Novelist Oe submits anti-nuclear petition to govt.
Nobel Prize-winning Japanese novelist Kenzaburo Oe has asked Japan's government to end its policy of dependence on nuclear power.

Oe and 3 others handed an anti-nuclear power petition to Chief Cabinet Secretary Osamu Fujimura in Tokyo on Friday. The petition was signed by nearly 6.5 million people across the country.

Oe told Fujimura that he opposes the government's plan to allow a restart of the Ohi nuclear plant in Fukui Prefecture, western Japan.

Iran nuclear talks will begin in Moscow
Talks on Iran's nuclear program will begin on Monday in the Russian capital, Moscow. It's the third round of talks since April when the negotiations resumed.

Taking part are negotiators from the "group of six" -- the United States, Russia, China, Britain, France and Germany. EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton and Iran's top nuclear negotiator Saeed Jalili will also join the discussions.

The two sides remain far apart in their positions. The six countries are demanding that Iran halt its 20-percent enrichment program, which they say can lead to nuclear arms development.

Japan failed to use U.S. radiation data gathered after nuke crisis
The Japanese government failed to make use of maps showing the spread of radiation in the immediate aftermath of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant disaster, prepared by the U.S. government using data collected by U.S. aircraft, sources familiar with the matter said Monday.

The sources said the maps were neither made public nor used for evacuation of residents near the Tokyo Electric Power Co. nuclear plant devastated by explosions in the days after a massive earthquake and tsunami struck the area on March 11, 2011.

From March 17 to 19, U.S. military aircraft collect radiation data over a radius of 45 kilometers from the plant for the U.S. Department of Energy. The data showed more than 125 microsieverts of radiation per hour being spread about 25 km northwest of the plant, meaning people in the area were being exposed to the annual permissible level within eight hours.

Radiation survey halted at request of Fukushima gov't: researchers
A survey on local residents' exposure to radioactive iodine was abruptly halted at the request of the Fukushima prefectural government just weeks after the nuclear crisis was triggered by the March 2011 earthquake-tsunami disaster, a team of researchers said Thursday.

The team led by Shinji Tokonami, a professor at Hirosaki University's Institute of Radiation Emergency Medicine, began the survey in April last year but ended it after the prefectural government told the researchers that such studies might fuel concern among residents.

Govt to review its withholding of radiation maps
Science minister Hirofumi Hirano says the government will review its decision last year not to disclose radiation maps provided by the United States.

The US government drew up maps based on aerial surveys immediately after the accident at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant. The documents show high levels of radiation in areas to the northwest of the power station.

It provided the maps to Japan on March 18th and 20th last year, but the science ministry and the nuclear safety agency decided not to make them public.

Japan officials failed to use US data on spread of Fukushima radiation

Japanese authorities failed to disclose U.S. data about the spread of radiation from a crippled nuclear plant last year, leaving some evacuees fleeing in the same direction as the emissions, according to several media sources.

News that Japan’s nuclear watchdog and the science and technology ministry sat on the information collected by U.S. military aircraft -- another sign of the chaos at the time — is likely to add to mistrust of nuclear power just days after the government approved the restart of two idled reactors.

Japanese Industry Minister Yukio Edano apologized Tuesday for the nation’s failure to make use of the data, according to the Asahi Shimbun newspaper.

“It is extremely regrettable that [the information] was not used by the government,” Edano was quoted as saying. “I apologize to the people who were affected.”

On March 11, 2011, an earthquake and tsunami devastated the Fukushima nuclear plant north of Tokyo, triggering explosions and meltdowns and causing about 160,000 people to flee the worst nuclear accident since Chernobyl in 1986.

U.S. aircraft — reports differed on whether they were operated by the military or Department of Energy — gathered radiation data from March 17-19 within a 28-mile radius and found that people in an area about 15 miles northwest of the plant were exposed to the annual permissible level of radiation within eight hours, Japanese media said.

A registry created by the Pentagon to gauge U.S. citizens exposure to radiation is set to go online in July after months of delays.

U.S. troops wore dosimeters during relief efforts around the disaster zone, and the U.S. took soil and air samples, though no data has been released, despite repeated requests.
