Thread: Cooling system for Fukushima Daiichi No. 4 reactor suspended

Of course Reactor 4 is not SFP4. So some stories say that reactor 4 is not loaded, or perhaps not fully loaded.

We know that it's cap was off at the time of the explosion.

Sounds like controversy of opinions on that.

What do you all think?

Ohi nuclear plant to go back line on Sunday
One of the reactors at the Ohi nuclear power plant in central Japan on Sunday will go back online.

It will be the first to do so since reactors went offline due to safety concerns after the Fukushima accident last year.

The company plans to start lifting control rods in the No.3 reactor at 9:00 PM in the presence of senior vice industry minister Seishu Makino and Ohi Town Mayor Shinobu Tokioka.

The reactor is expected to reach criticality, starting a self-sustaining chain reaction, early on Monday.

The utility says the reactor will start generating power on Wednesday, and begin operating at full capacity 4 days later.

Antinuclear protesters block road to Oi plant ahead of restart
A group of about 100 antinuclar protesters on Saturday blocked a road outside the front gate of the Oi nuclear plant in western Japan, ahead of the planned reactivation of a reactor there on Sunday.

The protesters, part of 650 people who took part in a rally against the reactivation, sought to block the entrance to the plant in Fukui Prefecture with more than a dozen vehicles in an attempt to prevent workers from entering the facility.

The group is set to remain at the site until Sunday night when the process of reactivating the No.3 reactor is scheduled to begin. The plant operator, Kansai Electric Co., said the protest will not affect the reactivation process.

1st Japan reactor goes online since nuclear crisis

Dozens of protesters shouted and danced at the gate of a nuclear power plant set to restart Sunday, the first to go back online since all of Japan’s reactors were shut down for safety checks following the Fukushima nuclear disaster.

Ohi nuclear plant’s reactor No. 3 is returning to operation despite a deep divide in public opinion. Last month, Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda ordered the restarts of reactors No. 3 and nearby No. 4, saying people’s living standards can’t be maintained without nuclear energy. Many citizens are against a return to nuclear power because of safety fears after Fukushima.

Crowds of tens of thousands of people have gathered on Friday evenings around Noda’s official residence, chanting, “Saikado hantai,” or “No to nuclear restarts.” Protests drawing such numbers are extremely rare in this nation, reputed for orderly docility and conformity. A demonstration in Tokyo protesting the restart and demanding Noda resign was being organized in a major park Sunday.
.
.
.
Fukushima Dai-ichi, in northeastern Japan, went into meltdowns and exploded after the March 11 tsunami destroyed backup generators to keep reactor cores cool.

In the latest problem at the crippled plant, Tokyo Electric Power Co., its operator, said it was still working to restore the cooling system for the pool for spent nuclear fuel at reactor No. 4, which broke down Saturday.

The cooling system must be restored within 70 hours, or temperatures will start to rise, spewing radiation. TEPCO spokesman Naohiro Omura said a temporary system was being set up Sunday.

The pool contains 1,535 fuel rods, 204 of them unused ones. Even spent fuel remains highly radioactive. The government has acknowledged that the spent fuel pool, if it cannot be kept cool, will cause a massive radiation leak that may require the evacuation of the Tokyo area.

Adding to the jitters are cracks and warping of the building that houses the pool, likely because of the damage from last year’s explosions, according to TEPCO. The utility, which is undergoing a massive government bailout, denies there is any danger and says radiation is being closely monitored

Oi reactor restarted, 1st reactivation since Fukushima accident
A reactor at the Oi nuclear power plant in western Japan became late Sunday the first in the country to be reactivated after regular checks since last year's Fukushima nuclear crisis, bringing an end to the halt since early May of Japan's nuclear reactors and easing power constraints.

In reactivating the reactor, the plant's operator, Kansai Electric Power Co., pulled out control rods from around 9 p.m. that have contained fission reactions at the No. 3 reactor at the plant in Fukui Prefecture on the Sea of Japan coast.

TEPCO resumes cooling Fukushima Daiichi No. 4 reactor fuel pool
Tokyo Electric Power Co. said Sunday it has resumed cooling the spent fuel pool of the crippled Fukushima Daiichi power plant's No. 4 reactor following emergency repair work after the cooling system shut down on Saturday.

The water temperature of the pool had risen to 42.9 C when the utility known as TEPCO turned the cooling system back on shortly after 3 p.m., compared with 33.3 C at the time of the shutdown on Saturday morning.

wow...

For a Cold Shut down the temp sure went up fast...

Still monitoring in Van. B.C.

average is still around .141-3uSv/hr here based on several thousand hours of data gathered through 60 second readings,
had a spike yesterday of .245 uSv/hr., and a low of .05 uSv/hr.

Apparently the background here used to be in the .04-.06 range. But can't find a Radiation tech. at a hospital here that actually knows what the yearly levels are for exposure and what background levels are...

... am I missing something here?... and they work with radiation... they get confused when I ask them....????

3 Major hospitals in Vancouver's Radiology Units...

If there was an accident... they would not have a clue about what to do...
hell ... they didn't even know their own limits for the work they do... Yikes.

I Tech. had his dose meter way under his protective vest. Two had them on the counter.

One put my blood covered pulse monitor back in the rack... without cleaning the blood of.... isssh. biggest hospital in Vancouver. Watched another pick up the needle they dropped and then use it on a patient... but the person did watch them do it and let them use it anyway...

Is it just me or are there a lot of nasty chest colds around...

Still have not had any fish we bought show any difference from background readings. Salmon and Tuna.

So far...

Thanks for the continuing good work on both sides of the fence from those who make the effort...

Again
... the Japanese , American, and Canadian Gov's all have studies showing the dangers of and from continued exposure to low level radiation
... they are hiding them...

My grandmother to this day is still part of this study... she's 98

Turbine problem idles one reactor at Point Beach nuclear plant
One of Wisconsin’s three nuclear reactors stopped operating Wednesday night after a problem developed with the plant’s turbine.

The problem occurred shortly before 9 p.m., according to a report NextEra Energy Services filed with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

The problem took place on the non-nuclear side of the plant and did not pose any safety risks, the company said. NextEra told the NRC that it shut down the reactor and that all safety-related equipment to cool the nuclear reactor operated without problems.

Japan opens solar energy parks
Japan opened several solar energy parks on Sunday as a new law came into force requiring companies to purchase renewable energy at a fixed price in a push for alternatives to nuclear power.

A new solar centre opened in Kyoto in western Japan, while various municipalities also started up installations able to provide energy for hundreds of thousands of households.

Japanese telecommunications Softbank chief Masayoshi Son, opposed to nuclear energy since a powerful earthquake and tsunami last year that crippled reactor cooling systems, said the company had plans for 11 solar or windpower centres in Japan.

High level of radioactive cesium detected in Fukushima freshwater fish
The Environment Ministry said Monday it detected 61 to 2,600 becquerels per kilogram of radioactive cesium in 23 varieties of freshwater fish sampled at five rivers and lakes in Fukushima Prefecture between December and February.

After the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant crisis, the government reduced the level of radioactive cesium deemed safe for consumption to a maximum of 100 Bq/kg for fish, meat and other food items.

Candu studying feasibility of building reactors in the U.K.
MISSISSAUGA, Ont. — Candu Energy Inc. says it’s working with the U.K.’s Nuclear Decommissioning Authority to study the feasibility of building new reactors there that will use the spent fuel from country’s existing reactors.

Candu, a subsidiary of SNC-Lavalin, says the study could open the door to talks with the UK regulator about licensing its EC6 technology.

In a release, the company says the U.K. wants to re-use the plutonium from the spent fuel as mixed oxide fuel (MOX).

Ohi No.3 reactor power generation postponed
The operator of the Ohi nuclear plant in Fukui Prefecture has decided to postpone by at least one day the start of power generation at the facility's Number 3 reactor.

Kansai Electric Power Company restarted the reactor for the first time in 15 months on Sunday night. It reached criticality on Monday morning.

On Tuesday, the utility began adjusting a turbine so that the reactor could start generating power on Wednesday. But as the procedure took more time than expected, power generation was put off until at least Thursday.

TEPCO has announced they will send robots into unit 1′s TIPS room. A previous set of radiation readings from October 2011 showed very high readings near the TIPS room of between 1-4 sV/h. TEPCO plans to use a set of robots to open the TIPS room door. The actual door opening was done by a human worker in the other units. The worker would run in, open the door and leave the building quickly. Due to the extremely high radiation at unit 1 TEPCO will attempt to open the door using only the robots.
