interesting challenge for the brain

did I read something wrong or did one of those article say belrus evac at .141 uSv/hr constant???

Radiation can do that. Readings here in central Mexico, near Toluca, measure about 1/10th those readings on the average. You ever think about going on a vacation, or are you pinned down by things?

No, i am a true Melange!

About the black Substance:

Minami Soma's "Black Dust" with Over 10 Million Bq/kg of Radioactive Cesium, Says Assemblyman Ooyama (Just Don't Multiply by 65!)
He keeps finding "black dust" in his city with ever higher radioactivity. That's extremely high, even though Mr. Ooyama hasn't given the details as to the exact measurement or the location in his blog post.

But one thing the readers had better keep in mind: YOU DO NOT MULTIPLY THIS NUMBER BY 65 TO CONVERT TO BQ/M2.

As I said in the previous post on Tokyo's "black dust", the multiplier of 65 is only applicable if:

The soil sample is taken from the surface to 5 centimeter deep; and

The soil's relative density is about 1.3 gram/cm3 (cubic centimeter).

In case of the samples that Mr. Ooyama has been collecting,

The samples are taken from the surface, as in most cases the "black dust" is scattered on the paved road; and

The soil's density is extremely light, 0.45 gram/cm3.

By automatically multiplying the Bq/kg numbers for Minami Soma's samples by 65 (or worse, 150), you would be grossly exaggerating the Bq/m2 numbers.

ha, as if fools would trust the government to the reproductive qualities of their children, waiting for them to tell them to evacuate, rather than choosing to do it before the masses do.

But then .015uSv/h is normal background for central Mexico at this time, and it was the norm I presume for Vancouver, Japan, and most places in the world a few years ago.

What fools wish to expose their children to is a personal matter. If you are not a parent and don't wish to be it may not matter much.

Yeah, but this is the first time in history that living in parts of Canada and the US has meant ten times previous normal background levels, and 100 times in parts of Japan. It's never been like that before outside of some very isolated areas.

Ten times won't kill most people obviously, but it is not anything that any rational person would want to expose their children to.

The world is truly treading in unknown territory here, and I would guess at these levels that the infertility, deformities and early deaths will take enough time to unfold as to fool most of the people into complacency.

TEPCO Tries To Alleviate Fears Of Unit 4

May 19th, 2012 | Add a Comment
[Translate]

TEPCO is planning another press tour of Fukushima Daiichi and has released another hand out claiming it explains the status of unit 4.

While the hand out has more information than some of their other public statements on unit 4 it is still lacking. As TEPCO slowly releases small bits of information it becomes clear they are holding back information from the public. In the report TEPCO admits they have done survey work on the building. TEPCO frames it as being only work to see if the building is tilted as a whole. No actual data is included. More involved survey work would be needed to begin adding the fuel removal building. There is clearly considerable data on the building in TEPCO (or their contractors) possession. They need to release it to the public.

The hand out also discusses cracks in the building. It claims any crack over 1mm on visual inspection would be further investigated for rebar corrosion. TEPCO still refuses to make any statements about the status or even existence of the long diagonal crack in the facade of unit 4.

My computer time has been limited since we only have 1 in the house. Since I always say education is #1 I have had to give up most of my evening hours for research. Pretty proud of her though...her english paper is on Special Education and alternative ways of communication with non verbal students. This paper is a big deal for graduating seniors, they must pass with a C or they will not graduate. It is part research paper, part community service, and part presentation. They spend the whole year on it...meaning crunch time the last few weeks of school.

Slow and insidious.
The evidence is mounting, that's for sure.
If the world was pristine it would be obvious.
With multiple contamination x factors melding,
it's hard to pinpoint any single cause and effect.

We've managed to make a real mess of it.
