Fugutive nuke operator described as “dangerous and evil”

Michael Buhrman, the infamous former licensed senior nuclear reactor operator turned fugitive who is believed to have fled the country to evade capture by authorities, was convicted last month of aggravated vehicular hijacking and vehicular hijacking and sentenced to 40 years in prison.  It took the DuPage County jury less than an hour to reach a guilty felony verdict.

“Nearly one year ago, Michael Buhrman pointed a loaded weapon at an innocent woman’s head and stole her car just for the thrill of it,” State’s Attorney Robert Berlin said after the verdict.

TEPCO Withholds “Black Box” Data About Fukushima Nuclear Disaster

May 13th, 2013 | 1 Comment
[Translate]

In April of 2010 TEPCO signed a contract with high tech security company Magna BSP to provide a sophisticated video and trespass detection system at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant. This was the first installation of what was to be a series of similar installations at nuclear plants around Japan, coordinated between the government and nuclear operators. The system was installed at Fukushima Daiichi in 2010

Two TEPCO workers who were trained on the system weeks before the disaster were confirmed to have been among the Fukushima 50 who stayed at the plant during the worst of the disaster. To date TEPCO has not acknowledged the existence of the system or volunteered any of the video and data captured by the system to the public or the press. This data was never taken into account by any of the investigations into the disaster that commenced in 2011 and 2012.

This system holds critical data that could shed light on many of the early events at the plant. It should be made public in an unedited and usable format asap.

I remember that theory being sent around at the beginning. Not sure how I feel about that one. Seems more like a natural disaster combined with incompetence to me. I do wonder if there was a security system though. Never thought about that before.

I really doubt that the Security System was working in the
first 48 Hours after the Quake!

In the early days there was a Report from the System Administrator that they flow him with a Helicopter
to the Plant, afir 48 Hours later!

I will dig a bit in my old HDD, somewhere it must be hidden!

Monitoring of atmospheric radionuclides from the Fukushima nuclear accident and assessing their impact on Xi’an, China
Aerosol radionuclides (131I, 134Cs, 137Cs) and gaseous radioactive xenon (133Xe) were monitored at Xi’an, China following the accident at the Fukushima nuclear power plant in March 2011. The additional annual effective dose attributable to the Fukushima emissions was much lower than the public annual effective dose from natural radiation, according to Chinese national standards.

The monitoring results were compared with data from other countries as well as with the radionuclide concentrations observed in Xi’an after the Chernobyl nuclear accident in 1986. Possible transport pathways of the released radionuclides from Fukushima to Xi’an were investigated. The occurrence of an anticyclone in the Pacific Ocean region and the extended period over which the radionuclides were released made the determination transport pathways complex, but divergence in the plume and easterly flow evidently brought the initial suite of radionuclides to Xi’an.

So effectively they lied as much as TEPCO or they shipped it all off to the West US on the wind and water currents already plotted... HAPPY DAYS! BE PROUD TEPCO!

I don't see the US sailors who had to scrub down the deck of their Aircraft carrier being happy....

Maybe that's why China wants a few Islands back?.. you know; keep an eye on your lying overlords.....

Also with a open Access:

Impacts of the Fukushima nuclear accident on the China Seas: Evaluation based on anthropogenic radionuclide 137Cs
In order to evaluate the impact of the Fukushima nuclear accident on the China Seas, seawater samples from the South China Sea (SCS), the East China Sea (ECS) and the Yellow Sea (YS) were collected in April–June 2011, and their 137Cs activities were measured using low-background γ-spectrometry. 137Cs activities in the study area ranged from 0.75±0.07 to 1.43±0.08 Bq m−3 with an average of 1.12±0.08 Bq m−3. 137Cs activities initially increased from the nearshore to the inner shelf, and subsequently decreased from the inner shelf to the outer shelf. V

Vertical profiles showed higher 137Cs activities at the surface but lower activities at depth in the ECS, suggesting atmospheric input of 137Cs. As such, the distribution pattern of 137Cs in the region was presumably determined by a combination of atmospheric deposition and subsequent mixing between different water masses including the coastal currents, the Yangtze River plume and the Taiwan Warm Currents.

Based on the inventory of 93 Bq m−2 and the atmospheric deposition flux of 137Cs in the ECS of 32.2 mBq m−2 d−1 (5.4–42.9 mBq m−2 d−1) which we estimated, we derived the residence time of 137Cs in the upper water column to be 66 d (45–95 d). We concluded that in terms of 137Cs, the ECS was less impacted by the Fukushima accident as compared to the Chernobyl accident. The released amount of 137Cs into the ECS from the Fukushima accident was minute.

Head of operator of Monju reactor to resign

The head of the operator of a prototype fast-breeder reactor in central Japan has resigned over missed safety checkups.

Science and technology minister Hakubun Shimomura told reporters on Friday that Japan Atomic Energy Agency President Atsuyuki Suzuki has resigned.

A government inspection last year found more than 9,800 missed checkups for equipment at the Monju reactor in Fukui Prefecture.

Shimomura said the operator's oversight was a breach of public trust, and he discussed the issue with Suzuki on Thursday. He said Suzuki later called the ministry and offered to resign.

Dilemma...

US anxious to sell nuclear technology to Vietnam

The US government has dispatched a senior White House official and members of the domestic nuclear power industry to Vietnam with the aim of exporting its technology.

Under Secretary of Commerce Francisco Sanchez and representatives of the private sector took part in a nuclear power-related seminar held in Hanoi on Friday to brief participants on what the US has to offer.

Sanchez called on Vietnamese officials to consider adopting US nuclear power technology by saying the civil nuclear industry is one area with great potential in which the two countries can deepen cooperation.

The US government sees Vietnam as a promising market for nuclear power reactors due to its acute electricity shortage.

It expects Vietnam's nuclear power industry to be a 50 billion dollar market by 2030.

Little progress in Fukushima radiation cleanup

An NHK survey has found that little progress is being made to clean up radioactive material in areas near the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.

Work is underway in 47 municipalities in Fukushima Prefecture. The national government is in charge of restricted areas near the plant. Municipalities take charge of outer areas.

The government has carried out cleanup in around 4 percent of the land in the restricted areas.

Municipalities have cleaned up nearly 5 percent of houses that need to be decontaminated.

NHK also analyzed data for 21 municipalities and found that the cleanup does not necessarily lower radiation levels.

The data shows that radiation levels have not fallen to the government-set standard of one millisievert per year on 77 percent of the land.

This can go on for decades without any significant progess...

Reasons for slow progress of decontamination

Workers use water to wash houses and roads and remove surface soil from gardens by hand.

Local authorities say the work by hand takes a lot of time and workers often have to suspend their activities due to weather, like heavy snow in winter.

Sometimes the authorities cannot contact owners of houses that have been evacuated.

Local governments have difficulty in finding temporary storage sites for soil they have removed, and other contaminated materials.

Officials and experts say radioactive material gets into extremely small gaps in asphalt or roofs, making it difficult to completely remove it by washing or wiping.

Power output from Oi nuclear reactor reduced for cleaning

Kansai Electric Power Co. on Friday temporarily reduced the power output from one of the country's only two running nuclear reactors to 80 percent for a week of cleaning.

The company said it plans to put the No. 3 reactor of its Oi nuclear plant on the Sea of Japan coast in Fukui Prefecture back into full service after cleaning tubules inside the 1.18 million kilowatt reactor's steam condenser in a week.

The condenser uses seawater to cool down the steam used to generate electricity and turns it back into water, but the quantity of seawater intake has fallen since around the end of last year due to the possibility that things such as shells may be stuck in the tubules, according to Kansai Electric.
