Yokohama City announced on February 9 that 2,077 becquerels/kg of radioactive cesium was detected from dried mushrooms sold at a supermarket in Kohoku-ku in the city. The provisional safety limit is 500 becquerels/kg. 7 packets have already been sold. The city notified Shizuoka Prefecture where the packaging company is located, and ordered the supermarket to recall the packets.

US approves 1st reactor project in 34 years
US nuclear regulators have approved construction of nuclear power reactors in the country for the first time in 34 years.

The 5-member Nuclear Regulatory Commission voted 4 to 1 on Thursday to approve a plan to build 2 reactors at the Vogtle plant in the southern state of Georgia.

Commission Chairman Gregory Jaczko cast the dissenting vote, citing safety concerns.

The reactors, called Unit 3 and Unit 4, were designed by Westinghouse Electric, which is majority-owned by Japanese electronics maker Toshiba.
Construction could begin this year. If all goes well, the reactors are expected to start operation in 2016.

Worker checks urged to prevent nuclear terrorism
Japan's Atomic Energy Commission has for the first time laid out its measures to prevent possible terrorist attacks on nuclear power plants.

A working group at the state agency has compiled a report on enhancing safety at the country's nuclear plants.

The report calls for insisting that power companies check personal information, such as the criminal and financial records, of all plant employees.

TEPCO says no damage to spent fuel at Fukushima
The operator of the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant says it has found no damage to spent fuel rods that will be the first to be removed from the plant's reactors.

Tokyo Electric Power Company on Friday released video of the storage pool at the No.4 reactor building taken by an underwater camera the previous day.

The utility says the footage shows debris fell onto the rack containing the fuel rods but apparently caused no damage. Visibility in the pool is reportedly about 5 meters.

New Containment Flaw Identified in the BWR Mark 1

(snip)

Fairewinds shows that the nuclear industry’s plan to vent the containment at Fukushima Daiichi could not have prevented a containment failure and the ensuing explosions. Look at the graphics from the containment stress tests conducted more than 40 years ago at a US nuclear reactor identical to Fukushima Daiichi Unit 1. This video and its graphics provide important clues about why Fukushima Daiichi Unit 1 exploded.

Arnie's analysis of the top of containment releasing pressure because the bolts stretched at 100psi gives more impetus and urgency to the notion of shutting down these Mark I generation reactors down permanently.

Japan Starts Nuclear Cleanup, With Little Idea of How

(snip)

“It’s a scam,” said Kiyoshi Sakurai, a critic of the nuclear industry and a former researcher at a forerunner to the Japan Atomic Energy Agency, which is overseeing this phase of the decontamination effort. “Decontamination is becoming big business.”

The cleanup contracts, Mr. Sakurai and other critics contend, are emblematic of the too-cozy ties they say have long existed between the nuclear industry and government.

“The Japanese nuclear industry is run so that the more you fail, the more money you receive,” Mr. Sakurai said.

Nuclear Damage Control (Fukushima)

(snip)

After the partial meltdown at Three Mile Island in central Pennsylvania in March 1979 and the explosion of Chernobyl’s unit four reactor in the Ukraine in April 1986, few would have predicted that nuclear power could ever shake off its global pariah status.

In response, the nuclear industry and its supporters have employed sophisticated press manipulation to move the public conversation away from these thorny issues.

An overhaul of the Japanese nuclear regulatory system has begun. If the U.S. doesn’t take similar action, without a domestic disaster comparable to Fukushima, it’s hard to see how nuclear power can survive here — or to justify why it should.

Watched a documentary on the three greatest nuclear disasters of our time, Three Mile Island, Chernobyl, and Fukushima. It was one of the best ones I've ever seen. Scientists and concerned individuals did extensive research on the first two accidents and they came to some startling conclusions! The regulatory agencies in charge of these facilities all LIED! The governments of the nations where these facilities were located all LIED! The companies that built and operated these facilities all LIED! Radiation has spread all over the world from these accidents and are affecting every living thing, causing mutations, diseases, and deaths, and will be for many many years! Fukushima had three reactors that went into meltdown and exploded, releasing all sorts of radioactive materials! Somehow they traced these materials via air currents and Tennessee was the place where the highest concentrations ended up, besides the 30 mile exclusion zone around the reactors, and other places where the wind blew it! How many bird dies offs were reported in that area of the US? They died from radiation poisoning! The people that run and control this death inducing industry have maintained an air of secrecy around these nuclear facilities for years, and they want them to continue to exist, and to build new ones, because they need them to make nuclear weapons and maintain their nuclear weapons stockpiles! Generating electricity is a secondary concern!

Media "All Clear" on Fukushima #2 Premature

(snip)

From the chart above, you can see the temperature has been reduced and somewhat stabilized by the large volumes of injected cooling water.

However the difference in the daily maximum temperatures at the high-point on Feb 6 and today is only 3.4 degrees (73.3 minus 69.9). Also note, while the daily high temperatures are lower, the daily low temperatures are higher and climbing. Not a good sign.

Whether TEPCO will be able to lower the Unit 2 temperature back to the less than 50 degree range it was at prior to the piping change remains to be seen. Whether they will be able to lower the water volumes also remains to be seen. At the rate the temperature is dropping it will be weeks, if they are successful.
