M6 quake hits eastern Japan; Fukushima nuclear plant stable
[link to www.japantoday.com]

(snip)

The U.S. Geological Survey said the 6.0 magnitude quake, with an epicenter 10 kilometers deep, was centered 166 kilometers east-northeast of Tokyo, where correspondents said buildings swayed.

Japan’s meteorological agency also located the quake off the coast of Ibaraki Prefecture, south of the stricken plant.

Japan, located at the junction of four tectonic plates, experiences 20% of the strongest quakes recorded on Earth each year.

Wonder how many people truly realize the gravity of the situation. As bad as it is, it could get much, much worse.

Iran increases uranium enrichment capacity
Iran says it has made major advances in its nuclear development, boosting uranium enrichment and loading the first Iranian-made fuel rods into a reactor.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad made the claims during a speech at the country's atomic energy agency on Wednesday.

Ahmadinejad said new advanced centrifuges had increased uranium enrichment capacity at a facility in Natanz, central Iran. The centrifuges speed up the enrichment process and triple production capacity.

He said 164 new centrifuges have started operating at the Natanz plant. In addition, another 3,000 conventional centrifuges have been added to the 6,000 already at the plant.

Japanese food is safe campaign in Shanghai
Japan is promoting its food at a fair in Shanghai in a bid to win back Chinese consumers spooked by the nuclear accident in March last year.

Japan exported over 450 million dollars worth of agricultural and marine products to China in 2011, but that was down 35 percent on the previous year.

Six Shanghai operators of supermarkets and convenience stores are endorsing Japanese products at the fair, which began on Thursday.

City in Shizuoka Pref. begins trial burning of debris from Iwate
[link to mdn.mainichi.jp]

[snip]

The city government will burn 10 tons of debris transported from Yamada in five containers from Wednesday to Thursday morning. The debris will be mixed with 56 tons of local household garbage and burned at two furnaces at a waste incinerator plant through Friday.

Provided that the cesium concentration in incinerated ash is up to 500 becquerels per kilogram and other standards are met, Sakurai will announce by the end of March whether to formally accept the debris from Yamada. The results of the trial are due out by March 24.

~

5 to 1 ratio of garbage to debris. If they are careful in picking the debris, it should be no problem to remain under the .gov limit, especially since a lot of the radioactivity will go up in smoke...

Once the process is ipso facto, the debris will not be selected. Any old debris will do. Pretty shrewd.

Massive levels of radioactive cesium detected at quarry near Fukushima plant
[link to mdn.mainichi.jp]

[snip]

Tests detected up to 214,200 becquerels of radioactive cesium per kilogram of gravel, far above the levels at other quarries operating in the evacuation zones around the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear plant. About 60,000-210,000 becquerels of cesium was found in most of the gravel that had been kept outdoors at the quarry since the disaster.

Noting that extraordinarily high levels of radiation were detected from only the Namie quarry, the experts said they recommended that the ministry only set standards for areas in Fukushima Prefecture where radiation levels remain high.

Japanese state mobilizes its young women to give comfort
[link to nf2045.blogspot.com]

[snip]

First, the Ministry of Agriculture has persuaded nine university campus queens to join a promotion campaign in which they will be featured eating food from Fukushima Prefecture. These women will be asked to eat and promote many types of food that have been found to be contaminated.
I take small comfort in knowing that the university I work for was not considered prestigious enough to be invited to participate.

ALSO

A citizen with a consumer grade dosimeter has found a mysterious "black powder" on the streets of Minami Souma.
No official survey noticed this fine, black powder which this citizen found throughout the streets of the town. A sample of the powder was analyzed by a professor at Kobe University and the cesium content was found to be:
Cs-134: 485,252 Bq/kg
Cs-137: 604,360 Bq/kg
TOTAL: 1,089,612 Bq/Kg

US think tank: Iran approaching nuclear threshold
A US think tank says Iran could produce enough highly enriched uranium for a nuclear device in 2 weeks if the country were to stockpile enough 20-percent enriched uranium.

The Bipartisan Policy Center says in its report for this month that if Iran is allowed to proceed with its enrichment process unchecked, the country could have 155 kilograms of the 20 percent enriched uranium by late 2012.

TEPCO reports reactor thermometer problem to govt
The operator of the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant has attributed abnormally high temperature readings at one of the facility's reactors to a malfunctioning thermometer.

Tokyo Electric Power Company, or TEPCO, reported the analysis of the problem at the Number 2 reactor to the government's nuclear safety agency on Thursday.

The utility said it's highly unlikely that temperatures could rise so high unless at least 60 percent of the melted nuclear fuel in the reactor were concentrated near the thermometer.

Nuclear evacuation drill held in Ehime Prefecture
Evacuation drills for a serious accident at a nuclear power plant were held in Ehime and Shimane prefectures, both in western Japan.

The evacuation zones around nuclear plants were expanded from 10 kilometers to 30 kilometers after the accident at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant last March.

The drill in Ehime was based on a scenario of a reactor cooling system failure at the Ikata nuclear power plant after a huge earthquake. Temblors have raised fears of radioactive substances leaking from the plant.

About 10,000 people -- the largest ever -- took part in the evacuation drill, which made use of full-size buses and helicopters. In addition, Maritime Self-Defense Force vessels were mobilized for the first time.
