Iran's heavy-water reactor nearly completed

The head of Iran's Atomic Energy Organization suggests the construction of a heavy-water nuclear reactor is nearly finished.

Iran's state-run media reported on Sunday Fereydoun Abbasi visited the western Iranian city of Arak on Sunday with President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Abbasi said the workers at the reactor made significant progress installing the container of the reactor during their visit. He added that they will conduct tests at the reactor ahead of the start of its operation next year.

Heavy-water nuclear reactors enable the easier extraction of plutonium that can be used for nuclear weapons from spent nuclear fuel. The UN Security Council has demanded Iran refrain from such activity.

Decontamination at schools almost completed

A Japanese Environment Ministry survey has revealed that almost all of the designated municipalities in eastern Japan had completed decontamination of schools by the end of March. The decontamination was conducted using government money.

The survey investigated 58 municipalities in eastern Japan. The survey did not include municipalities in Fukushima Prefecture.

The ministry examined the progress of decontamination at educational facilities such as schools, kindergartens, and nursery schools.

Of the 1,587 facilities to be decontaminated, the survey found 98 percent, or 1,555 had been completed.

Rice planted in decontaminated paddy in Nagadoro

People in a village in Fukushima Prefecture have planted rice seedlings in a decontaminated paddy to see if they can resume commercial farming there.

The test planting took place in a 500-square-meter paddy in the Nagadoro District of Iitate Village on Monday.

Nagadoro is the only district in the village listed as uninhabitable for the next 5 years by the central government. Radiation readings top 50 millisieverts per year.

Families of deceased hospital patients sue TEPCO

The families of hospital patients who died in the confusion of the evacuation from the Fukushima nuclear plant accident have filed a joint lawsuit against the plant operator, Tokyo Electric Power Company.

The lawsuit is being brought by the families of 4 people who were in Futaba Hospital and an adjacent nursing home in Okuma town at the time of the accident. The facilities are about 4 kilometers from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant, and within the evacuation zone.

They are demanding about 300,000 dollars each in damages.

Abe to step up nuclear technology export drive

TOKYO — Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is expected to sign a nuclear cooperation deal with the Czech Republic this month, as Tokyo looks to build up its exports of the technology.

Abe and Czech President Milos Zeman have all but agreed to sign a memorandum of understanding on mutual nuclear technology cooperation when they meet in Poland on June 16, according to a Nikkei business daily report.

It will also make U.S. nuclear plant builder Westinghouse Electric, a unit of Japan’s Toshiba Corp, the top candidate to win a $10 billion contract to build two nuclear reactors in the Central European country, the daily said.

Japan eyes earlier start of melted fuel removal at Fukushima plant

The government and Tokyo Electric Power Co. said Monday they may be able to start removing the melted fuel inside the crippled nuclear reactors at the Fukushima Daiichi complex within the first half of fiscal 2020 by improving work efficiency, around 18 months earlier than initially planned.

The schedule was included in a draft version of a revised road map toward decommissioning the Nos. 1 to 4 reactors at the plant, but prospects are unclear because technology must be developed to perform the work.

The fuel inside the Nos. 1 to 3 units is believed to have melted through the reactor pressure vessels and been accumulating in the outer primary containers, making the task of defueling more challenging than in the case of the 1979 Three Mile Island accident in the United States.

Fukui gov. wants SDF troops deployed to sites with nuclear reactors

Fukui Gov. Issei Nishikawa asked the Defense Ministry on Monday to permanently deploy Japanese Self-Defense Forces troops to areas in Fukui Prefecture, home to the largest number of nuclear reactors in Japan.

Nishikawa asked Defense Minister Itsunori Onodera at the ministry's headquarters in Tokyo to have Ground Self-Defense Force and Maritime Self-Defense Force personnel stationed in Fukui to brace for a possible nuclear disaster or terrorist attack on nuclear power plants, according to prefectural officials.

Fourteen nuclear reactors are located in Fukui.

Nothing new, just to keep it going...

Time is of the essence at Hanford site | As It Turns Out

The Hanford Nuclear Reservation, along the Columbia River in Benton County, was built in our own back yard in 1943 to produce plutonium as part of the top-secret Manhattan Project.

Hanford’s 56 million gallons of the most contaminated nuclear waste in the western hemisphere is a true horror story.

There are 177 storage tanks holding this waste; 149 of these are older single-shell carbon steel tanks, some there since the 1940s. Many have a life span of merely 20 years. There is no surprise that tanks are decaying.

8,900 Rad Per Hour...

CLARIFICATION: DOE States Hanford 8,900 Rad Per Hour Soil Discovery Did Not Impact Workers, Water, Air, But Radioactive Rabbit Killed, Mouse Hunt Underway

YAKIMA, Wash. (HNN) – A rabbit and a rodent appear to have acquired contamination possibly from a site at or near the 327 Building where hot cells have been previously pulled and contaminated soil found. A radioactive rabbit has been caught north of Richland and workers have set traps for a radioactive mouse. The search comes after radioactive rabbit and mouse droppings were found in a section of the site not open to the public.

According to an Associated Press report, Hanford workers checked 18 rabbits which had been trapped or shot with pellet guns. The contaminated rabbit was killed and disposed of as radioactive waste, Oregonlive.com reported.

As of a November 18, 2010 report, suspicions rested on the animals drinking a common source of radioactive cesium or that a mouse wandered through the radioactive rabbit’s droppings.

Pertaining to an earlier story on HNN related to Hanford and the gaseous diffusion plants, the Department of Energy asked HNN to clarify a statement. The story told of the finding 8,900 rad per hour soil beneath the 324 Building. Although this is ten times the lethal limit on contact, spokesman Nelson emphasized that because the soil sits under a building the workers are shielded from the radiation and the radiation was not released into the air. Workers and air toxicity are two of the three biggest concerns, the final one is migration to groundwater, Nelson said.

U.S. orders new safety upgrades at nuclear plants

Washington (CNN) -- U.S. regulators are directing 31 nuclear reactors similar in design to the Fukushima Daiichi plant in Japan, where an earthquake and tsunami caused a meltdown two years ago, to take additional steps to help contain radiation and other damage from any accident that is not quickly halted.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission directive on Thursday requires enhancements to systems for venting accumulated pressure from containment structures during an emergency. Vents must also be able to safely handle rising temperatures, hydrogen concentrations and radiation levels.

U.S. plants covered under the directive are older, boiling-water reactors mainly similar in design to the Fukushima facility. [link to edition.cnn.com]

The new order also includes MarkII reactors...

"The agency’s Order today supersedes a March 2012 Order for the 31 reactors with “Mark I” and “Mark II” containments to install or improve their “hardened” venting systems. The enhanced Order requires the vents to handle the pressures, temperatures, hydrogen concentrations and radiation levels from a damaged reactor. The enhancements also ensure plant personnel can operate the vents safely if the reactor core is damaged."

Fairewinds: Radiation levels actually rising in Fukushima — Started going up again last fall

At 33:00 in

Nathaniel White-Joyal, Host: It’s clear that the west coast of the United States will be affected by the radiation from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant.

Akio Matsumura, Diplomat: Let me clarify. We are facing global disaster — catastrophe — occurring. From that perspective, over 40 years, 50 years, or maybe 100 years. We cannot escape from this fact. For that we have to keep in mind. […] This radioactive material, or contaminated water, any cases, reach out to your west coast as well. If you are counting on Japan, I can assure you now they do not take serious action.

It’s in the first couple of inches of dust, and when the wind blows it moves into areas that have been previously cleaned. […] This will go on for decades, as the cesium goes down in to the soil, the roots bring it back up and into the plant structures and the leaves fall on the ground and the cycle continues.

What "a Friend" (Uncle?) of Chiho-Kun detected is more than questionable,
no Information about the Measurement and how it was done!

I think everyone with a GC know where he need to look for "Above the Average" Detection!

And i think A. Gundershill, who lives very well from his Fearmongering,

Fairewinds: Radiation levels actually rising in Fukushima — Started going up again last fall

Fairewinds board member Chiho Kaneko: Somebody I know from [Koriyama-area, Fukushima] has a Geiger counter and this person said that the radiation level has gone up actually, even after 1 year. Let’s say last fall, maybe radiation level start to go up again. How do you explain that? […]
